not silly for those lower division teams over there, make cash and maybe find a player

that's actually a really smart way to make some money and find players who are actually willing to play for the club......not sure how it would work for the nix though, not really a big enough pool of players who'd be that desperate to play in the a-league.

i think this would actually work here too. After all, they're looking for work, and playing a game is like submitting a CV. Bit more real than a youtube highlights reel.

Would give the fans something for the offseason too!

interesting read, not a bad idea at all really.

personally, I think that's a very smart idea. After all, very few clubs are in a healthy financial state at the moment. That would be a good way to cut the cost of flying and providing accomodation for trialists.
The downside is that you are going to get "less credited" footballers at trials, although with the level of popularity of the sport, I am sure there are a lot of decent players who never get a good shot at it and whose career could blossom from taking a chance.

In a way, look at Manny. He wasn't exactly setting the world on fire in Australia, and yet he was given an opportunity and made the most of it - I mean he even got to play for Malta!

This.

There will be lots of rubbish players who would try, but you only need to find one or two to make it worthwhile each year.

Someone want to take this to RH? Actually do we have a way we can make this club a little more fan run?

I.e. guys like HN, Smithy, Greenie pull together our latest and greatest ideas and once a month put it to RH & TS?

Yeah, but this is just a form of exploitation, like the "pay-to-become-an-intern" scams which are very popular at the moment.

ANother possibility would be to have an A-League trial in England or wherever.  All the A League clubs/managers could be represented and players would know that they had a chance of impressing 10 clubs at once

love the idea.

Just wondering how many international trialists we would get? Or if it would be mostly kiwis and aussies.

I think they would need to be playing with our current squad in these trials as to get an idea of their standard compared to Ifill etc

exactly, so it allows for the chumps to turn up - get turned away at the fdirst fitness test and the club still makes $200 per numpty regardless. It's a pure profit scenario.

But what if you get numptys that are actually fit? Like runners... but have no football skills?

Then they will probably fail the skills part of the trial and suffer the same end result!

man it would be sweet to get a goalkeeping gig as a reserve keeper, if only i could fool them into signing me- man what a life

OK, so a possible/plausible scenario from this would be:

  • Prospective players pay, lets say $500, to earn the right to a trial with the Wellington Phoenix FC. All other expenses covered by the hopefuls unless the club decides otherwise (ie they may have a player in mind por a paid trial and invite them to attend to compete with others)

  • The scheme attracts around 30-40 players from across Australia, NZ and further afield.

  • Minimum of 30 players x $500 = $15,000 Cash Money which the club can re-invest in the playing squad!

$15,000? You mean, about a quarter of the wages of a squad player? Not exactly high finance.

Beats paying for a small group of select players to come and trial...

I think the money wouldn't be the main factor there. As already said, it would give us a chance to actually look at quite a few players, for free - which is different from, say, watching videos of Toto and thinking he's the new Pele!
If we made $15000 and ran it in the UK, that would barely cover the costs. But can you imagine how many hopefuls from League 1 or 2 or even lower would be keen to get a shot at playing professionally in Australia/NZ? WE could sign some decent talent at no cost!

UK lower leagues are in a poor state at the moment, there are a huge number of unattached players and wage pressure is down substantially.  Will try and find source.  Personally I think there are loads of players who would be interested - we have 2 in our team already and we have trialled plenty more.  It's the quality that is the issue

Really? Greenacre we signed early on, Ifill came here as the last resort, and Greenacre's mate came here, played a pre-season game and took off pretty quickly. That's the only 3 players from the English lower divisions (with no NZ/Australian background) that have linked up with the Nix in some way. These kind of players basically see the A-league itself as the very last resort, and there's more appealing destinations in the league than Wellington at any rate.

Yet we think we'd have heaps of lower league players willing to pay (and presumably cover all their expenses while at it) to travel around the world just to trial with the Phoenix? Really?

Otherwise I heard Nonu is available. Could add some bite into our midfield?

I agree with you, but I think the idea is to hold a trial in the UK. still, i'm not buying that on contract League 1/2 players would want to pay for a trial for a club on the other side of the world.

Bugger em then.
Couldnt hurt to have it over here somewhere.Or OZ even/as well.
That way we might find another Marco or Manny.
If Johnny Foreigner did show up, we'd know they were serious because they've
dug into their own pockets to be there.
Just saying

Hmm, from the tone of some of the discussion here I got the impression that the talk was of holding such a trial here, which makes no sense to me at all.

If it were to be held in the UK, it would make marginally more sense - it could potentially offset the cost of the travel to the UK for the Nix staff (since presumably they're looking to go there at any rate to do some scouting) if enough people were interested. I agree with your thinking that decent players at that level would not be interested in paying to trial with a club from NZ they'd never heard of. But if 20 or so guys from the conference or so paid their share to trial, it could at least help with the travel cost, which in current circumstances is not something to scoff at. But overall think it's more hassle than its worth.

I think both ideas have merit.

Hold one down here for local players, and one in the UK / Europe for those players.

Almost like a player expo...

Maybe thats a good business idea.. you have player expos in different places.. where players join to play in exhibition matches for a small fee (per match or something) and then coaches get invited to come to these exhibition matches and watch the talent.
