Jacob Spoonley

I'm interested to know what people think about Jacob Spoonley, because I know there are some on the YF pod that don't rate him. I thought he was brilliant today, despite the one time where he ran off his line only for Garcia to beat him to the ball.

I know he's seen as our 4th choice really and is very unlikely to get another look in at the club until perhaps March. But he looks A-League quality and I'm sure could make the grade at any other club if he was an Australian.

Scott Basalaj appears to be the future and Glen Moss is at an age where he should command the starting role for the next three years. So hopefully someone can see Spoonley's efforts and he can push higher than ASB Premiership.

Spoonley was immense... reckon he's a potential shot at victory... they have woeful keeping stocks

If paston does hang up his boots at the end of this year, we shouldn't have to go far to find our number 2

Would Spoonley be happy as number 2?

I would have thought he would want as much game time as he can get.

Three for me, and two for them.

I thought he did well, but to be honest he really was not tested.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

He did a better job than Thomas did for the Tards last night :)

Apart from that one corner I thought that he played very well. He was quick of his line, had good distribution and commanded his box well. Would like to see him playing at a higher level than ASB Premiership. He didn't look out of place.

The only problem with Jacob Spoonley's future is the fact that Scott Basalaj is seen as a better talent. Glen Moss is young enough to be around for awhile so even if Mark Paston does retire at the end of the season then Basalaj would become #2. But would he want to play second fiddle? To be honest, surely Spoonely sees professional football better than playing for Auckland City?

Doesn't he have a reasonable job in law with his degree plus 'Auckland City amateur'

I don't know how up to date it is but according to linked in he is a clerk. I think most in his shoes would jump at the chance. In the long off season he can exercise his grey matter

Sorry, correction, is just a summer clerk at that. Obviously just biding his time before taking the call from rickie/green.

I'd really like to know the difference in skill level between Jacob Spoonley, Jake Gleeson, Scott Basalaj, Stefan Marinovic and Michael O'Keefe.

This. Competent for most part, but wasn't asked to do anything extraordinary. Had a terrible moment in the first half when he came out for a cross from a corner which he missed, and the ensuing header bounced off the ground and onto the top of the crossbar. Dura had it covered at any rate if it had been on target, but if it had gone in somehow this thread would have had a distinctly different tone.

I tend to agree.

None of the above are starting professionals at a decent level, Jake was but he's not anymore.

Main problem for keepers is that they tend to bench warm until their late 20s unless they are very special ala Joe Hart.

I also think Pasty will still be around for a season or two yet, lets not forget keepers can play on for ever eg Shilton and even Bolton who's no spring chicken but was still very sharp today.

But for a guy that has never played pro football before. I'm not saying he's a superstar, I'm just saying he looks to be A-League quality and I really hope he can push higher than ASB Premiership.

While at times he's looked distinctly average in the ASB Premiership too. I don't want to sound too harsh on the guy since he had a pretty solid game today and certainly deserves credit for his performance, especially given the circumstances, but a lot of people here are jumping to conclusions after watching him play for the first time.

Jake Spooner....According to FoxSports News.

So it takes a one-off game for you to realise the talent that is on your own doorstep - and he's not the only talented keeper in NZ.

It was the same with Hogg. Had to play for the All Whites before you all figured out that he is a top player.

And, hopefully, like Hogg, Spoonley will bypass the Aussie C-League for bigger and better things.

No, another ACFC knitter. Seriously, dudes, you guys put me off going to Kiwitea over the summer, and I'm not sure whether you mean to do that. If so, we're all good.

Whos kiwitea? Never heard of him

The point is the ASB Premiership is full of talented players, teams that play on a world stage and with games that are accessible to the majority of NZ and yet it is consistently overlooked for an Australian league, featuring one NZ team.

So you'd rather support a Wellington based team who play in an Australian league? How many games do you get to?

Seriously, what's the infatuation with Aussie sports over NZ?

Maybe I'm missing something and Australians are all tuned into Sky fanatically supporting the ASBP, the ITM Cup etc.

Spoonley > Paston & Moss

ASBP > A-League

Auckalnd CIty > Wellington Phoenix

O-League > ACL

Did I miss anything?

Yes - you missed the point. I'm not saying any of that. I'm asking why NZers support Aussie sport over their own? Is it that much better? Probably not.

They are so awesome.
Kewell, Emmo, the other ones.
Gorgeous football you have to admit.  I enjoy it when we play them - they have an aura about them.

On a non-sporting front they also have Kylie.
We should be so lucky.

I support my city's team - which is the wellington phoenix.

just like you would support Auckland City if they were in the A-League

Do you want us to not support the phoenix?

I would support ACFC, since I live in Auckland, but the 'Nix are the only pro team in this country, and the Nix-hating antics of ACFC supporters put me off.

 Can't be.

The next Messiah is playing in the Horowhenua Kapiti junior leagues, and is just waiting for the phone call from Ricki.

Yet another example of the Phoenix overlooking a young kiwi, who needed to go overseas to get discovered! He should have had a youth contract with us at least. Sack Ricki!

Spoonley did well, but he isn't better than Paston or Moss. We don't have room to carry 3 keepers on contracts, so until NZ gets a second team his chances of playing in the A-League will be hindered because he is a visa player.

I'm the next Messiah and so is my wife.
