Since no one has started it yet and we cant all afford to text our choice...

Hearfield for me, was all action 1st half drew a number of fouls leading up to the red card, and pretty much domminated the right flank for the first half, and put body on the line early in the second which probably led to his quieter latter period.

Lochy  also had a good game, as did Brown I thought.

Lochhead gets the nod over Hearfield for being the best defender in the A-League for two and a half seasons now. Oska2009-12-05 07:43:09

Hearfield for me. Proved all the doubters wrong on this forum. Looking to see him consolidate his place in the next few games and shut Manny out

Doubters? i havent seen any Disco doubters?

I was one - there are a number of others.  Early on in Phoenix career he had a tendency to run the ball into no mans land and get swamped, and with the recent shift to right back there are questions over his defensive abiltiy.

But you have to admit he has improved immensly over the past 3 seasons. We saw that last night.

He certainly has, and played very well last night.  I think Ricki is right in trying to make him a wing back, I think that will be his best position as long as he can learn to defend - I don't think he was overly tested last night, Melbourne were pushing more up the middle than down the flanks.

I was surprised Melbourne didn't try and target our Disco man.

Troy was very good going forward, not an awful lot to do defensively, but what he did do he did well. With another rwo good games under his belt, Manny will struggle to reclaim his place and troy may have found his niche in the squad.

DISCO TROY.
He was exceptional in that spot and now we have quality wing backs on either side
Lochy's nutmeg was so casual and wicked.

uhh...what doubters?

Haven't really seen anyone bag Hearfield except for his brain explosion against Sydney last season. He isn't a right fullback - maybe a winger, but he's a natural attacking midfielder.

Melbourne are allergic to wing play so it's always easy defending down there, hence why Lochy and Hearfield were our best players. (they were allowed to get forward)

Disco Troy for me!
Had a great game..made Melbourne crap their pants when going forward and did well in covering at the back. Let's not forget that RB isn't his favourite position..and that time he saved that goal was fantastic. If he keeps it up for the next 2 games I reckon Manny is gonna have a hard time getting back into the team...

not OTT at all aye ? he's farken brilliant the way he sprints to the sideline then turn back around and pass to Dura............

i'll admit he was good last night but he needs to have the confidence to take players on and whip in crosses more often, because when he does it, it looks really good.

Lochhead = poor final ball too often.

Hearfield for me though only his first half performance. Lochhead wasn't actually too bad although as mentioned his final ball is still lacking. Paston has a "return from injury" type of game. But Hearfields pace and skill was incredible.

as in another thread - the desTroyer, he was immense

i think he looks a lot more confident now, and far less prone these days (i hope) to errors of judgement as tiredness becomes a factor later in the game

i wonder if he should have been on the back post though for that corner

Lochead deserves player of the season. Sorry Ifill, but you never really stood a chance against such a world class player

Allegedly

Gareth Southgate would still be in charge at Middlesbrough if only he had signed Lochhead. Steve-O2009-12-05 14:43:03

What was Hearfields brain-snap against Sydney?

Troy got my man of the match.  Played well all game.  Better in the first half, for sure, but he was still quality in the second.  If he keeps it up and Muscat is stuck on the bench then at least if Troy gets injured we'll have decent cover in RB.  Not too often we've been able to say that.

Troy has got all the attributes of a modern RB. He has the speed and is a good athelete. OK it is early days but the guy is young. He will learn the defensive stuff....that will come with time. But a RB who can attack like that opens up a whole new area of the game for the phoenix.
Lockhead does the overlap quite well but often crosses from 30 metres ou.tTroy has the speed and ability to beat players on the outside and cross from the by line, which is much more dangerous.. Sorry Manny...but eventually your lack of pace has caught you out.

I think it's still possible to swap if you've not played a full international these days.

Let's see how Hearfield's performing after another 3 or 4 games before we get too excited. It's all about consistency when you are playing at the back and for me Manny has shown that important attribute in spades, with very few sub par performances in his whole time at the Phoenix.

Having said that it's great to see Hearfield seizing his opportunity tonight. There has clearly been a lot of grooming going on behind the scenes to get him ready for the role and he responded with a lot of enthusiasm and confidence. Really enjoyed seeing the Nix switch the ball from wing to wing to take advantage of his and Lochhead's pace, something we don't normally see.

too revved up, got sent off

as Stoppy says, a bit of work seems to have been done and we (and Troy) are starting to reap the benfits

the lad is adding a bit of nouse to his undoubted pace and ball skills

Hearfield is not a right back and will be shown up against Sydney who actually try and play down the wings every now and then

However he is a good, promising attacking midfielder and should be judged as such
