What do you think will qualify as a successful first season for Phoenix FC?

I think the following would indicate a success (using the mighty Knights as a benchmark):

  1. Not finish on the bottom of the table (and top 4 in second season)
  2. Average home ground attendance above 6,000
  3. Leading goal scorer getting more than 10 goals in the season
  4. Manager not getting red carded (though Nevin did show a fair amount of passion for the Knights)
  5. Only 1 manager for the entire season
  6. Money in the bank at seasons end.

While some of this sounds pretty mediocre you have to remember they still dont have any players at this stage so it is definitely going to be challenge

Finishing 5th or 6th would be fine in the first season, anything better than that and it would be a bonus. Playing exciting attacking football, scoring goals. Let's see more of that rather than the typical kiwi pass the ball across the back, slow and pedestrian style as shown by the All Whites on their last couple of outings.A few of us will have recollections of the first two seasons of the Kingz when they played some fabulous football. The 3-2 last minute victory over Northern Spirit being one game I won't forget for a long time...and a thrilling spanking of Marconi. Wynton Rufer did get a lot of stick for his selection policy but there is no doubting he had the team playing some good football. Sadly from season 3 onward there was rarely anything remotely exciting played by the Kingz/Knights. If they can get a good style going people should come back for more.

Given that we have started late i would rather not see overstated and unrealistic  targets set, would much rather see us succeed with some lower targets. After all its not those of us who will turn up no matter who will help this club head towards succeeding  but those fringe fans who we can convince its worth committing to the cause.

staying in the league for season two

1. Finishing above bottom spot. 2. Spending a few weeks at least in the mid-table area 3. Top goalscorer to make double figures 4. Consistent crowds over 5000

That'd be pretty good IMO

I think 5000 and you could be rattling round in the cake tin.  I think 10,000 average would be considered succesful, and I think necessary for the sustainability of the club.

How about getting a major sponsor?  Been a while since real money was involved in football in NZ.  Terry may want Century City across the front of the tops though I guess...

If the team is succesful and proves themselves worthy, i.e mid - top of table and pulls around 8-10,000 fans then the big $$ sponsorship deals will come but in the mean time we'll probably see Century City, something unheard of or nothing on the front.

People through the gate will be the yard stick against which the club shall be measured.  After that style of football followed by results.

Well, the good thing is that we can't get much worse. I simply want the Nix to be competitive - not to roll over like the Knights and the Kingz were known to do. Also, I want to see attacking football - not boring English-style defensive football.

I'm not expecting us to do amazing in the first season but I'm hoping for some positive signs. Hope that the Welly crowd  comes out in full force too.

Not finishing last I think is a good start, but I think the key point is being in with a chance of the finals till maybe the last couple of weeks. If we're out of the running too early, that's when the only people turning up are the diehards.

I think an entertaining style of football and being competitive (ie scoring goals and not conceeding too many) are essential.

Lets face it the only be all and end all criteria for the moment is SURVIVAL and anything else is a bonus, which ultimately means crowd numbers. If you get the crowds in (assuming you're not spending more money than you're getting), everything else can be addressed as needed.

I do think we've only got one shot at this (ie one season to make it clear we deserve to be there). The FFA need a minimum 8 clubs and with the additional clubs coming in 2008, if we don't make the grade they can cut as easy as pie.

(1) Leading goal scorer 10+ goals -> (2) Not finishing bottom -> (3) Crowds above 6K -> (4)Money in the Bank --> (5) 1 Manager for the Season.

So basically, Phoenix needs a quality striker and a team to back the striker up and the rest will follow...so who's the striker?
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Strikers?

How about from Totori, Brockie, Coveny + 1 other quality import?
football tragic for too long

Killen
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

The obvious one would be Youngheart Manawatu and Richmond United's Ben Totori.

Dean Windass at Hull City and Dion Dublin at Norwich could be outside bets....hahaha

Quality striker and New Zealand....um, the two don't quite go together in a sentence just yet....

Weigh it up,  Totori is the top goalscorer in the NZFC...the barn door strikers that we had playing for the All Whites in San Jose and Maricaibo had an opportunity and whilst NZFC isn't international football, the game is all about scoring goals. 0 goals scored, 9 conceded. We can't score goals.

Its a famine at international level so we've got to step down a level and try Totori. Other Solomon Islanders have proven themselves in the old NSL so I'd have some confidence thathe could step up to this level. If he's given good service there is no reason why he won't score....so picking a mobile midfield that cam provide the ammunition now becomes important.

Killen would be nice but he's busy making more of a high profile career with Hibernian. He's better off there rather than coming to the Phoenix.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Gotta agree with you on both posts Kiwi. Sounds like the masses are saying Totori needs a chance.

I'd just love it if we signed some foreigner (relatively unknown) and who just turns up smokes it for the Phoenix.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Yeah, no luck on Killen.  Spoke to his mum over the weekend and he's settled overseas.  Good coin and interest from English clubs (a move to Cardiff during the transfer window only fell over due to his injury).

I'd love to see one of our players being in a media team of the year!!
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Oh dear, does that mean the Nix will be signing Andrew Dewhurst? Or worse still, that complete t**ser Martin Devlin?. You won't see "Devers" around the Phoenix unless they are winning or nicknamed the Red Devils, or unless he's invited into a corporate box. Shame on any corporate allowing him into their box too I say. They should be shamed into shameville if they do. Too many of these so called media types have their heads too far up their own anoos.
And yeah I didn't misread what the above posting was really meaning. In order to have a player be selected in the team of the year we're going to have to see some outstanding regular performances on the pitch. That is going to be up to the players. Be nice to see Totori surprise the fellas over in West Island.

Has it been a long easter Kiwi Canary!?
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Depends on how you wish me to quantify the word LONG. Certainly a bit miffed that the Easter Bunny never brought chocolate around, but Melville United won two from two over the LONG easter weekend and Norwich shot down the mighty Hull City two days ago and might create history in winning two games in a row if they can bowl West Brom at home tommorrow... Other than that I'm enjoying the debate with my Melbourne Victory cob.

The Phoenix should definitely use 2 of their 4 import spots 2 buy strikers (preferably from africa/south america) and that will force Brockie 2 play well if he wants any game time.
