MEDIA RELEASE

For immediate release

MERRICK HAS FAITH IN KIWI YOUTH

Ernie Merrick continued to slash the average age of his Wellington Phoenix squad today when he confirmed that 17-year-old New Zealander Alex Rufer had been signed on a three-year professional contract.

On taking over the coaching reins Merrick inherited an experienced bunch of players and immediately set about injecting some youth while also acquiring the likes of Costa Rican international Kenny Cunningham.

“It is good management to ensure you have a blend of experienced players who can cope with the rigours of professional football,” Merrick said.

“If you also have a group of talented young players alongside them they can learn so much from those older guys.”

Merrick was enthusiastic when talking about his latest recruit and made it plain that he believes the youngster is capable of challenging for a first team spot this season.

“The Phoenix is a work in progress and it is not going to happen overnight, but I wouldn’t have given him a contract if I didn’t think he could play now,” Merrick said.

“Alex is just turned 17 but he is physically mature enough to cope with senior football as he’s proved by playing regionally and nationally with Wests and Manawatu.

“I see him as a very impressive young talent; the type of player we can mould into the Phoenix style of play.

“I already see him as a contender to play in the A-League, so it was important I bring him in now to work on his technical and tactical development, and of course he will develop physically under the programme.

“Alex’s signing adds to our stock of high quality young up and coming players.”

Asked where he saw Rufer challenging for a place in the side, Merrick said he didn’t want to pigeon hole the lad but acknowledged he was very much an attacking player who could also be creative, and therefore could play as a striker or attacking midfielder.

“He has very good all-round technical skills, good ball control, a range of passes and an ability to dribble and score goals as he showed at Petone on Thursday night,” Merrick said.

“The modern game demands versatility. Look at Ryan Giggs; there is hardly a position he hasn’t played.

“With our philosophy and style of play Alex fits the mould perfectly.”

Rufer is still coming to terms with what has happened to him over the past couple of weeks.

Invited to trial with the Phoenix, probably first and foremost as a prospective Football School of Excellence candidate, Rufer could hardly believe what he was hearing when Merrick offered him the chance to become a professional footballer a week ago.

“I am absolutely stoked,” Rufer said after helping a Phoenix side stacked with young trialists beat Petone 6-1 on Thursday night.

“I was over the moon when Ernie told me what was happening.

“Everything has happened so quickly it is hard to take it all in.

“I found it difficult to keep quiet while we were sorting the contract out. I wanted to tell everyone I was going to be a professional footballer.”

Rufer has settled quickly into the Phoenix set up though he found it completely different to what he was accustomed to.

“The pro environment is so much more competitive and challenges you to be better,” he said.

“It has been good working with Ernie. He is a good coach and I think I will learn a lot from him. I like the way he wants the team to play.”

Rufer may have had his head in the clouds for the past seven days but he is quickly coming back to earth.

“Getting a contract is great but now the hard work begins to get better and stronger,” he said.

“I’ve taken the first step and now the goal is to earn a place in the team.”

I like this and yes to be fair to Herbert he did the same. Fenton was probably a shoo in but this is similar to Boyd

If he's good enough, he's old enough. Well done Alex. And Ernie!
This could be the season the Nix begin to emerge as a genuine powerhouse of Australasian football.

But it's not like Herbert went out of his way to sign young Kiwis other than the three he HAD to have.

Quality signing. Saw him at Springs 2 weeks ago and said he should have been targeted then.

Any more info on him as a player? Similar to? Strengths? Weaknesses? What job would he do for us?

Big call.. but from what I've seen so far, Rufer looks to have more ability and potential than Boyd.

Has played in the hole where Crlos will play. Also further forward as one of the wider 'strikers'
Seems to have great vision and really good at shrugging of challenges from bigger lads
Think his technique is solid, but will improve under full time traning

Ricki always ran with a bare bones squad of 20-21 because we had no way of giving squad players who didn't play any game time.

Ernie has decided to go the full 23 and is filling up the other couple spots with youngsters.

Each one you don't sign leaves 50k spare to add onto a more expensive player and leaves spots open just in case a good deal becomes available later in the season. That said, a big difference is that Ricki was the one who signed all his players. Ernie has inherited a squad and there may well be players he doesn't really intend to use. In that case running a 20 man squad, with say 3 passengers, would be like running a 17 man squad which gets a bit tricky.

Anyway very happy to have Rufer Mk4 aboard. Tad worried about the lack of games for his development but I'm sure Ernie has taken that into account.

Hopefully he'll get off the bench a couple of times but given the stock we have for the front third...

I'm liking the number of signings we are getting and eagerly await the midfield signing but the lack of experience in defence is a little worrying. If Fenton plays RB and Caira plays LB we look a little vulnerable down the flanks and don't have any cover. Ernie doesn't see Bertos as a defender but if Fenton went down I presume we would see him there for lack of an alternative and if Caira were to be injured then... we don't have any cover for LB do we?

Thought I was posting in Transfer speculation... never mind.

Cut after 1 season. Was struggling to make the bench in the VPL last season. No clue where he is this year.

Well then we've definitely got the best Rufer in the league!

Sadly, we also have the worst...

Great new about Rufer. Some mates of mine played against him at Napier tournament when he was 15yo and said they'd never seen anyone here so good at same age. They are not inclined to rave about anyone else either. Sure Ernie will keep his feet on the ground.

Welcome to the Nix young Rufer.

Exciting times for NZ football at youth level. Lots of these kids won't go all the way but if we can at least get 2 or 3 that become good A-League players then all the better.

Also a pat on the back for Gareth in particular.....the Youth development thing is his baby. He's the one putting his own money into it to help get it up and running. I just hope Rufer can get enough game time to continue his development.

The FSE is great, though you can't credit Gareth and the FSE for Alex's signing/development. And since Alex isn't with the FSE he wont be involved with TW or Miramar for game time and must push for a match day spot or rely on the odd friendly.
It would be interesting to see where the club is at regarding the FSE since quite a few have been let go and no announcements regarding new players being signed to the FSE.

Can't players from the FSE play in the senior team anyway? If so, wouldn't it have been a better option to sign Rufer to the FSE and let him get some game time in the ASP premiership while still giving him the opportunity to play full A-league matches as well?

IIRC there are issues with this premise, I think one of these reasons: can only transfer to HAL team during international transfer windows from FSE, can only transfer a few times in a calendar year, stand down of 30 days when moving from pro to amateur leagues, might even be issues with international transfers for players under 18. Basically because the 'Nix are a pro team with the players registered in Australia the FSE players registered with 'amateur' TW and/or central league club and registered in NZ there are complications with players moving freely between the two.

Most def and I really hope they sign another one or two to a pro deal before the season starts. Ridenton and Browne mustn't be in the reckoning which is a shame.

Haven't seen much of Ridenton. Browne for sure but we are a bit loaded in the front end of the pitch now where he plays.

Kismet, that's the word.

Which is the word Nelson used to Capt. Hardy, and sadly got a snog as a result.

The stars aligned etc. for this- young Master Rufer arrived at this point in his career at this exact moment (i.e. when Ernie went shopping) and this signing is a result.

Brilliant news at any level.

I predict we are in for one hell of a season (there, I started again...)

Is Hardy in the Toronto squad?

(Poor Horatio. Just imagine - that was his last impression of his "first mate")
