If u guys can pull off the signing of John Aloisi, that would be massive!. John Aloisi is still a proven goal scorer at levels higher than the A-League, and would fit nicely with 2 speedsters either side of him and play maker behind.

I think alot of players could play well with a good playmaker in behind them and 2 speedsters on either side.

no doubts would be a great player for phoenix but dont think he'd draw the crowds a real marquee player like a dwight yorke or another high profile ex-prem player!!

He'd be more affordable though.

At the alleged $1m (Aus) he was being paid, you would need 5000 more people per game to cover the costs.  Sydney, who won the A-League in V1 with Dwight, only averaged 1600 or so more that season than V2 when most of them were too busy whining about Terry Butcher and struggling to make the play-offs.

That is in a city of 4 million, not 400k...

I still think Ricky should put an offer to John, it would at least get his attention at the prospect that an A-League club is prepared to offer him a contract. He was quoted as saying he hadn't had any offers from A-League clubs, probably too scared to approach him. So I say if we show initiative and are the first to offer him a contract, even if it's way off what he's expecting, then it shows we care about signing him. Ross would be a VERY BIG factor in the deal. If John wants to play IN Aussie rather than over here, then offer him a 1 season Marquee Player contract. Then he can go to an Aussie club if it doesnt work out. JUST OFFER HIM A SOMETHING RICKY!

i suspected as much but didn't have the figures, thanks hard news. Its a difficult one, and i dont think signing a "big name" will be a priority for ricki who i suspect will look to build a good squad looking at his first signings. I dont think a so called "marquee" is essntial if they are going to be a drain on the club rather than an assett i'd like phoenix to be around longer than the three years!!!!

Would be good if you could sign him, but I can't really see it happening.

Yeah him signing is pie in the sky stuff, from memory John has 1 year left at Alaves and Ross is only here for 1 year.

So that means we would have to pay a transfer fee and I am sure that would not be small money.

This says he can move in a couple of months:

As the only Australian to have played in the worlds three top leagues (England, Italy and Spain) John Aloisi has told au.fourfourtwo.com recently that a move back to his home country may be back on the cards.

Having endured a largely frustrating season that has been compounded with hamstring injuries; Aloisi confirmed that returning to play in the A-League has always been on his agenda but there is now potential that may see it happen sooner than expected.

While his preference is to find another club in Spain he surprisingly says that no firm offer from Australia has come his way despite the fact he will be able to move for free during the A-League pre-season.* With his experience and profile, Aloisi would certainly be a marquee player for any Australian side.

For the last couple of months Ive been injured [and they] have been a bit frustrating. Its been a bit difficult this year because weve had a lot of problems off the pitch with the club and I havent played as much as I would have liked. Its just one of those things that sometimes you have to go through as a footballer in Europe. Im happy to come to the end of my contract in June and see what comes up then, he said.

Originally, Aloisi had intimated joining his brother Ross at Adelaide United after returning from Europe but with that plan now all but impossible (following Ross departure for Wellington), he is open to hear from other local clubs.

Ill move on [from Alaves] for sure, but I dont know where to. I wont be staying here. After getting relegated last year I didnt want to be playing second division and the club made it a bit difficult for me to leave and I had a lot of problems with payments by the club so it was a bit difficult to move on. When Im a free agent Ill be moving on. Id like to stay in Spain, itd be nice but well see what comes up. Im looking at all options at the moment.

Well I dont know [when Ill play in the A-League] because I havent had any offers from anyone so its hard to say. You know, if someone comes up with a good offer for sure Id think about it because it would be nice to play in Australia again but at the moment I cant say whether it will be next year or in a few years time.

* Update: As reported at www.qldroar.com.au, Roar Coach Frank Farina has held initial talks with John Aloisi's representatives in recent days regarding a possible return to the A-League. He concluded by saying that he intends to hold further conversations in the near future.
