Check this link for US Major League Soccer Salaries:  http://www.mlsplayers.org/salary_info.html Duncan Oughton on $US72,000 - no listing for Simon Elliot. Look at a lot of them, not on very much at all - this bodes well in attracting future Kiwi US College stars back home to the Nix.

Ye i agree in a way but Duncan Oughton is average and that US!!! 72 000. Plus america is looked at much more by european clubs then the A-League. But hopefully and i believe that will change as this league no doubt will become very big. Its just a matter of time.

Simon Elliot may not be there because he hasn't played in the MLS for two seasons. He's at Fulham.

Interesting point, I don't know the answer, but how prevalent is it - MLS players going to clubs in Europe for good money? I know 2 of our guys did it, but who else?

McBride, Bocanegra and Dempsey for Fulham
Convey for Reading
Beasley at Man city.

There have been a few, McBride and Nelsen probably the two most successful.

Did you see Andy Boyens, only 30 grand odd, possibility?

I heard his draft stock dropped because there were rumours of him joining the A-League. The Scouts rated him the best defender in that draft so he must be pretty good.

Lots of interest in Elrich over in Europe - don't think he'll be back for a few years.  Has a very good deal at Fulham (relative to what's available over here).  Personally, I think he'd be better off over here for a couple of years because he got shafted in Korea, and he's getting the bad end of the stick in London as well.

Dont forget about Tim Howard, Marcus Hanneman, and Kasey Keller. The MLS doesnt make money b/c of the four big sports in America. Which sucks. I love football(european) more than any other sport here.

I remember reading something on soccernet a while back about how trainees over there (people who sign out of college) start on like 25 grand .... and they have quite a harsh salary cap over there I think

Tough salary cap in the US.  Tough salary cap in A-League.  $1.8m (plus contingency and marquee player) to cover 23 players doesn't leave a lot of room to move - around $102k per player (on average), including all fringe benefits.  The best players at the club will be on more than that - which means that a number will have to be on a lot less.

A-League:
I suppose the younger players would sign on for around 30 - 45 k each maybe? (comparative to a uni grad starting wage, depending on industry). If a club can sign 5 or 6 of these younger guys who are good prospects that would go quite some way towards freeing up ($300k) some wage bill. I suppose in the end a squad of 20 might be enough, but that could be risking it.

I'm suspectign that each team is probably going to have 2 or 3 players who earn $150-200k pa. And the rest wil be between $60k (squad player) to $100k or so (first team regular).

The bad part about the MLS is once you sign with them. It basically takes an act of congress to get out of there. Celtic offered New England 2 million for Shalrie Joseph but the MLS denied it. I think they are afraid of being the place where people start out and retire out. Which is basically what is has become sadly.

Yeah i guess so, but sill a far cry. Good to see Beckhams enjoying his life there...6.5Mill, o and .04 cents.

Bugger - and think of poor little Josh Tudela, one of Beckham's midfield 'partners' - 30 K compared to 6,500 K  ...that's only a simple matter of 217 times more pay...

Or, even worse...

Bechkam, makes a back pass to Lance Friesz in goal who clears up field - 12.9 K  compared to 6,500 K  - the sniffling amount of 504 times pay difference...

Is Beckham really worth the equivalent of 504 junior level goal keepers - that's just plain fantastic...

Hope Beck's has thick skin...

Maybe not in terms of pure football skill, but certainly in terms of marketting value. He's a celebrity for more reasons than just footah. And poepl in the USA tend to have a thing for celebrities.

You reckon he'll do the rounds and play at loads of seppo clubs, ala Cryuff in the 70's?

That's never as much fun though is it Jaza.

MtJ has established that as the financial level for this wind-up, therefore at that level it remains

Besides, you'd be better blaming that for the Blings last 12 months than the fact that the rest of your squad is generally rubbish.

I refute use of the word "generally". I prefer "occasionally" and "too often for my liking"

Still... Middleby <3 <3

I don't know what you base that on? I was earning far more than most of those MLS players working overseas but I now work in NZ for a fraction of the income I used to be on. Everyone has their own reasons for moving, taking up new challenges etc. Besides, it looks to me that the A League is more than comparable in terms of salaries offered to the MLS.

Remeber thats american dollars, and im sure the life in America is a lot better than it would be in NZ. Its all about the quality of life and the money, you cant have one with outh the other.

sorry uncle steve could you please explain how life is better in the USA? i can go to uni in wellington without worrying about terrorists and crazy shooters. i can also walk down the street knowing that i won't have to see too many fat people (god bless their souls), a difference from the current 31% obesity rate in the USA. life is good

Man, Newtown must have changed a lot since I lived there then!

Most of the "fat people" live in the midwestern region of America or middle America I guess you could say. And most places you really dont have to worry about people shooting you. That is only in really big cities. Of course there are going to be people everywhere who are off their rockers. But life here isnt to bad depending on where you live. Where I live in Ohio there are a lot of welfare recipients. Which is frustrating to see a 500lb woman with 6 kids living off the fact that I work. Anywho. I think the best place to live is where you feel most at home. What is life in NZ like? I have always wanted to go.

We're getting a bit off track here; different people have different priorities and aims in life to others. You just have to look at some of the Aussies returning to the A League from good positions at overseas clubs. Its not all about money. I've lived all over the world (including the US) and it is entirely subjective if you were to say life is better there than  anywhere else (including NZ).

The original point of the thread was to show that MLS salaries are not so great that they would be an impediment to getting MLS type players down here playing in the A League. I still support that thesis.

I lived in America for 12 years Doug. Never got shot, never got mugged, never cme into any contact with terrorists. Went back this year, didnt get shot, didnt get mugged, and still did not come into any contact with terrorists.

Next time your refer to America go a little further on your research than Prisionbreak and 8 Mile. Awsome.

Plus people with the cash live a better life in america with luxuries and lifestyle ect...

America is can be just as bad and just as good as anywhere else. All depends on where you live and who you hang around with like anywhere else in the world....anywho. I would actually love to see some MLS players go to the A-league and visa versa.
