In order of likelihood I reckon.

Ernie - 70%

Extension - 28%

Sold - 1%

W-League - 0.5%

Friendly match vs big name - 0.3%

New Stadium - 0.1%

Other 0.1%

all but one of these are good options

Have you any really bad ideas.  Just in case

New caterer for home games at the Ring of Fire

I could do it but cooking for 8- 15,000 could be a nightmare . Especially off one bbq

Actually I just walked past the ASB on Lambton Quay and their signs have been changed to ABS. I'd guess that major sporting entity they referred to is the national eggball team

My guess was correct, just saw it announced on the Herald website

Yeah there was a video a couple of hours about about ASB sponsoring the ABS.

Find a reporter that sticks to embargo times though...

What are they going to do, bar him? Who else would write about the Phoenix such is the dearth of coverage.

excellent news! Was starting to get a bit nervous about the prospect of Merrick going out of contract and leaving us.

Made my day.

Next up: licence extension.

Allegedly

I don't think it's good news, unless we can buy out Merrick 1 or 2 years early if his tactics start to flop again. There's not enough leeway to punish incompetence.

Coaches get sacked well short of contract length all the time. Just costs a bit more. Moyes didn't even last one year into a 6 year contract

Please tell me that my sarcasm meter is expired and I need to put in another 20c to avoid getting a ticket (or whatever these things take these days)

Well, I knew I'd get jumped on. But I think this is giving the man too much trust. Ricki went from a competent coach to being all out of ideas in much less than 3 years.

Ernie isnt Ricki

Because United fans hounded him out.

Three for me, and two for them.

But isn't this the payoff you have with the length of contracts - too long and you might be stuck with a dud, too short and you can lose someone earlier than you needed to. Ernie is the most successful coach in A League history, and has implemented exactly the sort of change in style the owners asked for. I think that's enough to deserve a 3 year contract

Since when do fans actually make this type of decision. What a childish comment, which is what I would expect from a clown.

Pleased about the re-signings.....Ernie has been excellent for the club.

I wonder if Greenacre will stay the full three years. He has already had two as assistant. At some point he needs to get out and take over somewhere as head coach. Maybe starting in Central League or even ASB or even back in the UK somewhere. I think he has his coaching badges...must be time soon to have a go at the top job somewhere. I guess one day he might coach the Nix but he would need to prove himself as a head coach somewhere first IMO

Permalink Permalink

5 years as an assistant is not long. Particularly in a league with only 27 games. Maybe he only aspires to be an assistant.

Then you are really saying that we should never give a coach 3 years. I don't think Ricki ever had any other ideas. He had one style and he knew it well. I think Merrick is more adaptable.

Nailed it. See NZ Warriors and Ivan Cleary. See Utah Jazz and Jerry Sloan. See Brisbane Broncos and Wayne Bennett. See NZ Breakers and Andrej Lemanis.

When you have a good coach, keep him and back him.

If Merrick did need to go for some reasons then the next most obvious options seem to be Declan Edge, Mike Mulvey, Ramon Tribulietx and Chris Greenacre. Of course you can take a risk and pick someone across the world. Even if Merrick did have a bad season then I would rather stick with him then pick up someone who is completely unproven.
