apparently Balotelli had been a little smart arse to Totti the year before, and in the current season (2010) had been disrespecting team mates, couches and his manager. Totti said that if he acted the same way at the same age his team mates would've kicked the shark outta him so decided to teach Mario a lesson. Although the 87th minute of the coppa italia final may not have been the best idea.
He also apparently said rome is a dirty city etc to totti during the game.
Obviously some here are much wiser in the ways of international football than I am, but if Welnix had said "we've got you under contract for another year and you're not going anywhere", surely they couldn't force him to actually play or put any effort into it? At worse they could have forced him not to play for anyone else for a year, but still have to pay his wages, which wouldn't have made anyone happier.
Can someone cite me a situation where a player wanted out of a contract early, club said no, and it turned out better for the club?

That's right. I was peeved when Smeltz and Rojas left, but ultimately it was their choice, their contracts were up and they were free to decide what they wanted to do.
Kosta was under contract, yet managed to engineer a move to a rival.
It's definitely the next level.

This article is missing so much of the story. You can't publish articles like this and call yourself 'sports freak' when you are have done so little digging on it. The best case I can guess is you are doing your research from insta-snap-twit-face.
The story is that he wanted out of the Phoenix cause he was unhappy with the way the club was being run and was rumoured to be negotiating with the Victory a good couple of months before he was released, using the poor excuse of 'personal reasons' as the way out to mask his public thoughts. Do some more research before publishing this load of bollocks.

In Italy the place you come from is often more important than the color of your skin, what job you hold or what language you speak. There are strong rivalries between geographical regions and even between rival towns within the same region.
This is also exemplified by the very strong divide between the North and the South of the country. In the North there is widespread belief that Southerners are lazy, dirty and generally speaking inferior to their Northern counterparts.
