Can you imagine how awesome signing your first pro football contract must be.  Not least your first job, but actually getting a proper salary to play football.  Not expenses, not cash in an envelope, not money for coaching, an actual salary for training and playing football.  Good on him

Really can't credit the FSE for this - let's be honest, it's basic premise which was taking 18-20 year old players from the ASBP and giving them a bridge to the A-League has completely failed.  It's being restructured properly as an academy for younger players which is what it always should have been

Yes very true and perhaps only making the bench if someones injured or we go with no defender on the bench. Still just 4 subs?
Moss
Fenton Siggy Dura Caira
Muscat ?
Cunningham Hernandez Ifill
Brockie

Would be incredibly hard to play Brockie ahead of Stein at this rate given Stein's recent performances with the club. Also as we've seen from most A-league teams, given the lack of sub spots on the bench, it's kinda pointless having a reserve centre back on the bench.
I fear Boyd will really struggle to get any game time whatsoever this season, unfortunately for him

Actually if you look off-topic you'll find that middle-aged men dream about Amanda Bynes and Kiera Knightly.

You can not be serious?

Recent performances? Brookie one of the top scorers in the A-League last season, Stein the scorer of goals against amateur teams in a preseason kickarounds.

Good point.
But what more can Stein do? 10 goals in 4 games at any level is brilliant. All I will say is that it will give Ernie a serious selection headache.

With current squad I'd have Italiano, Lia, Boyd & Huysegems on the bench.

I would start Waffles, he will know the system. It is up to Brockie to force his way back into the team.

I think we all forgot about Bertos. Should really allow more players to be on the bench

Welcome to the Nix young Rufer.

Exciting times for NZ football at youth level. Lots of these kids won't go all the way but if we can at least get 2 or 3 that become good A-League players then all the better.

Also a pat on the back for Gareth in particular.....the Youth development thing is his baby. He's the one putting his own money into it to help get it up and running. I just hope Rufer can get enough game time to continue his development.

Really looking forward now to watching the FIFA u-17 World Cup in October (hopefully on Sky) to see how Rufer goes. Means, with that side busy from September in preparation for the World Cup October 17 in UAE, he's going to miss much of the Phoenix pre-season

While results at UAE 2013 are one thing, recent evidence is that the U-17 team as a development vehicle is paying significant dividends. During New Zealand’s final 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ qualifiers in March, 14 squad member had previously featured at either an U-17 or U-20 FIFA World Cup since 2007, compared to only three in Ricki Herbert’s squad at the same stage last time.

"I think sometimes we underestimate the quality of players we are developing in New Zealand,” says Bazeley. “Players who have come from overseas are surprised with the standard and it's higher than what they were expecting.”

(On 26 August, the qualified countries will find out which sides stand between them and glory at the Official Draw)

ha, my best memory of Shane Rufer is him arguing loudly with the disgruntled opposition coach at the end of a Kingz game as they walked off Mt Smart. The funny part about it is that Shane was giving him an earful in German!

I can't remember who the opposition or their coach were.

I just watched the game again... and although he only had 10 minutes I though he was superb on the ball.

He played some great balls in and actually made us look threatening again. Also, he won a few free kicks with some very quick feet.

Looks to have grown since last year and be a lot quicker with his decisions. Very promising signs and he certainly outshone Ridenton in the game. Very keen to see him get some more minutes.

He did display some nice touches didn't he? one ball into the box was superb. i did notice that both he an Ridenton were a little slow on the ball a couple of times and immediately put it down to not being used to the pace of the game in the a League. IIRC Riera had the same problem in his first 1 or 2 games when he joined us. I've never experienced it but have the other way when dropping down a league or two and noticing how much extra time you have to think/react etc.

For some time i thought he was living on the family name but this season, he has stepped up a level and now I can't remember whom is dad and Uncle are. I will remember this young man for the player he is and the potential he certainly has.
