I think that New Zealand will become the 9th state of Ausfailure, problem solved.

Who are Auckland City anyway?

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Keeper concedes 3 and makes team of the week? Sums it up really.

Interesting poll at the bottom of that page: "Who impressed you most in Round 2?" - Phoenix 'B' level with Roar on 27%

The point is the ASB Premiership is full of talented players, teams that play on a world stage and with games that are accessible to the majority of NZ and yet it is consistently overlooked for an Australian league, featuring one NZ team.

This is a fair comment.  Fenton a prime example and if he's good enough then I'm sure there are others around.  However, trying to make this argument about Spoonley after 1 game when he did fine, but basically wasn't tested, doesn't really make a strong case.

I like how we aren't allowed to appreciate any footballers unless we were from the start.

I knew Messi before he was good.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

As a Kiwi I love being lectured by some ex-pat about what I should enjoy watching.

alireggae - you should have been in the country long enough now to know there is just something about trans-tasman competition that appeals to the Kiwi psyche.

The ASB Prem has its place and so does the A-League (and international football too, unless that's also verboten as being too populist).

It's a free country and people will watch what they want. Or would prefer some kind of Stalinist march down to Kiwitea every home game?

Given the quality of last weekend's footie, a Stanlist march down to Kiwitea Street sounds appealing.  Possible purges to follow!!

But back to the Spoonley thing.  Having watched footie in England and Europe,  there are some excellent goalkeepers here who could easily fit with a European / EPL side.  And that's from someone who spent 10 years watching Arsenal's dour defense.

I never said that. My comments are in some way in reference to previous discussions on here which suggest that ASBP players are not good enough to make the step up(?) to A-League level - particularly Ian Hogg.
This is simply not the case, especially when you take into account the new, professional environment, increased training and support etc.

I don't know but maybe Spoonley would rather pursue a law career anyway.

Yes, and it's not just football but rugby, league and basketball too.

The thing is, how is NZ sport supposed to progress if all the attention is focused on Aus leagues?

I would think the fact that 6 players have been away from the Nix plus three others ex Nix (Smeltz, Rojas and Kosta) kind of defeats your argument and shows the Nix is progressing the sport in NZ.

Like who?  Imray, who is clearly the best in the ASBP, didn't go well in Scotland.

Progressing the Australian A-League you mean, which as a football fan in NZ, benefits the good folks of Wellington occasionally.

Way to mis the point.

The fact that you are in a tiny, tiny minority (located in one corner of Sandringham) doesn't at any point make you question your evangelical zeal for the cause?

In my eyes, NZ is progressing a lot faster than Aussie currently.
But I guess Rojas hasnt been benefited at all. Being from further north. Oh what about Boyd - no he's definitely seeing no benefit.
I guess you would rather have all the kiwi players playing in the ASBP? or just go straight overseas?

Don't you realise we'd be much better of with Smeltz and Leo benching for Mansfield Town, Kosta playing for Team Wellington, Marco for Waikato FC, Lochhead and Boxall for a US-League 2 club, Siggy and Brockie for Canterbury United, Paston retired, Moss playing in the NSWPL.

Not forgetting Fenton and Boyd and the other Academy kids playing National Youth League.

...and best of all they could be playing in front of 500 people in the ASB Premiership with absolutely no media coverage at all.

How can you not see that PWF?

The very fact that we qualified for the last World Cup has been directly attributed by a large number of people to have been as a direct result of the benefits the Nix have brought to NEW ZEALAND football. Or do the knitting circle not see the fact that we made the world cup finals as a benefit to NZ football??

Interesting.  I see Imray 2012 as vastly improved on version 2008.  He is still a shot stopper.   I strongly suspect he will be picked up again.

Just on FourFourTwo, they have been terrible, in the preseason we signed "No-one" to quote their preview article, then it was only poor play by Sydney that allowed us to win the first game..and it just goes on.

It almost is like their A-League writers completely forgot that there was a 10th team across the Tasman in Wellington. But moving on, I know now to just look at their articles and laugh. Provides some good humour.

I gave up on 442 years ago (although Aido is a good, good man) but I'm happy to sit under the radar while the Aus fans angst hard.

Look, I like Hoggy (despite the rest of his family) and think he, Lochhead and Rowe give us some real depth at Left Back but the reaction to his one good game for the All Whites was WAY over the top and he has failed to come close to repeating that since.

Throw in the assertion that he's by-passed the 'C-League' to a better level when he's playing occassionally in the MLS youth league is a HUGE stretch.

I hope he gets a deal in the US but to beat the Phoenix with a stick for not signing him is ridiculous, particularly when the main reasons were that we had no youth or reserve team and our first choice left back is the All White incumbent.

He's not better than Lochhead.

Stay clear of the official A-league highlights package as well then. Apparently Heart completely dominated the 2nd half even with 10 men.

Oh this one sounds like the best of the lot. I think we need a humourous News articles thread where we can just post stuff that makes us laugh written by Aussies about the Nix.
