We can't seem to score but we held them out quite well apart from that. If you look at both Gestede's goals they were both assisted by big hands onto Rufer's back. I wonder if at least the VAR could have been consulted. If it had been us scoring do you reckon we would have been awarded them? Certainly both were worth a look. The new guy looks promising though as he penetrated the area every time had had a run. Only one way from here I guess.

Other than ccm when ball got sent off early, we haven't been beaten easily or comprehensively. And we're not leaking goals outside of set pieces really.

Last season we had such good luck with injuries.

Their ex EPL striker scores a double.

Ours is on the physio's table in the Gong.

End of.

Actually without big bodied DeVere and Hemed, Nix look pretty small.

Davila was immense. Hopefully he keeps his chin up. Ball returning will help. But Hemed finally making an impression is now the key to this season, otherwise will be the spoon, or spoon runnerup, Not helped overall by zero home games, which is a massive hurdle.

ball alongside waine next game will be better for waine.  Marutovic is terrible.   Surely be better putting time into Sutton over him

yeah, marutovic is not the answer. timid, not a great touch, not great awareness.

Should not really be surprised at this result. MV has been very poor lately  but they lifted themselves tonight. The main difference between us and other teams is that we have one class player and all the others have 2/3 players that have the ability to change a game.

The man marking in set pieces have cost us games this season, somethings gotta give. Either the club lets talay spend money in this window or the players get replaced with more weenix kids.

That was terrible. Backing up from playing on Sunday would usually be a good excuse, but MVC played Sunday as well... they were already injury depleted and had used 2 subs after 20 mins, so our injuries are also no excuse. In past seasons losing 2-0 to MVC away is not shameful, but this is possibly the worst MVC team (in terms of performances this season, not necessarily on paper) since the A-League started.

We really are a one man team. Most players up to A-League level and no one is particularly bad, but only 1 player who is real quality which is not enough compared to other teams. Last year Taylor, Cacace, Hooper were above average a-league players, prior to that Krishna as well, this year all we have is Davila.

Recruitment and getting the cheque book out is the only answer, but obviously complicated by Covid.

Poor defending in set piece situations once again let us down. Don't know why Rufer was asked to mark Gestede again for the 2nd goal. Should've had McGing marking him. McGing is not strong, but tall. Could've at caused some competitions for headers with Gestede. Not surprised up front with our finishing. Our main strikers are out, and the kids were put up front. I don't really think its time for alarm bells. We should just do something about set pieces, and once we have full squad back, we should be good.

In my opinion, this is probably our strongest line-up. Payne brings more leadership as a CB and Fenton has impressed.

Davila, devlin and maybe piscopo would be starters for any other side. Other sides who also lost a lot of good players, but have replaced them with state league or youngsters who have really stepped up. The youth game in Aussie is possibly much better than anyone in the aleague realised.

Marking from dead balls has been the difference this season. We need a coach that can drill the technique in to our players, also attacking set pieces have netted basically nothing for years. Perhaps time to replace the man responsible for that, yep unpopular opinion but years of failure should not be acceptable.

i expect more consistency from Piscopo, he has moments - last week his miss touch took away a really good opportunity. he hasn't seen out a 90 yet, so hopefully as he gets fit so does his form improve. Ball back will help a little more consistency and guile in attack.

That's the big thing for me and why I'm not getting wound up about a mediocre season. I just want to get this godawful covid shark behind us so that we actually have a club for the future. Because the club is taking an absolute hiding financially and logistically, and even though same amazing hard work has gone into basing the team in Oz it's very far from ideal for the players and everyone involved in keeping a Nix presence in the league.

That's not to say it should be used as an excuse for poor results (none of the coaches/players would) but it's undeniable that we are at a significant disadvantage compared to all the other teams until we can get back to Welly and RoF.

Our set plays are so predictable. Two guys on the ball, surely they can move at  speed around the back of the wall and create havoc .We  get absolutely  no  advantage from the present lob and hope approach. When did we last score from set  play?

Well fudge! we go from probably our best game to our worst!

Melbourne were not great, they were one dimensional and it worked. Two set pieces and the most obvious thing happened, their target man won the header and scored. He won every header he was presented with and held the ball up well. something we did not do. I hoped Hemed was watching cos that is exactly what we need from him. Why Rufer was tasked with marking a guy 8inches taller than him I don't know. Surely MgGing would have been the better option? First goal would have been more difficult trying to leap over a guy who is your height, same with the second one.

Overall that was very disappointing, again we created plenty of attacking chances, just couldnt convert one of them. We have become very easy to mark out of games, if the defense can shut Davilla down like victory did, he ends up shooting and getting blocked. Still very effective and creative but he cant do it on his own.

also; how frail is Rojas? Much like he was when we first discovered him, the slightest clip and he's down on the ground injured.

Any one of us who play football has been kicked by a trailing foot like he was last night, but you shake it off and play on. For some reason watching him limp off with what is probably a bruise on the back of his ankle claiming he cant put pressure on his foot made me really angry. Just laughable how delicate he is.

Neither, but imo Rufer should've gone to ground when he felt the attacker all over him.

possibly, not sure the foul would have been called, but at least VAR would have reviewed it. Seems none of our guys will go down under physical contact from the opposition, least of all Davilla. He was fouled multiple times with diving tackles and shirt pulls ( and one shoulder charge) that went un-punished by the ref.

Should have got Malcolm Dunford in (I believe he lives in Melbourne) to teach the lads how to block from set pieces

That's way too harsh. Studs into the ankle area can do major damage and that was a pretty nasty foul by Muratovic. Don't forget when Marco did a hammy early on in the season he refused to come off, doing more harm to himself in the process and costing his team for the next 3-4 weeks.

wasn't studs into anything! more of a kick to the ankle, Davilla's studs into Broxham(I think) was way worse, and yet he got up and carried on.

Man, that was a hard watch, Piscopo was bad,  Looking for his own individual glory/highlights real moments far too often.  Davilla, was trying to do do too much (which is hard to blame him for).  Rufer was bad, looked like he was on tramadol.  We desperately needed to bring McGarry into the game higher up against that young newb, but we stuck narrow and "intricate".  Set pieces, its been said. Defensive midfield patterns would be a really good starting point first tho.

I also reckon Devlin would make any A league starting lineup.  Awesome kid.

I am gutted after watching this game but also think that in order for us to progress, Talay has to work with the people he already has, and that is what he is paid good money for.  I look forward to Hemed being fit and set up correctly, and working with David Ball and Davila to develop understanding. DeVere is a big loss but we have enough players to work with; Payne is not a bad CB in the interim.

I wonder if its time to change formation I feel like the 4-4-2 narrow isn't working could be a good idea changing to a back 3/5 we have the perfect wingbacks for it.

I was at AAMI Park last night so was interested to see the comments on the forum. I know things look different on TV compared to IRL, but I'm surprised by all the criticism levelled at Davila and Piscopo (although I don't say it's unwarranted). For me, Waine was worse. The kid's got no zip, guile or presence, and I'd rather see more of Lokoli-Ngoy who at least has some of those qualities.

Seriously we are back where we should be, at the bottom with no expectations and just getting a point out of a game let alone scoring a goal is like winning the league. Looks like we are just squatting in the Gong till next season.

I think the team is suffering from the fact that every game is an away game.  Can't be good when you play at home and the other team has more fans then you do.  I also get the impression the other sides have a lot more $$$ to throw about then us this season.

I honestly think with the amount of opportunities we create a 60 year old Wynton Rufer would score for this team. Would hit the target, would probably take up good positions in the box. Coveny out of retirement? He's in Aussie right?
