With kick-off this weekend, Merrick has placed a strong emphasis on attacking play in the final week of preparations, seeking a repeat of last season's free-scoring ways.
As a result, import midfielder Carlos Hernandez has been given the green light to fire at will.
Having come to the A-League with a reputation for long-range goals, the Costa Rican international has already scored one from distance against Perth Glory in the pre-season cup.
Victory needs more goals from midfield, which is where Hernandez, known in Costa Rica as El Zorro, comes in.
Merrick has given him permission to shoot whenever he is within his extended range.
"Yes, any time he's in and around the box," Merrick said yesterday.
"He hit a 30m belter against Perth and we know what he's capable of. He's beginning to settle and get the confidence to do that and we've given him the confidence to shoot.
