Confirmed as a marquee for Newcastle.

If they get the late 90's version he'll be huge.  If they get the last few years version local MacDonalds had better start stocking up now.

If that's true, it's an incredible signing, for better or for worse.

His goalscoring record in the "2nd tier" leagues like Brazil, Portugal and Turkey was phenomenal, better than a goal a game pretty much.

But his premiership stint was a disaster. And he has always had a massive reputation of having an ego the size of Brazil.

I've heard reports over the last couple of years of him trialling for random clubs all around the world.

I really can't see him being a success in the A League, instead his impact is more likely to be similar to Romario or Brian Deane, unless he's really sorted himself out physically AND mentally. Should be fun to watch though :)

As cultured as Che Bunce's left foot and as profilic as John Lammers

O honestly think the level of the A-League is climbing at a rate that will soon exclude alot of these older "marquee" siognings. That's one more reason why I think Ricki has the formula right, signign younger less known talents that still have a point to prove. . . .

I know that his mental issues have been equally prohibitive as the weight ones.

Does anyone think that this marquee gag is a bit of a gimmick?  Sydney have been fishing round to find someone, anyone, to be their marquee player.  Newcastle have now done the same thing, probably less succesfully.  I'm still to be convinced that it's worth the money.  The requiremenet that they have to be a household name before they are approved by the league and the financial limitations that naturally exist means that the person is most likely to be washed up...

I can't really see him making much of an impact and I don't see how it is good for team moral to have some washed up fat guy with a huge ego and big wages join the team. It would better to see up and coming players from overseas as a marquee even if they only stay one or two seasons.

Thats the issue I was getting at though.  If someone isn't a household name they won't be approved as a marquee player by the league.  I'm predicting Jardel to be a big failure...

I love this off his Wikipedia page:

In the Christmas break he returned to his native Fortaleza, where he injured his knee in a swimming pool fall

Lots of pools round Noocastle - he better be careful

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Jardel profile - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A1rio_Jardel

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Let's hope he doesn't decide to go swimming at Nobby's Beach, we may end up with another Pasha Bulker...

On Marquee players:

1. One type of marquee players is the type that really rests on reputation. They should be competent anough to still perform at this level, but also bring with them a big reputation that will attract punters.
2. The second type would be one who doesn't have that big a rep, but is very skillfull in some way. Essentially these aren't really marquee players, but they become star players.

For my mind Dwight Yorke fits into category one. He was beyond compitent though, so a shining example of a marquee player.

I think Daniel (and perhaps Cleberson) has the potential to become category 2. Not bought in on the basis of reputation, but looks to have real potential, and has played at a fairly high level before, so is not a complete unknown.

Jardel prbably fits into neither. How many people really know who this guy is? Will general non-trainspotting punters turn up just to see him based on reputation?

I agree with JamesDean

I think the question should be why has he only played 35 games in 4 years with 7 different clubs as he has done nothing since leaving Ancona in 2003 and Newcastle will be his 8th club in 4 years!

And what makes Jardel a "Household Name"?

You don't have to be a household name to be a marquee player. Look at Craig Moore. You just have to have performed well in a top league.

Jardel has done that, but it was nearly 10 years ago. Next they'll be signing fricking Maradona.

Of course not, by that definition only about 20 footbal players in the world would qaulify.

Maybe we should try and get that 9 year old Australian wonder kid? He's probably considered a house hold name now.

Nice call on Marquees Phil Style.

I reckon that until now, Dwight yorke has been the ultimate marquee. Came with a massive rep, but still did the business on the park. Hopefully juninho will do the same.

In category 2, Daniel and Cleberson do have the potential. One player that is the perfect example of category 2, is Fred from the victory last year. Came with a reasonable rep, but delivered way beyond what anyone expected to become probably the best import so far in the short history of the A-league. If he hadn't moved to DC, he would have become marquee player for another A-league team this year.

Who the xxxx is Jardel? I consider myself a football nut and i've never heard of him. Will he bring in crowds? Not on a non existent reputation.

Wonder if he's here on Friday.  Someone better warn the club there may be some big holes to fill in the pitch if he turns up as pie-laden as he's rumoured to be.
