Lucas Pantelis's bad luck continues.

The Wellington Phoenix winger didn't play a game last season after suffering a knee injury during preseason and he is now unlikely to be fit for the start of the next A-League campaign.

Pantelis has picked up an infection in the same knee and is expected to have surgery in August.

If for his entire contract he doesn't play one single league match for us, I will be PISSED.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

I know this tough but why would we keep him. presumably once hes had the op in august they will assess his chances of playing any time soon.

So at that point do they tear up the contract by mutual agreement if the news is not good ??????

it would better to have someone who can be fit and able to play all season than to have someone who may or may not be able to play half a dozen games at best.

Sorry hard facts but !!!!!!!!

He won't want to leave, after all he is getting paid to 'recover'

As he is entitled to.

Given we pay ACC and insurance via the FFA, I would think at least one of them would cover his wages. No need to start getting angsty about him.

Trouble is at what point do you say enough is enough.

You have a guy who has already missed a season, now needs more surgery and will then need rehab etc and probably at the best won't be available until very late in the year. Plus he is 30+ and has a history of injuries, maybe if he was a youngster you could cut him some slack. When he signed the Reds fans said, on his day he was a good player but always seemed to be injured. Tough for him but we need fit players.

You can hardly tear up his contract for being injured.

And as has been mentioned, his wages (or most of them) will be covered, and he doesn't take up a spot in the squad as we can injury cover him.

Allegedly

Why are they waiting until August for the surgery. Why not now?

Grumpy old bastard alert

The point at which his contract expires would be my guess.

Perhaps they need to wait until the antibiotics or watever kick in before they can do surgery.

This. If he has an infection in his knee and he needs an op this should/would be happening asap not several months later, perhaps they are hoping he can avoid an op and rely on antibiotics alone?

Either way as frustrating as it is for us, it must be 10x as frustrating for Lucus himself

I'd forgotten we were doing this kind of thing these days!

Just wondering if we end up signing someone as injury cover, can that player be a foreigner and not count towards our 5 player limit? I have a feeling that other teams may have done something like this, or used the injury cover to sign a player that would have exceeded the salary cap, in past seasons. Not sure if that is true, or if it was the loop hole has now been closed?

Do feel sorry for him. Must be slightly pissed at his surgeon.

You can sign a visa player as cover, but only if you don't exceed the limit of 5 active visa players.

CCM signed John Aloisi as injury cover a few seasons, and paid him loads of money outside the cap. The rule was changed so that you can only pay them up to the amount of the player they replace gets.

Also, if a visa player gets injured, you can sign a visa player to cover them even if you already have 5 visa players signed.

That does make it hard to replace non-foreign players with someone of similar quality.

I too feel sorry for Pants. Despite the fact we should have known he was injury prone, this is such bad luck!

He looked very sharp last year during pre-season last year and I looked forward to seeing him in a stripey!
