No thread for him yet.

Am planning on going and seeing him play when they take on Perth then heading to Gold Coast vs Nix also in December.

He's got the number 7 shirt there.

Before you tell me it is Costa. Apparently according to the comments below his name is in fact Kosta Barbarouses.

I have a feeling that with Brown out for the WC, he could be replaced by costa especially with Herbert wanting to play with 3 strikers and only Wood and Brockie as backups.

Brisbane Roars unbeaten pre-season streak has continued with a 3-1 training match win over runaway Queensland State League leaders Sunshine Coast Fire in Gympie.

The match was played in wet and at times torrential conditions, but a healthy crowd was still on hand to cheer on both sides.

A handy display from the frontline partnership of Kosta Barbarouses and Henrique paved the way for the win with the New Zealander bagging two goals and the Brazilian the other.

Brisbane took the lead late in the first 40 minute half when Barbarouses slotted his first of the game.

The New Zealand international found himself free on the edge of the box with the ball at his feet after an Henrique effort was well blocked by Fire goalkeeper Antony Hall.

Barbarouses grabbed the opportunity from dead in front and lashed home the rebound.

On the stroke of half-time it was the Brazilians turn to get his name on the scoresheet courtesy of a cross from Barbarouses.

After being played down the right by Thomas Broich, Barbarouses put the ball into the heart of the box where Henrique expertly turned his defender and put the ball past Hall.

Barbarouses then scored Brisbanes third goal and his double midway through the second period.

Making a scorching run from wide on the left, Barbarouses cut back inside and unleashed an unstoppable shot with his right foot.

The Fire began to move the ball well and exert some of their own pressure, with much of their best play going through Yuta Gonai.

While Brisbanes unbeaten run remains intact, the streak of five consecutive clean sheets came to an end courtesy of a well-taken goal by Corey Towle.

With 20 minutes left in the contest, Towle pounced defensive header which failed to clear the area and curled a shot into the top corner.

The goal was just reward for the Fire who pushed Brisbane hard for the entirety of the contest.

Brisbanes next pre-season training match will be against a Brisbane Invitational XI at Underwood Park, Rochedale on July 6.

Gates open at 4.30pm with the Rapid Fire Fields, player signings begin at 4.45pm and kick-off is scheduled at 7.05pm.

This goal was special indeed because it was the 1st goal conceded by everton against an A league team:

Striker Magaye Gueye scored an 83rd minute winner for Everton after Kosta Barbarouses became the first A-League player to breach their defence.

That being said, I think we can expect big things from Kosta Barbarouses. The youngster was a more than handy fringe player at Wellington who just couldn't break into the side as a regular with players like Paul Ifill and Chris Greenacre up front for Ricki Herbert's team. But he showed his class with a stunning strike to score against Everton recently, the only goal the Toffees conceded in Australia during the pre-season tour, and could be fired up to make the most of his second chance

Yeah I see a big season coming up for Kosta. He's one of only a few exciting New Zealand attackers. Hope he breaks in to the All Whites too.

They've got a Costa Rican international striker waiting for international clearance as well.  His display won't have hurt and Ange likes 'em young.

It's whether he's figured out Reinaldo is sh*t that may make the final call.

3 foreign forwards..... surely they must of been thinking Kosta was going to play big part to fill foreign spot.

but maybe more later in season

i think he is better then Reinaldo
but different type of striker. and i supose depends on the costa(not Kosta) Rican striker and what style he plays to who roar will go with up front imo

I think Kosta could be well served by playing a wingers role, much like Tommy Oar to create havoc down the flanks etc but its good to be seeing the lad given a chance - even playing in and around the 1st team (youth League etc) will be better than sitting on the bench (or not even making the bench) at the Nix!

Heres something for train spotters. Barbarousses is actually ancient French for red beard. There is a Barbarousses castle in Gruissan on the Med coast near Narbonne. Aparently the ancient Barbarousses was a ruthless pirate who plundered along the Mediterranenean coast in the middle ages. Wonder if its Kosta's relative?

Not thinking of Barbarossa are you?  Which is red beard in I-talian.

If not then I never knew that.  Interesting random fact.

This.

"He became known as Barbarossa (Redbeard in italian) in Europe, a name he inherited from his older brother Baba Oru (Father Aruj) after Oru was killed in a battle with the Spanish in Algeria. This name sounded like "Barbarossa" (Redbeard) to the Europeans, and Oru did have a red beard. The nickname stuck then also to Hayreddin's Turkish name, in the form Barbaros."

That being said, Barbarousses does appear to be the French version of the name, however the origin is the Italian transliteration of the Turkish name.

To be fair - Kosta only played one good game when the team was named (his first for Brisbane) since then he played horribly but obviously did well against Heart.

Still doesn't explain selecting Mulligan but eh.

With Lochhead out will he bring in Kosta despite the obviously different positions?  This squad needs Kosta, he's exciting to watch (on form).  Come on, Ricki! loyalgunner2010-09-27 09:17:51

he's definitely had some poor games, but has played well more than twice! When his confidence is up he's great, but he does seem to get himself into a rut where one mistake brings the next and his decision-making and touch goes to pot at times.
but he is dynamic and he is a match-winner, which we dont have enough of in NZ. plus, he has a great attitude, always wanting the ball, never hiding from it or shirking responsibility. I am disappointed he wasnt included in the squad - and I have not been a Kosta cheerleader in the past.

Think this is a bit harsh - he played very well for them in the first three games of the season. And even if it's only one good game, it's still one more good game than the likes of Clapham, Mulligan and Peverley have had.

I'd be very disappointed if I were him.
