With all due respect to Riki..... the two keepers the Nix have...are both dredful.. I have seen first hand some shocking Goalkeeping from both these guys....while at the Kingz and Kinghts...and Napier City Rovers.
There is better in NZ then these two....and it would have better to get a top Pro from Overseas for the first season.

Will watch with interest.

Moss even looks scared!!....Mummmy!!!!

I think the two goalkeepers the Phoenix ave are good enough for now and why would we waste money on getting a keeper...We don't want to waste our money or imports spaces on bloody keepers...Who goes to a game to watch a keeper?...well maybe his family.

just means we got to be scoring up the other end if we're going to be leaking them at the back

I thought that towards the end of last season with an organised defence in front of him Paston looked ok. Moss also had a blinder v Brazil and is still young. Not convinced it's good for one of NZ's best 2 keepers to be back up for the other at club level.
Spoonly is a good idea - personally if I was Ricki I'd use my contacts to get Mossy a gig as a number 1 somewhere in Asia and sign someone like Banners as No2.

Thoughts?

Paston is a top notch goalie havent seen enough of Moss.

Both have their weaknesses. Paston is liable to stupid mistakes and lapses of concentration. I liked Moss in him 1st season at the Knights. I think they are both more than good enough for this league

Both average at best.... but i do hope they prove me wrong.

Who is better??.....
Phil Imray - Manawatu
Adam Highfield - canterbury
Jon Busch - Former Columbus Crew now at Chicago Fire, Also USA Caps

and i got more if you need him...

All i will say, is that it looks like you have to be Rikis mate to be in the team...unless your name is Noah Hickey

Paston and Moss are both darn good keepers. Although I'm not convinced its a wise idea to have NZ'z best two keepers in one team when one wont get as much game time. As a 3rd keeper we should get Oliver Kahn, he was good at the world cup (5 years ago), and he wouldnt be too expensive considering he is about 37 or 38.

Kahn? When we can bring up a quality U20 keeper in Spoonley whos good enough and will take little wages? 'Avin a laugh

Yeah, for the third goalkeeper if we need one..just one of the decent local boys would do..no need to look out of the country.

paston is a liability. completely overrated when he had his "blinders" last season (i mean, saving the ball by having it smashed into your face, and the commentator bleets on about "a great reflex save!" come on!), and he doesn't have the concentration, consistency, or dominance of the area that a good keeper requires. and his reflexes have always been a bit suspect.

moss has certainly got some natural talent, but physically he just doesn't appear like he'll ever quite make it. i'd still like to hope that at the very least he gets a chance to prove himself to be better than "pastel" paston.

as for other kiwi keepers, can't say i have too many suggestions. utting and nicholson both proved without a doubt in the nzfc final how woefully short of the mark they are. and i haven't seen enough of the other keepers around the country to comment. in otago we seem to have more of a dearth than ever as far as keepers are concerned. even spoonley was extremely unimpressive when he was down this way, although he was very young.

there have been dozens of aussie keepers who have plyed their trade over in europe in recent years. i'm wondering if we could've got a "journeyman" aussie keeper to get us through the first season. hopefully it's not something we regret later.

I sincerely hope that that's an attempt at humour...

Paston is an good keeper, not to sure on Glen Moss though? Has Moss proved himself at a decent level yet? there are plenty of good Goalkeepers offshore to name one Luke Naughton former Under 20's Keeper currently playing in England, the best reflex keeper Iv'e seen, very good presence in the box, owns it pretty much, also organises very well.

How about Danny Milosevic ?  That worked really well for the Knights...

hehe, when i used the word "journeyman" i didn't quite mean it to THAT extreme

Milosevic was already a walking disaster before he joined the knights, and he had barely played a match between the sticks for about 8 years. he was always going to be an extreme gamble. as we all discovered he never had it in him to handle the pressure of being a first choice keeper.

i was suggesting more along the lines of sasa ilic, jason kearton, or joey didiluca (altho i heard hes been in trouble lately...)

how about this for a suggestion... MARK BOSNICH!

Dont joke, a keeper can change a season, eg, Cech for Chelsea. I mean were not going to get a Petr Cech, but anything surley is better than what we have right now...

These keppers keep us in games, we want a kepper that wins us some.

If we build a solid defense around the keepers, I believe they will preform...Sometimes you just got to ave faith in people.

Bosnich is in Portugal playing for Snorting Lisbon.

I'm not at all in favour of the tow Aw's keepers being at the same club, as I have already said, but that's what's happened so we'll just have to live with it. Third keeper? Sign someone local short term when and if the need arises. I'd probably go for Bannatyne. Always liked him, he has the size that so many NZ keepers seem to lack (Moss, Nicholson (height, not girth), Batty, all the way back to Johnny "4ft6" Morris and Kevin "Not Much Bigger" Curtin).

Danny Milosevic? I admire your sense of humour hard news. I didn't see him in season 1 but in season 2 he was nothing special.

With the two keepers named going to be off on International duty together, you need another keeper good enough to fill in while they're away, but not so good that they BOTH sit on the sideline for the rest of the season. Sticky situation.

i rekon turnbull from the knights last year should be signed there would be some great competition between the keepersd then and they would thenhave to pull out something special to be in the starting line up for the next games competiton for spots is the best way to get the best out of your players.

I shouldn't have to do this lads, but rest assured, my Milosevic lines were for comedy value...

Rumour is they are changing the short term rules so now you have a 23 man squad you can only sign a short term loan if you get below the 15 men needed for a match.

But three keepers on goodish wages is too much of the salary cap...

no way. Hes the fattest dude out. I rather Bannatyne then him or even Utting. Jst scout Australia for talent. Especially theyr under 23 players who havent picked up contracts will surely want to get recognised through the a league whether they play for us or an austrlian side i dont think they will care.

Yeah buy Pavlos, if it was the case of just going and grabbing any old keeper, than why stray from the ones we got, if were going to look for an improvment why not look for players who have a little bit more experiance,

Have to agree with you there.
How ever, Considering that both Utting and Nicholson were injuried for the NZFC final, they did quiet well....not that i am defending them both for acts of stupidty in the final.

Also agree that maybe other NZFC Keepers aren't up for the A-:eague,...but there has to be a better keeper in Aussie than these two "muppets" they have signed.!
