Brazilian Felipe de Souza Campos and Australians Royce Brownlie and Karl Dodd have signed for the Phoenix.

Campos will join on a nine-month contract with the option of another year after his contract with Hajduk Split ends on June 30 while Brownlie & Dodd (striker and defender) have penned two-year deals.

The Wellington Phoenix now have enough players for a matchday squad, after announcing three more signings last night.

Brazilian attacking midfielder Felipe de Souza Campos and Australians Royce Brownlie and Karl Dodd bring the total number to 16.

The announcement follows the capture of former All Whites and Newcastle Jets striker Vaughan Coveny, who signed on Friday.

Campos is the second Brazilian so far recruited by Ricki Herbert, following the signing of Daniel Lins Cortes, and much is expected of the 25-year-old. He's already been compared to Fred, who made such an impact with Melbourne last season, and is likely to play in the hole behind the strikers.

"He's going to be great for us and should be a considerable talent in the A-League," Herbert enthused.

Campos is currently contracted to Croatian club Hajduk Split until the end of the month but has signed a pre-contract agreement to join for nine months with the option of another year.

Brownlie joins from Swindon Town, recently promoted from England's League Two, but he played for Queensland in the A-League's inaugural season. The 27-year-old target man has signed for two years.

Dodd has also signed a two-year deal and played with Brownlie at Queensland in 2005-06.

The uncompromising 26-year-old central defender has most recently been playing for Scottish Premier League outfit Falkirk, where he made 11 top-flight appearances. He could also be used as a sweeper in a three-man defence.

Recruitment will take something of a back seat for Herbert in the next fortnight as he takes charge of the All Whites for their internationals against Wales (May 27) and Ukraine (June 7).

All White Jeremy Christie could well be signed before the team departs on Tuesday but it now appears unlikely skilful wide player Leo Bertos will join.

Bertos is rated highly by Perth Glory and, even though he counts as one of their four foreigners, they are keen to retain the midfielder.

Jeremy Brockie is likely to join the Phoenix as an under-20 player.

Herbert is still looking for a striker, central defender and fullback and said he might trial a number of players.

"With most of the squad in place, now it's about taking our time to get the right players," he said.

factfile - Royce Brownile

Royce Brownlie was born in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales and began his football career at the Queensland Academy of Sport, representing them in the National Youth League in the 199697 and 199798 seasons. Brownlie scored a hat-trick in QAS's 4-1 win over UTS Olympic in round seven of 199697,[1] and several goals in the following season to earn his call-up to the Brisbane Strikers senior team for the end of the 199798 National Soccer League season. Brownlie made five appearances for the Strikers in 199798,[2] but none the following season, and so moved to the Brisbane Premier League to play for the Brisbane Lions. The 2000 BPL season was a large success for Brownlie, as he scored 12 goals in just 11 appearances for the Lions, as well as making his representative debut and scoring a goal for Queensland against his home state in September.[3]

Brownlie then signed with Marconi Stallions for 200001, scoring 6 goals in 24 appearances in his first season with the Sydney club. He made his true breakthrough the following season though, breaking an NSL scoring record by notching up 8 goals in a series of 4 matches, and ending the 200102 season with 11 goals from his 15 appearances. His success earned him an invitation to trial with English club Sheffield Wednesday, and whilst on the verge of a contract offer, he broke his cheekbone and missed the opportunity. Upon recovery, Brownlie remained in England to trial with Brentford, Portsmouth, Oldham Athletic and Swindon Town throughout August 2002, and despite scoring a goal for Swindon in a friendly against Spanish side Sporting de Gijn after just 86 seconds,[4] he returned to Australia without a contract.

After training with Perth Glory in the lead-up to the 200203 season, Brownlie eventually signed for Parramatta Power when contract negotiations with Perth broke down. Despite Parramatta finishing third,[5] Brownlie had a disappointing season personally. He was in the starting line-up just four times, and scored once in Parramatta's 2-0 win over his old club Brisbane in round 8.[6] This prompted Brownlie to return to the Strikers for the 200304 season, but he was hampered by injuries which forced him to undergo surgery on his knee, and he scored just three times in 21 appearances.[7]

In February 2005, Brownlie was announced as one of the first eleven signings at new club Queensland Roar,[8]. He began playing for them in the annual Silver Boot competition, scoring a hat-trick against Pine Rivers in an early 7-1 victory,[9] and the equaliser in the final against Rochedale Rovers.[10] Brownlie's scoring form continued in the North Queensland Challenge Cup, scoring in Queensland's 2-1 win over the Central Coast Mariners in Townsville.[11] Despite suffering a rib injury in a 5-0 Pre-season Cup win over New Zealand,[12] Brownlie recovered in time for Queensland's 200506 A-League season opener.[13] Dropped in favour of Reece Tollenaere,[14] Brownlie missed the following two rounds, and after earning a call-up into the starting line-up against Sydney FC, was struck by three onsets of a virus within a month, which also affected other members of the Queensland squad.[15] Brownlie returned to the first team in round 8, and scored against Adelaide United the following week,[16] but was hit by virus again and forced out of the squad.[17] Following a further short absence, a suspension to fellow striker Michael Baird saw Brownlie return to the team against New Zealand,[18] and he picked up his second league goal of the season.[19]

The introduction of Brazilian striker Reinaldo to the Roar in early 2006,[20] however, again forced Brownlie out of the squad and he played just twice more before the end of the season. Citing his proneness to injury and illness,[21] Queensland declined to offer a contract extension, but gave him the opportunity to prove himself during their Tongyeong Cup campaign in South Korea.[22] Still with no offer forthcoming and permission to negotiate with other clubs,[21], Brownlie headed to England again in July 2006.

Four years after his first attempt, Brownlie trialled with Swindon Town again, and this time scored five goals in his first two trial matches for the Robins.[23][24] On July 27, 2006 he signed for Swindon Town for their 200607 season in the English League Two.[25] He scored his first league goal for the club on his debut, with a last-minute goal against Barnet to seal a 2-1 victory.[26] Brownlie earned a red card in Swindon Town's Carling Cup match against Brentford, and since his mandatory one-match suspension, has been deployed as a wide right midfielder by Paul Sturrock.

Brownlie was released by Swindon on May 9, 2007 after an unsuccessful loan period at Chester City

I'm excited about the signings of Campos and Dodd. But Brownlie has a pretty crap goal-scoring record. Hopefully Ricki will sign a third Brazilian as a striker, someone with a proven goal scoring record.

Brownlie has an excellent goal scoring record against the North Shore Shambles.  Scored a hat trick in a matter of minutes in a pre-season match (that allegedly cost the Knights a major sponsorship deal).

That clogs side was universally dreadful in front of goal so itmay just have been they were cursed.

I hope Dodd gaining experience for Falkirk in the SPL will give him that extra boost over other defenders in the A League, but does anyone else thinking going from playing 11 games in SPL to an NZ A League franchise is a big step down??

Campos will have to wait and see as he never got on the park for Split but that does not mean he is no good lets just see how he goes in pre season.

Lastly on Brownlie I admit his goal scoring record per games is very poor but from what I remember from him he was very good at holding the ball up for others which is what we need.
Imagine him holding up for a young Costa coming on in the last 15 mins when opposition defenders are tired and him racing through on goal.
Give Brownlie a chance before writing him off.

That business was very lucky to be able to see what was in line for the season before signing off a sponsorship deal haha.

I talked to my friend who follows Hajduk Split and he said that Campos struggled to stand out in there reserve team.

Yeah sound like good safe signings. So far so good. Like to see them in action asap.

Quite good signings, but the Phoenix still need 1 or 2 big names.

Think Campos and Dodd are good signings. Campos has had good experience throughout different places in Europe not just Brazillian leagues like a few other Brazillians imported to the A-League. Dodd looks to be a good signing, Falkirk are a reasonable club so I guess he will really strengthen our defensive unit.

Brownlie is interesting. His records in England have been OK and he obviously has talent. Will get a go during the pre season I hope he impresses.

Oh and please John Tambouras next.

If Brownie stays fit he could be an asset as he will bring in quick players like cova and barb... into play along with the actacking midfielders.

If he can stay fit.

Every signing is great because most are better than the players that were getting signed for the North Shore Shambles.

Brownlie & Dodd played A-League in version 1, So you must be one of these supporters who just started to like the Victory when they started winning (version 2).

Arent they all like that? Bangwagoners. Im pleased we got Dodd from Falkirk, not too sure on the others. Ill reserve my judgement 'til I see them play

I confess my heart sank a little when I saw Brownlie's recent goal conversion rate - four goals in 25 appearances over two years ... ?  Looks like his last really good year was 01-02, and at a lower level than A-league.

football tragic for too long

I guess it all depends on how much money is left in the pot for players. It might be that we've already signed our marquee player(s) and what we get from now on are the dribs and drabs as the pot of gold may be emptying out. Like Antz, the signing of Brownlie isn't a stunning one in my book but hey, he hasn't played for the side yet so he's got to have the opportunity to prove himself.
I'd be quite happy to see the Nix sign a very good striker cos we gonna need one.

Maybe you just need to take your head outta your ass once in a while to check what is going on around you. For an Australian fan not to know about players in your own competition makes me wonder just what sort of fan you really are. You'll find there are many knowledgeable fans here in NZ that know more about your own league and the players than you do.

Personally I though Brownlie was ok at Queensland. He did struggle to score though which was very typical of Queensland at the time. He would be a decent backup, just hope he isn't a first XI for your sakes.

The standard in Croatian league HNL. 1 is quite a bit higher than the A-League, also taking into account Campos comes from one of the big two HNL. 1 clubs.

Maybe they suck. Brownlie might just well be that. Dodd is solid and with experience now in two leagues of Europe he will come back a better player.

Dodd and Brownlie are decent signings..as for Campos..got to wait and see what he can do, sometimes you can't really tell if  a player will be good or not on their past preformances..who knows maybe he will come in and run riot against the A-league sides.
