I have to say I am a lot happier with him at the back. We looked a lot more composed and his timing is amazing. He did look a bit rusty at times but I can see him being a superb acquisition for the club. He organised and talked well and that rubbed off on Mossy with greater communications and he controlled his box a lot better.
Is 3 at the back what we need. Its works in my eyes but will Lockhead come straight in for Old. My view is yes. The for next week as follows
            Moss
  Dodd Rees Lockhead
Elrich Brown Johnson Daniel
            Aloisi
       Smetlz Filipe
Bench: Paston, Lia, Christie, O'dear (am I missing anyone?)

Now stick that in you pipe and smoke it

It's not like me agreeing with an Evertonian, but we are on the same side now I suppose.

Agree with your comments about Rees, looked composed, strong and read the play well.

Looking at your team for next week though, dont think Lockhead will work in a back 3.

But he might surprise us, if RH plays hime there, Lockhead has done everything asked of him this season very well.

I agree with both posts. If you are going to play a back 3, you have to keep your 3 players back i.e. not play as wing backs. Lockhead is more of a wing back and possibly may need to rein in his style for that formation.

Playing at home Ricki says he like 2 strikers. You've got 5 midfielders than can/should start thus leaving a back 3. I had my reservations when I saw the team line up on Sat but they played very well with it.

I guess I really just want to add my 5c in.  I really liked Kristian Rees.  Looked solid and seemed to have great presence.  He actually looked quite a big unit.  Very impressed.
A keeper definately.

Think Dodd and Rees could form quite a good partnership over the next year or so.

I think we've played our best football this year with 5 in the midfield. I think we played great v the CCM and Newcastle at home (and Sydney)  if I remember correctly - just unlucky both times. When we've played 5 in the midfield the passing has at times been awe inspiring imo. Felipe, Daniel and Ferrante work really well off each other.

A keeper definately.

Kristian was solid for Adelaide and was unlucky not to get another contract.  I think that Adelaide made a mistake in letting him go and I'm sure that he'll take another step up playing for the Phoenix.  Good luck to him and I'm sure he'll make a valuable addition to the Welly defense.

In this and other posts we are all agreed "He's a good un!"

and yes cosimo - "He's a big un, too!"

Toffeeman - your line-up looks worth a crack (I'd want to see a few more attacking options on the bench though, and it looked to me like Rees was operating on the right of the back 3 on saturday)

Does anyone think we have turned the corner defensively?

Perth - clean sheet

QLD - although we shipped three I though the first 70 were probably the best defensive display of the season and QLD were running out of ideas when they got the pen

Sydney - should have had a clean sheet (although I acknowledge it would have been fortuitous)

There just seems to be a bit more mongrel defensively, just my thoughts.  Coupled with Melbourne's woeful scoring record (12 in 13 games) maybe they are ripe for the picking this weekend?

Agreed dean. Though I guess we couldn't of possibly gotten any worse..

It's going to be interesting to see how the players react to the (comparatively) big crowd at the TD. Most teams seem to step up because of it - usually hinders Melbourne more than anything.

I've thought that Melbourne have looked really sluggish recently, there just isn't the intensity to their play that they had last year.

We seem to have our defence sorted finally. Rees is great signing. If we keep playing like this we can start stringing together a few wins at last. We're only six points off 3rd place, we're not 100 miles behind

Agree whole heartedly - didn't get to see much of the QLD game - but I thought yesterday's effort was much better defensively - which I think started in the mid field - more presence and seemed to stop so much ball coming through.  I think 5 in the midfeild does seem to be a better formation for us... It suits out attacking style of play - but also with that number of players across the park means we can defend much further up the pitch instead of in the last 3rd...Sydney put a lot of pressure on towards the end of the 2nd half and the composure wasn't all that bad.  We got caught a few times down the flank - but a lot less than in previous weeks.  Rees looked nice and solid - a good acquisition!

I think our type of game has changed.  For the first six games carefree attack.  But it has now been seven games since we've scored more than one goal.  Defence has improved plus a little less adventurous.

The most pleasing part of the last two games is we've shown guts.  10 men gave their all in Brisbane, and a total effort with half the side away on Sunday.  Give us a full team, YF in full cry and look out.
