Melbourne wishes you luck, Wellington.

I am a 16 year-old, very proud member of the mighty Melbourne Victory. I've been a member of the club since before they kicked a football around and have missed 1 game (exc. away fixtures) in their two years in existence. And as a chagrined fan who was happy to show support for the Knights, I say good luck to the Phoenix for their debut year and beyond.

I am one of those who believe New Zealand have a rightful spot in the A-League, be it an Auckland team, Wellington side, or a NZ outfit. I am inclined to think with the right ownership and management, both New Zealand Soccer and Football Federation Australia can benefit from a team across the Tasman. That factor was obviously where the problem lay with the Knights, and after the financial and socio-economic struggle the Football Kingz suffered in the twilight years of the NSL, I cannot see why NZ's A-League side was based in Auckland. The crowds were partially better for the inaugural season, but the "honeymoon" was quite ephemeral.

I speak this from brief experiences - attending two games at North Harbour last year while visiting family (NZ 0-4 Melbourne and NZ 1-0 QLD), and while the results and competitiveness of the games were quite contrasting, the atmosphere was non-existent. This isn't in comparison to 50,000 chanting Melbournians in an indoor stadium - we all know that apart from a small group of Bloc 5 fellas, it was dull. "Village green" dull.

Which was sad for the squad in particular, really. After closely observing them for the majority of Version 2, they to me were up there in the harder working squads in the league. They were short of your Thompsons, Carles, Coricas and Freds, but the passion was clearly evident. You could see it during their celebrations after Buari's stellar strike.

But I believe with new management, a new squad, a bigger and better fan base, and a internationally accredited coach, the pattern of results could also be new! I expect to see this after the first year though, as they still have some creases to iron out.

I hope you'll all be happy to talk football with a Melbourne man, as I like chatting with fans from other sides to get their point of view...

(Except for the solipsistic, arrogant bastards from Sydney, Adelaide and Queensland)

Melbourne Victory wishes you luck, Wellington Phoenix FC!

Yeah what about Bloc 5 aye ya f**king c**t!?!?!? Week in week out for 7 years if that's pathetic then i'd like to see you do the same because you probably wouldn't and if the Phoenix are sh*t you're not gonna get any better crowds, you're just begging that the Phoenix are good otherwise all you Wellingtonians are gonna be found out when you get sh*t crowds just like we did in the last few seasons.

Three for me, and two for them.

Calm down Buffy II you potty mouth. That criticism is obviously aimed at the people who weren't at the games not the ones who were. I'm sure everyone thinks you're a legend for going to watch the Knights but if you climb down off that cross for a minute you might want to be a little more positive about the franchise succeeding in Wellington. Otherwise you just come across as a parochial, back-biting c**t who deserves to have seven years of loyal support flushed down the toilet.

I am positive about the franchise mate but let's face facts here what makes you think Wellington are gonna get better crowds than Auckland if the Phoenix are bottom of the league by miles like the Knights???

So Kev's "great feeling" that the crowds will be sooooo much better in Welly is based around a successful team, which i hope will come to fruition. But, his "great feeling" will be well off the mark should the franchise fail.

Three for me, and two for them.

It won't fail.
Even if we finish bottom (which we won't) the crowds in Wellington will still be larger than Auckland.
Though it will take some beating to be louder than Bloc 5 as they were awesome!!!

That's hardly a good reason to call the poor guy a "f**king c**t" and then launch into an Auckland vs Wellington rant.

Are you bi-polar?
Are you having your period?
Are you upset because there was no Americas Cup racing today?
Do you have a persecution complex stemming from being bullied as a child?
Are you going through a grieving process as a result of losing your beloved but essentially useless Knights?
Do you only find happiness in the mis-fortune of others? (which would explain why you supported the Knights)

Maybe you should seek some anger management counselling Buffoon II.

Just trying to help.

Who is this victorytilidie ?   Not the 16 year old boy he claims to be, that's for sure!  I don't trust him or his fancy language - "chagrined, ephemeral, solipsistic".

This is a footy forum not an exercise in thesaurus usage.

sizzla - shutup mate, you sound like a tit.

Buff is right - if the Phoenix are rock bottom like the Knights were, I'd like to see you lot getting 10,000 a game. My arse. And this thing 'we wont fail'. Yeah, nice one. You cant justify that, theres plenty of factors and things that can go wrong that will make this fail. Optimistic is 1 thing, f**king stupid comments is another.

Is it true that by the end of Version 2 bloc 5 consisted of a mere 30-odd people?

I'm only suggesting that it doesn't seem like something that's worth getting sooooo angry about!

But it's my fault, I should have known better than to defend someone from being called a "f**king c**t". Regardless of what he said I made the mistake of thinking that it was a bit of an over the top reaction by Buffoon II.

I also under-estimated the elitist and arrogant attitudes held by some Bloc 5 members who are clearly going through a painful period of transition and don't need their sensitivities being pricked.

You are right, we should all hope that win, lose or draw the Wellington crowds do not exceed those seen in Auckland over the past few years because after all it's Auckland's reputation that's really important here - not a successful NZ A-league franchise.

Lighten up you muppets. We all know you got shat on by the Knights owners and management but don't take it out on the rest of us. Wellington hasn't even played a game yet and you lot are already circling like vultures!

All of you calm down FFS.  This club needs everyones support... those that stood by the Knights and the later years Kingz deserve some credit, not a bagging, it's the general Auckland sports public that needs to be sworn at, and I suggest if Buffy steps back he'd know that.

Buffy, Benny there is happy median here, alot of those getting on the Phoenix bangbus don't know the history and effort that went in to maintaining an atmosphere and loyalty in Auckland .  You need to cut them some slack, and Syd... less of the tourette's style swearing outbursts.

I can easily wield a banstick so all of you calm down.

No, by the end it was much higher... in the middle of v2 there were points that it was probably as low as 30 though.

I agree that the main reason for the lack of crowd support in Auckland was the performances of the team. The same could very well happen here in Wellington. I think it is presumptuous of my fellow wellingtonians to think that folks are gonna turn out in their droves to watch the Phoenix if they get pummelled every week. The main (albeith not the only) driver behind crowd support in all team sports, globally, is performances on the pitch.

OK thanks for clearing that up - I guess it would have been higher towards the end when they had a better finish. And yes, the Bloc 5 guys are passionate fans, especially to be there week in week out with their record. It's the people that weren't there that deserved the beating. But now it's time to move on from that era.

About $10 they charge over here mate ... :) :) :)

ah look, we DO wish you hguys well with the new team. bear in mind that there was some anti-NZ A-League team talk over here whilst the Knights went and self-destructed, so that is why we are keen to see you guys succeed as such. Obviously with NZ being in Oceania and so on, there is a lot of political reasoning as to why NZ (i.e. via Wellington) have a team in the A-League, and I won't go into that here.

I suppose that, all we are saying over here, is that we hope that Wellington Phoenix FC makes a go of it, otherwise the anti-NZ A-League sentiment may come back.

We;re trying to help you guys out, that's all!!!

Thank you, and regards

mate i support the hurricanes so i now what you mean

i don't think anyone could disrespect bloc 5's loyalty  if it wasn't for you guys there wouldn't have been an atmosphere at all for the home games
but north harbour stadium wasn't the best place to base a footy team really especially one with little in fact no history at all for any of the clubs the kingz the knights, towards the end they had deals like " you pay and a mate comes free" and still the got the same size crowd  3,500

that and they rarely won although i was there to see them win their first ever home game 1-0 against adelaide

Another tard here wishing you luck, especially against Adelaide and Sydney.

Here's hoping you get a top four finish.

Nice post mate.

Wellington have already supported teams that have failed on numerous occasions - the Wellington Lions and Hurricanes. We have experience with these sorts of things. :] If I remember right, Aucklanders stopped going to games when their rugby team was dominating because it was 'getting boring winning'.

Dear Fellow wellington phoenix supporters

As A Kiwi of Greek Heritage living in Australia, I take this opportunity to wish wellington phoenix all the luck in the world

Iam proud to finally see wellington field a team , that hopefully encompasses some good local talent  and some good international signings.

Whilst iam a very happy and proud Melbourne Victory member, I will take out a membership in order to support this new club,  I urge many Greek Kiwis as well as kiwis in general to do the same and support the club where necessary, I hope to attend some games in wellington when on business trips throughout the year

Best wishes to all

They're my 2nd team as well. I dont know why, but I had a soft spot for the Knights. Might have been my sympathetic side talking, but they just seemed a lot more hard-working than Sydney, Adelaide etc. and they played fair and tough as well. The way we like it.

Over here? Until late last year I lived next door to Telstra Dome - I know the place like the back of my hand. Advice for touring fans - eat at the food court outside and don't give a cent to the swine caterers inside.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
It's hard to do that now with the new passout rule.

For those of you who don't know: The Telstra Dome have now scrapped the traditional pass-out system for the 2007 Australian Footy season.  Anyone who wishes to puff a ciggy can exit the gates to do so, but are restricted inside a caged area, which doesn't allow them access to the concourse outside. Telstra Dome management say they were concerned with the kicking of footballs along the concourse, but we all know it is to stop the new food courts outside the ground from attracting business with their cheaper prices by forcing people to buy from inside the stadium.

It's a disgrace. So now you have to eat before/after the event, or smuggle your own food in. BYO food is banned also by the way. If you get caught.

Actually as of this week it's changed back again. Telstra Dome have caved in when faced with 20,000 losing the plot every week and the potential of a big fat lawsuit from the people who own the stores outside. Rarely do I ever say this but it's a victory for common sense

Really? Never heard about that. Good to hear. I reckon if there was a gunman going ballistic and people were running outside trying to escape over or through the cages, it would be chaotic. Not likely, but you never know anymore.
