Nix in the W-League

I've been thinking about this for a while, are there enough Kiwi women of a good enough standard that would be willing to represent NZ in the W-League through the Phoenix? I know there are a few New Zealanders in the league currently, but could we field a team ourselves???

Most would probably argue that getting a Youth Team is a more presing issue, but once that is out of the way, should the Nix pursue it??

Can't see why not after we sort the right club fundings. If we do, I think that our girls could do relatively better than the men team.

What do you think JR?

Yes, as would the Youth league.  The problem is who pays.  The Aus leagues are hugely finded by the FFA and they won't pay for ours.  NZF can't afford it, so it's left with the burden on the club and I can't see how the numbers would add up.

Cue HappyTed with another inaccurate and ill-informed rant.

It's not a priority for the Phoenix. Getting the senior men's team to be a genuine finals contender on a regular basis is. Getting a youth team directly assists that. Any resources need to be allocated towards that first. Having a women's team, while very important for the development of the women's game, does nothing for the Phoenix.

As for NZF, I think it should be a massive priority should we get the money somehow, and I'd love to see it happen - with or without the Phoenix. Using the Phoenix brand will probably be the easiest way to go, especially if the FFA would rather have a W-Phoenix than a seperate NZ-based team.

That being said, I think a W-League team might be best based out of Auckland, while us Wellingtonians keep the men's team. Less chance of competition between the teams in Wellington, expand the brand in JAFA-ville, have the team closer to the home of the players (most of the Ferns are Auckland-based, right?)...

FT, you didn't happen to watch my older sister's 'football' team play 25 years ago, did you?  It has forever left an indelible impression on me also...

Does nothing for the mens side you mean. Careful with the wording there...itd do wonder for the phoenix and lifting the profile of the club as a whole, and of womans football in the country, has to be a good thing. But yes money, and prioritiesof where that limited money goes, and it must first go to getting the side into the top 4 regularly, and into a youth side. Maybe if finances improve significantly enough (NZF/tonyp/terryS wins powerball?),then maybe some money can be put into it,but dont see that happening until the phoenix is well established.

The real question is, does anyone care?

Harsh....

Sure it never be as well supported as the mens team. But if we get in a position to be able to afford to field a team (which we probably never will, but theoretically..),then why shouldnt we?

Because it will only ever be a drain on the club financially, I can't see how it would ever make money.

It wouldnt. Could raise the profile of the club a bit though, and attract a few more supporters. It IS the sort of thing that is only a drain on finances, but if we end up in a position where we can safely afford it and still have the mens and youth sides be competitive, then i think we should.

This is of course all very hypothetical in my opinion,as we arent likely to be able to afford to have such a drain on finances, without the mens side suffering.

If we want to be taken seriously as a club then I think it is important that if given the opportunity and we can afford a womens team we should take it.
