The Football Association are to investigate the touchline fracas which marred Sheffield United's 2-1 win over Barnsley on Tuesday.
Both managers and their benches were forced apart by police and stewards as Barnsley boss Simon Davey complained about the use of the multi-ball system.
The incident was included in referee Grant Hegley's report and the FA will now examine video evidence.
Both Davey and Blades counterpart Kevin Blackwell played down the incident.
<!-- E SF -->Davey said: "It was nothing really. I was disappointed with the multi-ball system. That was the issue."
"When Sheffield United scored their first goal all the balls disappeared. We had 24 when we were drawing and then there's one ball in the stadium when we're losing the game.
"I spoke to the referee and there were words exchanged, but it's nothing."
Blackwell, who refused to comment on the police's intervention, said: "I don't control the multi-ball system and it never went missing. I don't know what he's on about."

Because Australians are evil versions of us of course!

for one they are like 5 year olds at about 2 foot high. how can they throw a ball ????????????
Ive always wondered why don't our ball kids just drop the ball on the ground for the opposition players when i watch on TV i see the kids in Aussie do it to our guys
When John Beck was manager of Cambridge United, he used to train the ball boys. They used to throw the ball back quickly for the home team, but delay it and throw it back to the away teams feet. They also used to dry the ball for their own team, but roll it along the ground on wet days for the away side.
Other masterpieces were to grow the grass long in the corners to suit his long ball game, set the heating in the oppo's dressing room to very hot on hot days and I believe moved the away teams dug out so somewhere illogical so they couldn't send instructions very easily.
I'm slightly disappointed!

Let's start with some training. Here's lesson 1: Giving the ball back to the opposition...
