It's not a "Like-a-thon" at all. And that's not what I'm suggesting.

Not everyone knows about this website - despite the Hutt News #YFspendup

And more importantly, not everyone is "we". Many people who do support, or at least are open to more discussion and may even make submissions aren't part of YF and won't come here, unless they happen across the ad. Others also don't associate the stadium with YF, rightly. A lot of people would likely be interested in a "debate" but probably don't think they'll get one here... just as seems the case with the DWOR page. 99.3% won't put any effort in, if it's not in front of them, they won't be bothered.

As I saw last night - barely 50 people at the council meeting/presentation around infrastructure and spending that will directly affect tens of thousands of people. Understandably (epic snorefest).

There is no silver (or yellow) bullet.

Fair play.

I'll like it if someone does it...

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Submitted as an international keen on bringing my $$ to the petone/ hutt area

+ saying that culturally it would be great, increasing diversity, travelling fans etc...

Awesome, just got my Receipt of submission from the HCC. Glad it hasn't just gone off in to the ether!

Made my submission.

Touched on some of the same points as others.

I did make a point of saying that although it will obviously have an impact on Petone residents I don't think that it's unreasonable for Hutt City to make this contribution to sport and recreation in the region. Residents of other parts of the Greater Wellington region have already made similar sacrifices for the greater good and will continue to do so in the future. The residents of Petone who are against this proposal benefit from all sorts of other regional assets and it can't always be one-way traffic, sometimes you have to think beyond the boundaries of your own back-yard.

I wrote this,

It's entirely the truth, I really like Jackson Street, I just wanted to point out all the places that I'm likely to spend money at if I had an excuse to go there regularly, hopefully adding my own experiences makes it more real to them than simply: have money, will spend.

------------------

Hi,

I don't know if I'm eligible to state my opinion on the Petone Arena, namely because I'm a resident of Wellington city and not Lower Hutt, however an outsiders opinion may be of some interest.

Firstly, I'm in favour of the arena, I think its something the region needs it is actually really surprising that a city of the size of Lower Hutt is missing such a basic facility.

I like Petone, Jackson Street especially is a bit of a gem, whenever we are in Petone we make sure we stop for a pub meal or a light crepe, grab some dutch licorice and cheese, shop at Pack N Save; we have even been known to buy (horrendously expensive) funky furniture on a whim.

Jackson Street is great.

However, being Wellingtonians we don't have much cause to go to Petone, usually its every couple of months because of some misguided attempt of DIY that only Mitre 10 Mega can help with.

I did a bit of a canvas of the people in my office that follow the Phoenix, these people are young professionals (structural engineers) who have plenty of disposable income. A few of them have never ever been to Lower Hutt, the city having the incorrect reputation of being boring and even being dangerous.

I think that you will find that having a draw card within the city will not only bring plenty of disposable income to the area, but will go towards showcasing the hidden gem that is Petone, and by flow on  dispose of the various myths surrounding Lower Hutt in general.

I for one will enjoy an excuse for regular trips.

Just made my submission online supporting the stadium.  One benefit I thought was important was the integration of the stadium with the Wellington Institute of Technology Campus as this will enhance their sport and recreational programmes.

Anyone got any amusing ideas for next week's ad in the Hutt News?

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Permalink Permalink

Sorry I haven't seen the previous ads but have you considered a tasteful (if possible) discrediting of some of the blatantly wrong assumptions being made by the opposition to this? I guess it could be a negative way to go about it but just an idea to iron out some of the untruths being flouted around the place.

Or maybe some facts around numbers of people visiting the rec now vs influx of punters should the stadium get built i.e. the facts in terminator x's earlier post?

Also it's been mentioned that bar/restaurant owners on Jackson St are in support of this, which seems an obvious assumption, but do they have a voice? How can they be included to help stump up support for this?

I was in a second-hand shop in Petone the other day and there was a petition on the table there against the stadium - you would think that it would be rare that any business owner in Petone would be in opposition, so what are the others doing? Letting this one guy make it seem that Petone business owners don't want this?

I'm happy to talk to a few of the bar owners if you like - perhaps even get a quote or three... (or at least a pint or three).

I like the idea of accentuating some of the positive things (referred in the draft plan) rather than wasting valuable bar-tab dollars refuting nimby's myself... and making the focus regional, and beyond just the Nix (and Gareth - who polarises many, rightly or wrongly).

In the interests of simplicity (for all concerned, especially those reading) how about just changing the "say no to nimby's" to "say yes to progress" and leave the rest exactly the same... Keep the "grumpy buggers" and everything else as is.

I very much like the idea of encouraging people to think regionally and RR's point about how past residents have made sacrifices for us to benefit from.

I'd edit the ad to say something like...

"SAY YES TO PETONE ARENA

The proposed Petone Arena is a great opportunity for Petone residents to make a significant contribution to the future of the local community and the Greater Wellington Region.

Let's show some of the foresight of past residents of our region who gave us such great assets as Wellington Airport, Westpac Stadium, Te Papa and The Basin Reserve. Please make a submission to the Council in support of keeping the discussion about Petone Arena going.

(Then keep the existing info about how to make a submission)."

If "foresight" sounds a bit proper maybe that could say "ambition" or similar.

I put my submission through this morning, pretty much started along the lines of "i never visit Petone, theres nothing of any real relevance there. Unless im playing sport against a petone club on saturdays, il visit once a year. If i dont play against Petone, it might mean i wont visit at all." but then i went on to explain how a local mate of mine moved to petone for business (tattooist), and with that all his existing clientèle followed him over, including myself. I then went on to say we often catch up at local eateries when i visit him 3-4 times a month - so all of a sudden ive gone from not visiting, to being a regular visiter, and through being their discovering more about petone and visiting more establishments along jackson street. Then i ended it with - the same will happen with the Arena, having something that people will come to see because there isnt one anywhere else, and they'll spend a lot more time and money in petone as a result of it.

I think your key message here needs to be: have the discussion & we want to work with you.

If you try selling the stadium in the current state of ever changing landscape, you won't get anywhere. If you go into it Polarising people (i.e. Nimby strap line) you're making it us vs them.

Your ad should be something like:

Dear Petone,

We're the Yellow Fever, and like most kiwi men we like to keep things casual.

With that in mind how's about we have a conversation about this stadium?

Just a conversation, no commitment to a new building.

Let's discover how we can shape the future of sport together.

OK, so that's really fucking hard. This is basically the same word count as the original ad:

SAY YES TO PETONE ARENA

Petone Arena is our chance to make a big contribution to the future of our community and the Greater Wellington Region.

Make a submission to the Council and keep the discussion going.

(with the same info about making a submission)

For same added humour the title could read...

Just a thought, nobody has mentioned the Hutt Valley Lakers. Possibly for good reason, but even still.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hutt_Valley_Lakers

How about something like this:

We had professional sport once. We can have it again.

Support the new Petone Arena and show that Lower Hutt is a progressive place to live.

Not just a suburb north of Wellington.

Just a thought.

Nice sensible comment junior, when you follow your local team you support them through the good & the bad, cos that's what you do.

The Nix need a "football stadium" and they ain't gonna build one in the city, so lets move 10mins down the road to a site that has 2 railway stations, numerous bus routes and above all heaps of pubs & clubs - - or how about following a glory Premiershit team on the otherside of the world in a purpose made ground that we'll never ever go to, just because the buy their way to wins !!!!

Sent my submission. Basically said:

  • economic benefits for local businesses
  • free marketing for Petone to the Australian tourist market
  • stadium can be designed in such a way as to be minimally environmentally invasive
  • rugby clubs might just have to suck it up, other sports teams lose parts of their parks for various reasons anyway (although not in so many words)
  • property prices may well benefit from this (with references to a couple of US studies)
  • Hutt City ratepayers effectively getting an asset subsidised by Welnix.

People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people.

I cannot believe than none of the business are being very vocal about this. A shit load on money is coming their way with construction costs, materials, food, drinks and other associated stuff with the building and then when it is done the on going income from maintenance as well as office supplies, printer stuff, not to think of fans spending money on match days etc etc.

WTF it is going to cost the local community naf all and watch the dolleros come in to improve. The nimby group might even be able to pay rent-a-mob for their placards. The local economy will increase somewhat yet none can see it because they might lose two rugby fields and an earthquake risk crappy old stand. Small minds in a small world. Build the thing in my back yard and I'll be happy except for the rugby fans pissing in my garden as they used to do on their way to and from Athletic Park.
