Last year:
Caceres, Kosta, Dadi, McKain and Manny in front of the defence. Ifill in form

This year:

Mac, Toto, Ward, North...Manny at left back. Ifill down on confidence.

Elliott of late...but no one to pass to- hasn't been tried with Ward? Bet he'd have loved to have had Simon McBreen and Weemac to aim at tonight

anything I missed? Should I say Diego got on from time to time? Does he even still train??

recruitment and off season was poor. missing pace and finishing. Don't hassle Brown. He's scored our last 2 and got carded trying to kick the ball outa the keepers hands for a third! though did pick up an unnecessary kick the ball away card last week.

Yes. Last year (and at the world cup) Brain Turner was coach, this year we've only got Ricki.

Missed Reddy in goal and do wonder what impact Turner had on team and whether we missing this?

Ok here is my take on why the difference between this year and last year.

I tend to think that during the run in to the playoffs last year, our form was overstated.  In particular defensively a lot of the time Reddy saved our ass. From memory, (if i could be bothered I'd go back and look), I'm pretty sure Reddy got MOM or was very close to it for quite a number of games.  To me, that says defensively I don't think we were as good as we all thought.  Ifill and Reddy pretty much carried us through to the GF playoff.

Now I'm not saying that Pasty is playing badly, which I don't think he is, but I think generally speaking, our expectations this year are based on our results last year, rather than our form last year.  Overall, I just think quite a number of players aren't up to the same standard as other teams.

This combined with a couple of key players not performing as they did last year (i.e. Ifill), and having lochhead out (thus having manny play LB) is showing why our results aren't as good as last year.

Although I think the impact of the World Cup has been overstated, I think that the positive effects of us qualifying this time last year would have been significant.

This time last year the entire country was on a football buzz, we had just witnessed the highest ever crowd for an all whites game, and imo this would have affected the confidence of the phoenix a lot.

This year, it appears to me that the confidence of the entire team is significantly worse, and regardless of whether or not this has anything to do with the world cup, i think it is one of the biggest differences between '09 and '10.

I wonder if the absense of Tony Pignata might be a bigger factor than we realise - brought sense of calm and confidence throughout the organisation.

I love the fact he doesnt work for us any more, and he still comes on here and says a few calming words.

Re-hire Pignata!

Let him work from our soon to be opened Melbourne office.

We sold out a Phoenix play off game in March 2010.  The football buzz was continuing, it didn't stop after we qualified for the WC.  We have to stop using the WC as an excuse for poor performance.

The title of this thread is a bit wrong, should be last season and this season.  Considering last season ended earlier this year.

I haven't been to a single game this season. Every time I go to RoF we win.

Sack me.

Fair enough, I agree that the WC excuse has been overused, especially regarding the so-called world cup hangover, which imo is a load of bollocks.

But I still feel like our qualification last year played a major part in the momentum swing that occurred around this time last November.

And as for selling out in March, I think that's a separate issue. I'm still reasonably confident that were we to qualify for another home playoff, we would get another sellout. Of course, this would rely on us improving our game significantly, which would draw a crowd in and of itself, so this last bit is a little hypothetical I guess.
