Surely, this is not the case for Nix games? How is the attendance tallied?

The nix figures seem to be about right.
The lions were ridiculous, you'd look at the crowd and go "no way". You could count tge crowd yourself sometimes, yet 10k would come up as attendance.

according to their methodology if you ad 'Nix season ticket holders + long term stadium members you would get at least 6,100 turning up every game - not including walk up and corporate tickets.
Since the 'Nix have had lower crowds I would assume it is taken directly from the gate.

It's calculated by totalling the combined crowds from the previous ASBP season then taking 95% of this and adding in all the season pass holders (as we're just plastics anyway), the ball boys/flag bearers and St John's ambulance staff.

Won't be the case next year. Newly hired attendance recorder Dave Cross will be instituting a "Melbourne Victory + 1" calculation formula for the 2011-12 season.

Not suprised that they only sold 500 gate tickets at some games. At least two rounds were in severe wind/rain storms. At one, I recall pretty much everyone sat in the top row, as literally the only way to stay dry.
Of course, when the weather was better, attendances were still fairly poor.

Each block between the entry ports holds approx 1000 people you can quickly see the spectator numbers for Nix games calculates about right.
Went to Hurricanes/Chiefs game and the bulk of sales were walk up spectators - 20 minutes to get a ticket. The crowd looked well less than the announced number. But most spectators for rugby games stay inside and watch TV.

As opposed to a Phoenix game, where being physically at the game is far superior to watching it on tele.

No, but you're breaking forum rules and pissing me off.
Neither conducive to retaining a presence on these forums.
There is a difference between an unessecary bump and ensuing that the same ground is not re-litigated by keeping all relevant posts in the same topic. I'd rather a bump from ayear ago than twenty new threads a day saying 'we shd hv kept K0sta coz he rox'.

Not really, was definately front page of the Dominion Post. If they think thats a funny April 1 joke they really dont appreciate their readership. Dominion Post - another "Fail" ??
If in fact they are true figures which looking at attendances when I have been there, some are pretty piss poor, then it doesn't say much about their product. Mind you, the Nix should sit back either and work to getting back those first season attendances.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I think sometimes the media quote an attendance figure and sometimes a ticket sold figure. Which are always two different figures.

Could raise the average of empty seats in a stadium.

I really do hope you're joking. Eden Park is an arsehole of a ground at which to watch anything, apart from rugby.
The only reason it doesn't matter for rugby is that you don't actually have to be vaguely close to the action as it mostly involves loads of fat guys lying on top of the ball or a non fat guy hoofing it out of the park. Therefore, the need for binoculars, is removed for rugby matches.
f**king Eden Park. Don't get me started.
Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

20,000 out of a 60k stadium is greater then 10k out of a 35k stadium ;)

Cleary you aren't math teacher either. That would be 40,000 empty seats compared to 25,000.
And anyway you are assuming there would be 20,000 aucklanders willing to go.

I reckon just give them one game to shut them up, and when 500 spectators attend we'll never have to consider dorkland again.

Ironically supporting an Australian team
Allegedly

It is clear from history that aucklanders will not support a team week in week out.
They will however go for a once off and for the occasion. I wouldn't also underestimate the support for the Phoenix in Auckland. If hamilton can get 9k to a preseason game and Christchurch 20k to a real game, Auckland can at least match that and likely better it - if the game is held at Eden park. Coupled with sales of shirts etc etc it is market the phoenix should not ignore in our current financial state. Also it is unlikely christchurch can hold a game in the near future
I suggest Terry gets in fast before an ausi team in fact makes it it's home game

We dont hate Hamilton as much as Auckland, thats why the travelling hordes went there & boosted the crowd!

What exactly do you base this on. The AW/honduras crowd got 18K at NHS, and I suggest that has much more pulling power than a nix game.
You have also got to factor in the cost of hiring Eden park to have it a third full.

In all fairness, there were a few Aucklanders at the Hamilton match...
...but I'd imagine that largely, the only Auckland fans who'd show up to a Nix match in their city are the kind who'd also attend were it held in Hamilton. The general punter from Auckland wouldn't bother.
If we continue the trend of taking at least one regular season match to another city, it has to go to Hamilton. They proved they deserve it after such a fantastic turnout against Brisbane, and Christchurch is sadly not yet an option. Taking a regular season match away from Wellington is a significant risk, and only two cities have demonstrated justification - Christchurch and Hamilton.
I'm all for giving Auckland a chance, but they need to prove interest first. That has to start with a successful turn-out at a pre-season or exhibition match (I'd love to see a Nix v. Oceania XI pre-season match up there). And it mustn't be held at Eden Park.
TL;DR version: Hamilton > Auckland, and crawl before you walk.
