From Radio Sport Concerns over Brazilians at the Phoenix7/24/2007 8:36 AM

The South American theatrics by the Brazilians playing for the Phoenix are not likely to win over the fans

Despite their undoubted ability, football fans may not be won over by the Brazilian quartet at the Wellington Phoenix.

That is the warning from commentator Gordon Irving following the club's first home hit-out against the inaugural A-League champions, Sydney FC, which they won three-nil.

Two of the Brazilians started against Sydney and Irving says there were some concerns. He says the jury is still out as he did not like the theatrics that is often seen with South American players. Irving says it will not go down well with the fans if players are rolling around on the ground and it certainly will not be accepted at away matches. He says coach Ricki Herbert will be aware of it and will try to get rid of it as it will not help them when the A-League season gets underway late next month.

While the win over Sydney is encouraging, Irving says past experience has shown pre-season form does not necessarily translate into A-League success. He says Adelaide United did not win a match in the Pre-Season Cup competition but went on to secure a place in the A-League grand final.

Was this guy even at the game!

We loved it when the players feigned the injuries! Does anyone besides me remember the roar that went up? ? ?  It makes for a great larf. What planet is Irving on, boring old git. These self righteous media types are full of crap. Get over yourselves. Everybody at the ground had a bloody marvelous time, why not report on that?

Grrrrrr . . .. .. . . .  I'm not getting any less angry with these people. . . .  .

He is the top Australian commentator.
Maybe I am just overly sensitive to criticism, but the point is that we have just had a really good result against a top A League side and firstly the TV IGNORE it and the first chance the Radio have to look at the game, they go and seek an Aussie to F*cking BAG it.

He'll just say that he was quoting Gordon Irving.

Has Mr Irving asked the fans.  He has not asked me because they have won me over.  What a plunker!!!

I loved the Brazilians, thought they were great.

Phil,  I reckon you should write,  let him have it.

It's actually kind of hard to respond becasue Irvings actual quotes are so short that it is hard to pin down an exact opinion.

The artcile itself is not authored, and pretends to simply be a quotation from Iriving, when in fact, it is not.

The real culprit here is the person who wrote the article for the NZ press ( i note it has been used by Newstalk ZB also). The article is carefully nuanced with words like "not likely" and "may not be won over", so to rebbutt those kind of statements, all the writer has to say to respnd in "I only said it might".

So while formulating a counter argument is difficult, it is obvious that the spirit of the article is negative, and whoever wrote it seems to be looking for any reason to criticise. I suppose my main problem is that the write seems to think he/she can speak on behalf of the fans, i.e. "Irving says it will not go down well with the fans if players are rolling around on the ".

Well I beg to differ. It will go down well with the fans, because we love the nix!

Oh phenix we do,
Oh phoenix we do
Oh pheonix we do,
Oh phioenix we love you!

What's even more interesting is how Adelaide never won a match in the pre-season cup last year but won the pre-season cup competition.

Pretty hard to do that i would have thought.

But they never made the Season 1 Grand Final.  Either way it's complete rubbish.  Typical of the ill-researched clap trap that the NZ Sports media all to often get away with.

Gordon Irving is an NZ commentator and my bet is he made 15 minutes of comments and they focussed on one negative item in that.

Simon Hill. He's a sh*tny fan, but last season he had a hard on for the Victory as big as the Harbour Bridge so we love him!

PS Is it Telfer on Radio Sport at the moment. He is THE most anti-football media hack of them all.

Not Telfer at the moment. Think its Darcy Waldergrave (sp?). They're going on and on about the Tour De France.

No, he's away doing the netball.  Kent Johns is on, but the interview with irving doesn't appear to be  from his show.

Darcy is on at twelve.

Kent's a decent football man.

I've emailed RadioSport (lines were busy).

Here's the conversation so far: (in reverse order, copied from the emails)

Thanks for endeavouring to find out for me.

There are some inaccuracies in it, and it is getting a hammering on the yellow fever website see here: http://www.yellowfever.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1131

I may draft a response to the author and those who printed it .

Yeah, cheers Daikiwi, but the article itself does not have a listed author.   .  .  That's why I'm tryign to find out, because it wasn't written by Irving, and deosn't have the NZPA reference either. . .

They don't bylline their newspages. They are basically the scripts from their news. It is legit journalism, but it is just SOOOOO negative. And that is the point.

I remember him saying his son woke him up when N.Z. scored their first goal against Wales. I think this son is about 13.
I emailed radio sport to see if they would post the interview with Irving in the audio bank. Just got a reply. They will do it.

I hard the interview with Irving, it was on Andrew Dewhursts show on Sunday night. I think the intervew itself was pretty good, Irving seems quite enthusiastc about the Phoenix. . .  I take issue with who-ever summarised that interview becasue it wasn't a negative interview as the article suggests

What is the membership of Yellow Fever - ie do you count all those who visit the forums or just those who have signed up. The reason being, is that this website has quickly become a fan's voice piece, and that can be really powerful.
My club Swansea have a really good unofficial website, which gained huge kudos in the late 1990s when it was at the forefront of saving the club after it was taken over by a really bad owner who brought the club to within a whisker of liquidation. It has remained active as an independent voice of the fans, and I know all the media in the town still frequently visit it to gauge the feeling of the fans.
You can visit it at http://scfc.co.uk/
This site reminds me a lot of it, with the passion and everything so good on yer guys.

I know various media types and club reps do visit at times and try and guage the mood of the fans.  Problem is that they have to care about what the fans think.  So when you have an article like this which is clearly designed to put a negative spin on Sunday's performance then the mood of the fans isn't really taken into account.  All I think that we can do is ring Radio Sport and let them know that we don't agree.

This was on this morning's news at 7 am which is pretty disappointing, especially considering as on Monday's news they didn't even mention the result (which has I think already been canvassed).

We are going to have to fight for fair representation in the media, that much is true.  Everyone here needs to take Phil's lead and be active in emailing various media when we receive unfair representation, or none at all.  I think we'll try and put together a list of contacts emails for complaints and post it here so we can start to try and get some positive change!  Good start Phil.

Black Plague may be able to correct me on this but my understanding is that in Brazil diving, feigning injury etc is all considered to be part of the skill of the game. Being able to gain any kind of advantage is seen as admirable and they don't really see it as "cheating" in the same way that your average uptight, po-faced, W.A.S.P does.

I think we all need to help normalise this behaviour in our culture so that it becomes more generally accepted and our Brazilians are free to express themselves fully on the football pitch without criticism.

From now on I will be over-acting and generally trying to get other people in trouble in all aspects of my life.

Perhaps a new innovation in the stands could be a variation on the Mexican wave called the Brazilian dive. In support of our boys the entire crowd occasionally throws themselves on the ground, writhes around a bit holding their ankle and then jumps up quickly.
