I've read some of the comments regarding opinions of different TV
shows, radio hosts, newspaper writers etc. Some I agree with,
some I don't, but there is one point to be made.
If you like something, or don't like something, then tell the people responsible. If a journalist writes a good piece, then write or call the paper and say how much you liked it. If you enjoy a show on TV, do likewise. All that feedback is logged and used by those outlets to judge performance and stuff. For instance, the positive response to TV3s article on Covs would have given them a real buzz, whether they admit it or not.
But likewise, if you don't like something, you need to make that clear too, and the reason why. I've heard some criticism of Fred and Elrick etc - tell the people at SKY... maybe they haven't heard that kind of feedback before, maybe they think these guys are universally popular... maybe they get loads of positive feedback about them...
the point is that football fans will get what they are given, unless they do something to change it... If 10,000 people contacted a paper or a TV station and all asked for the same change, it would be noted... the change might not happen, but that kind of response can't be ignored.
so by all means vent on the forum, that's what it's for! but if you want something to change, you need to voice it directly and sensibly to those who need to hear it

Good points Crosby's.
A few YF members have recently sent feedback to media on
certain footballing issues. Some of thes communications are copied
into posts within the growing vault of info here on these forums.
These coms have been from both positive and negative
perspectives.
It agree that sensible reponses is what is required. However
not all of us are comfortable sending a well thought out letter,
and prefer to simply vent frustration. So in that respect the
forums can help becuase the few of us that do write letters can
guage the overall feeling here on the forums and then focus that
feeling into criticism or priase, back to media.

There is a fine line that we have to be careful of, though, with
upsetting the media. The last thing we need is any part of
the media to get pissed off with us and generate loads of negative
press.

yep, that's just my point - if you send in abusive-type stuff,
they'll ignore it... but if you're accurate and considered, then
they have to at least note it... for example, if you said "I can't
stand Mark Elrick, I think he's cr*p", then nothing will happen...
but if you say "Why can't Mark Elrick finish a coherent sentence,
or make comments relevant to the game he is commentating", then you
have some specific, constructive points...
and yes, if media get positive feedback, they generally respond - it's not by accident that TV3 put effort into their football stories... they have received positive responses in the past, and so therefore put more into it and hunt out decent stories.
but seriously, don't underestimate how much change you can effect... you are SKY's paying customers, so have a right to get your point across... if they thought thousands of people were switching off because of their "staff" they would do something about it.

If a few of us write to a paper and tell them that they are doing a
great job with the coverage so far, but there are some inaccurate
comments within one of their articles that gives people a negative
view of the organisation, then we get an article in the next days
paper highlighting everything we are doing wrong (too much personal
abuse, not enough moderation of this forum, use of psedenoums,
etc).
We have to be very careful about how we treat the media.

yeah the media's just a lil bunny wabbit that cries if you

the media have a lot more power than we do, so we need to make sure
we do not upset them without justification.
If the press start saying things after losses about how the
fever crowd were boring, and the team was useless, do you think
people reading that are going to come along?

that's true, but the media gauges public opinion and and uses
it to prioritise article space. It doesn't create interest in
the same way that this forum does...
some of the music i listen to and love used to
get no mainstream media coverage whatsoever but still garnered
a large and loyal fanbase, from the inside out...eventually, if
something gets a large enough following the media is forced to
report it because a certain percentage of those people watch the
news and/or buy the paper

media guys have to fill so many column inches of newsprint or hours
of tv per week, so I think any constructive suggestions to fill
those column inches or hours are probably welcomed.
A couple I've sent in were to TV3 - one was to provide cover of the pre-season matches from Aussie of the WP and if it required video footage to get an airing then they may be able to score some footage from SBS.
I've also suggested to get a 'different' angle on the upcoming game between WP and Melbourne to send a TV crew down to Waitangi Park on Saturday to film the rival fans' friendly match. The intro piece on the day could be 'WP lose to Melbourne' or vice-versa depending on the result - then cut to the video of the fans' game .....
I'll be interested to see if anything happens as a result.

I agree. We're all very quick to jump on the media but we really
need to let them know when they're doing a good job. If we do, then
they know the following is there. If we don't, they could assume
no-one cares.
So we should email the guys at Newstalk ZB and the Dom Post and tell them they're doing well, and we should continue to lobby the TV stations (particularly TV1) to help them up their game.
In saying this, if we get 15000 to games they will have no option to cover the Phoenix.

and this rugby loving nation will love to see us fail, i read on
this site a while ago some bad things happened involving
the victory and the media.

I had John Campbell on one of my flghts recently and filled him in
the size of the Yelow Ever website and to congratulate TV 3 on the
exposure of the Mighty Phoenix , he said he would pass on my
positive comments to the powers to be .He was also surprsed about
the size and support that has been generated here too.
