Maybe Jaap Stam would consider a six week post as a guest player ( one handed typing maybe)

If he and Nix blend a one year contract nexr season.  He could be the answer to your defence and help train guys there now.

Just dreaming about improving the A-League.

FORMER Dutch international defender Jaap Stam has ended his playing career.

The 35-year-old played his last match for Ajax Amsterdam on October 20 against NEC Nijmegen when he left the pitch injured.

Stam started his career in 1992 in the second division at Zwolle and earned his first big transfer four years later when he signed for PSV Eindhoven.

He joined Manchester United in 1998 and won the treble in his first season in England, before moving to Lazio in 2002 after he criticised United boss Alex Ferguson in his biography.

After three years in Rome Stam moved on to AC Milan and in 2006 he returned to the Netherlands to finish his career at Ajax, where he signed a two-year deal.

Stam won 67 caps and scored three goals for the Dutch team before ending his international career after the Euro 2004 finals in Portugal.

Now that's not a silly idea.  I wonder how the old retiring dudes from Europe feel about the A-League and New Zealand in particular.  Certainly wouldn't hurt to ask...

My only concern is do we want a quick fix or do we want a long term fix?? Age being a key point too.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

"Yip Jaap Stam is a bit Dutchman".  So the chant went.  A hero of Barcelona 1999.  Who gives a toss about his age and form.  He deserves to play for us.  Just don't invite either of the Neville players at the same time!

Um, the thing you're all missing is why he retired.

He's his quote:

"Physically, I no longer feel 100 percent," the 35-year-old Stam said. "During games, I was more worried about myself than the opposition. That is not acceptable - especially from somebody whose game is based on his strength. I want to give 100 percent, not 60 or 70."

He's crocked. I'd prefer our defenders to be fit.

Not missing anything.  Hero of Barcelona 1999.  Age and form irrelevant.  Bring on Jesper Blomkvist too...

Jaap Stamp just rung me about the prospect of playing for the Phoenix - I said "you're having a laugh".

Thank f**k c**tona forever is not involved in the club, or we'd have Dennis Law, Russel Beardsmore and Alex Best on contracts

How about Jaap Stam, Phil and Gary Neville, and Wes Brown as the Phoenix back four.  All in the squad of Man U at the 1999 Champions League final.  Now you get my point.

Definitely not Jaap Stam.

If Dodd has the ability to barge some little 18 yearold into the advertising hoardings, then Jaap Stam could probably throw them over the hoardings and into the crowd. I reckon we call him.

Maybe he is better even at only 60% than some of our defenders now

Bloody hell a crocked 35yr old sounds just like what our defence needs. Sure a lot of you are on the wacky backy before posting some of your ideas.

basically there are some on this board who think that if anyone who's played professionally overseas and still has a pulse is rumoured to be available then it is worth starting a topic about them- classic

Maybe the mods could create a forum for this.

these topics are pretty stupid you can hear of millions of players that would be good bu the reality is its not gonna happen we donmt need to bring anyone in just keep the same team and keep working on our defence if we rush panic and make chan ge sthen were gonna have to start from scratch again

Oh dear. Why don't we get the De Boer brothers and Kluivert as well. Hell, I'm sure Marc Overmars isn't doing much these days, we should get him too.

Kluivert would be a brilliant player to add to the squad. Not in defence obviously, but he's a fantastic player.

You football tragics and your seriousness.  You're all missing the point.  Imagine what an enraged Jaap Stam could do to the loathsome Joel Griffiths.  Now that would be worth seeing....

would kinda depend how close the bollock-puncher got to Jap's zimmer frame, then again if Mr Stam thought Joey Joel Griffiths was after his drugs - then it might be all on

I'd rather have Marcel Desailly first please....or Frank Lebouf if we must turn to an aging former star to fix our defensive problems.

He's here, he's there
He's every fookin where...Frank Lebooooouf, Fraaank Lebooooouf

why not Kenny Sansom?  or Viv Anderson?

How about Terry Butcher?  He's played international football, AND knows about the A League.

Why on earth would we keep bringing up names of players who have knocked it on the head, or admitted they are not good enough to play at a top level?  It makes no sense.

I would much rather we kept faith with young players who could potentially reap rewards for us longer term, than equally big risks on has-beens who might be able to offer a short term fix.

I can't wait for the day when Smeltz has a bad game, and people start suggesting that Devine is available.

It amazes me how people think that any old European player will instantly come to the Phoenix. The Phoenix is a really good club but we cant just pull any 35 year old worldbeater out of out arses. Some fans really need to wake up to themselves this is the Fcuking Aleague.
