New International Break - Bertos and Mulligan in?

With the announcement today of an International Break in the A-League calendar, what are your thoughts on getting Bertos in from Perth and trying to get Mulligan in as our Marquee signing for next season?
It would give us a strong Kiwi contingent and also help the All Whites by having a bunch of them play together week in, week out.

great idea. do u reckon there would be any chance of getting mulligan under the salary cap tho?
ivan vicelich would b a great marquee player.

Well the idea would be that we'd drop Ulrich and replace him with Mulligan as the Marquee player (and therefore outside the salary cap for the team).

Before this news I would have thought Ricki wouldn't have been keen on signing anymore Kiwi International's because of the problem of them all going away at once, but this solves that.

As for Ivan, I'm not convinced at this point, but I haven't seen him play in a while.

Mulligan is a great taker of free kicks/set pieces from what i've seen but so many of his passes went astray v Vanuatu. Not really worth Marquee status in my mind..

nah Mully isnt a marquee, we should be able to get him under the cap if wewant him, as valeo said hes pretty much a free kick taker, altho hopefully his ground play would improve...

Vicelich would be the best in terms of marquee i would think, he would be an amazing asset in defence
imagine playing a back 3 of Dodd    Vicelich       Sigmund(if we get him, international break means YES!) and rees as cover.. brutal

Im 100% with getting Bertos in the squad.

Now with this break, its going to help us out a fair bit. No AW's out.

Good point. You would think they'd have to raise the salary cap if the number of players in the team rose.

If you play him at RB he'd pi$$ in, but not as a marquee

At last some common sense shown by the FFA over this issue. Good news for the Phoenix. Well done.

I also think we have to be a bit careful tlking vicelich up. Apart from against second rate Island teams who has seen him play recently? He's playing in the Dutch 2nd division where Zenon Caravella, of NZ Knights fame was last spotted. He's also getting on. I'd be pretty disappointed if he turned up as our marquee player, who's to say he's any better than Dodd?

the marquee player doesnt have 2 b the best in the squad. elrich is a great example of that.
but vicelich would cost a bit considering he had been playing in the top dutch league last season.

if our defence was

-------------Moss-------------
--Dodd---Vicelich---Sigmund--

that would be awesome!!

bertos and smeltz up front would be great aswell.

My only issue with so many Kiwi's in the Phoenix is they are taking all of the talent that the Christchurch based A-league team needs.

I think Bertos could make a good investment. Chances are, he'd start scoring for us. being home and happy........

more kiwi lads would be great under as long as the aussies didn't pull the plug on international breaks as soon as their quals series was sorted if the Aws were still playing (i.e - if they go thorough or crash out without playing off with us)

also, on another thread perhaps, some one suggested that the Nix recruit as many AWs as possible; I think having a balance of NZ eligible and other players would be best in terms of the club's image both here and in Aus (and possibly also in terms of performance and variety of styles/skills on display) performance)

But we dont want to be known as an All Whites selection rather than the phoenix either upon reflection. Lonegunmen2007-12-12 21:40:23

I agree with you Lonegunmen, too many All Whites, and it would be like the NZ National Team in the A-League rather than the Wellington Phoenix!

the Phoenix side is already stronger than our allwhites, you dont what to weaken the nix for the sake of getting more allwhites playing together. For a professional club its about getting the best players available for their position, most of the allwhites dont cut it yet
Though i do agree that bertos, sigmund and vicelich would add sum thing to the squad

Do U Think We Are Better In Defence Beacause Of Rees Or Our New Formation. Because If We Have Mulligan In And We Play Him Right Back We Wont Have Our Midfield Unless We Have 1 Striker Which We Know We Dont Want.

Christchurch? Well, better get a hurry-up.

News today suggests the A- League is about to expand to 10 sides with a couple of Queensland teams! Great. Just what we need!!

Where's that Auckland bid? Anyone for...

Sloth, I agree with you!  I don't think the All Whites side would cut it in the A-League, even with Ryan Nelsen as their marquee player.  Ricki is trying to play 'real' football, just like the other A-League sides are, and there aren't currently enough Kiwi lads (either overseas or domestically)with the skills and pace to be competitive at the A-League level (which is going to getter stronger and better each season).  In the medium term, the Phoenix will need to rely on Australians and imports for the bulk or core of the team to have any chance of being competitive. Also, I think for next season the club will need to recruit 5 or 6 players that are a good notch above some of the current players if we are going to be competitive.  I know the defence was suspect earlier on in the season, but I think our biggest problem now is up front when we're trying to do things in the final third of the pitch.  We seem to lack the pace and clinical finishing required at this level with the current squad (even against Perth last week, the score should have been double, particularly against nine men, although the win was very welcomed).  Also the decision making often seems to be too slow and it's amazing how many times we lose the ball in the midfield and up front because players are waiting for the ball to arrive at their feet rather than going to meet it.  The club will need to think really hard about the squad for next season and I don't think there will be a higher proportion of Kiwis in it, if we are going to be competitive. The best news for Kiwi football is that the club is looking to get a team into the youth/reserve A-League.  Whatever the costs we need to do this starting in 2008 and NZ Football needs to come to the party if it is going to develop the game to a level where we are producing good pro players.  This is a better current long-term investment for the game and needs to be prioritised ahead of even the All Whites.

Mulligan wont demand marquee money. He is out of favour at Sc**thorpe and could even be released at the end of the year and we could get him on the cheap. Bertos is great at running to the bi-line and crossing but is terrible in front of goal, but with crosses like his he can shoot however he wants. Bertos instead of elrich is a big call tho as Elrich is still not back to his prime, although he has been bitterly disappointing, dnt get y he doesnt run the ball!!

Soccerbase has him down as a defender:

So do Sc**thorpe:
(obviously you'll have to remove the ** and replace it with un to make that link work... stupid censors)

According to the profile, he has sometimes played midfield for Sc**thorpe, but he is primarily a defender. We lack depth upfront and in defence, so bring him in if he wants to come. Whilst I'd love to see Bertos for the Nix, we need to fix those other areas first.
