I see the job of Phoenix assistant coach has been advertised. Its on www.seek.co.nz.

Great to see that this is finally getting off the ground. Interesting though that the close off date is 31 January. 20 days is quite a short period.

So now we can get down to speculating who might get the job. There seems to be a feeling that Greenie is a shoe in. I for one would be very very disappointed if this was the case. Nice guy and all that but if this club has aspirations of becoming of becoming A-League heavy hitters then we can do better than that.

I would hope that this job would attract attention from some high calibre people. Rickie needs some one can offer a strong second opinion on issues like recruiting/selecting/ tactics etc. I would hope that some of the local coaches like Emblem and Tribulietx apply. Also some of the guys who have been coaching at NZ youth level.

There is an opportunity here to appoint someone who can be an apprentice under Rickie for a season or two and then take over as head coach....we need to get this 100% right!

Greenacre is already an assistant coach.  THis role is for a second one like the previous Gould and Trani setup.

Except Gould was GK coach which I thought we were after as well?

So what, would we have RH, Greenacre, another assistant, and a goalkeeper coach?

Guess it depends of what greenacre does next year

Could you just clarify what you meant by this?. Surely this position advertised is for the official Assistant Coach. I was under the impression Greenie stepped in as a temporary assistant player/coach role after Trani left and this was just to help out until the club got around to hiring a proper full time assistant. Surely we are not going to have two assistant coaches next season?(not counting the GK coach)

If we are going to have a Reserve/Youth team next year, one imagines there will be a lot of interaction between them and the first team coaching staff. I can definately see the need for at least 3 coaches

More than one assistant coach plus a specialist goalkeeping coach is quite common.

For instance, did you know that Jim Magilton has brought his own man out from Ireland with him, in addition to Kevin Muscat?

Sounds like potential for another Victory train-wreck? Here's hoping!

Why not?  We had Trani and Gould for two seasons and it worked well.

So you are saying next season we are having Greenie as an assistant coach, plus a second assistant coach(the one being advertised) plus a GK coach.

Is this a fact?

When they appointed Greenie as assistant I'm pretty sure they stated that they were looking to appoint another assistant who may or may not cover Goalkeeper.

Gould was the goal keeping coach. Who was the guy that took the u-17s? He came accross as quite impressive with what he said and the way the team went about trying to play. If we get a reserve team up and running I think he would be a good fit.rjmiller2012-01-11 14:23:08

Pretty sure it was Gould who took the "reserve / Junior" side in the ASB Challenge

I think thats a good solid idea.
Ricki is the top dog and allows him two years to transition the assistant (if that is the pathway)
It gives the first assistant (which I assume would be the advertised job) hands on with the top squad and RH right hand man, the development team (if it gets up and running) and a pathway through to the top job
The second assistant (Greenacre) can still be the link between 'the boys and the gaffer' as well as not be overloaded and allow to still play, transitioning to the first assistant role as playing time decreases and the first assistant gets promoted (assuming that is the pathway)
A GK coach, whether that Oates as a fulltime or parttime (Isn't he a teacher?) but if you have an academy, you would probably have a total of 4-5 so would need to be a FT role.

If you think broad term of an A squad of 20 players with say 15 academy players, you easily get a team of 15 for the A League on match day, 16 for what ever competition is the academy team on match day and 4 who don't play but have to work hard to get into it. 4 coaches does not sound that far fetched across 35 players....

Yeah Gould did run the reserve team on match day although his main role was as the goal keeping coach. I was talking about the nz u-17 coach who took over at the last minute.

Any other names?

Does anyone think Emblem or Tribulietix would bother applying or any other of the Premiership coaches?

Full time job in the A-League with the possibility of head coach job one day. Not too many jobs like that in NZ.

Would Chris Milicich have a crack at it? You'd have to do the usual NZ suspects, McFarlane, Emblen, Milicich, Ramon....

I don't really want Chris Milicich. You may say he is pragmatic but I don't think I have ever seen more negative tactics than what he comes up with.

Afterthe U20 selections?  THink he might have burnt a few bridges with the whole Chettleburgh thing among others.

Just a name I through out there. I had heard that Chettleburgh was a relatively poisoned character (the team physio told me this) and thats why Mili didn't pick him. You are right about the team tactics though rjmiller. I had forgotten that

Need it be someone with national experience? Keith Braithwaite seems to have done a decent job with Canterbury United in terms of results.

Couldn't tell you what he's like as a person though.

I don't know him but how would he go as a second fiddle? I understand he has been the top dog his whole career so how would that sit. Apparently he gets quite animated and loopy on the sidelines ala Gouldie when he was at HBU but Gouldie calmed it down at the Nix. could be a good call. He turned it around down there after Monsef and Halligan.

The amount of times this loopy would've been suspended in the Mainland League had he not been Canterbury United coach is crazy..

No Kiwis. If we get Kiwis Brown and Bertos stay in the team longer.

Two things.

1, An assistant won't make that call, Ricki will.
2. Why would a kiwi other than Ricki necessarily be loyal to them?

Why? So they shouldn't be getting the ad out to as many people as possible? If vacancies for neurosurgeons can appear on Seek, I don't see why an Asst Coach gig at a football team can't. I'm sure it'll appear in the print media as well.

Where would you have put it? Capital Football's website?

Would have thought Ricki might have names of some people he'd like to approach rather than the position being advertised at all.

Why can't Greenie still play for the 1st team? "Sorry Greenie you were a lock starting and playing every game for us in 11/12 but 12/13 we can't find a spot for you?" That would be quite a swing.

Not sure we would want to waste an import slot on someone who turns 35 this year. Especially with only 4 slots and Sanchez and Ifill will take 2 of these. If you keep Greenie on as a player that leaves only 1 slot. Greenie is not getting any quicker...IMO his imput has gone down from the start of this season. Time to move him on to coaching.

Not this week. Looking for Surgical Registrars in General Surgery and Orthopaedics though.
