If the problem was the Sandbar is Lion pub, then cancellation was totally the wrong option.

They should have just admitted a mistake was made, let it go ahead, and not make the mistake again. I doubt DB are going to go bust as the result of such a minor error at a minor event.

It probably shouldnt have been touted as a "Phoenix" event in the first place, but to get all uppity about a few footballers talking in a pub is ridiculous.

Very very bad PR

Yeah, sponsorship deals are overrated anyway.

Besides we're loaded, so it's not as if we need the money.

Paying customers and the support of the local community are far more important.
FFS so a minor mistake was made that wouldnt have affected DB in any way whatsoever, but the solution is to let down your supporters?

I disagree. It is not a minor mistake. DB have invested what would be a reasonable sum and the Phoenix club and players should be doing everything possible to maximise their return on that investment. If that means getting the punters to turn up to a DB pub no matter how many or how few they should.  Take the example of Greg Murphy for instance, Do you ever see him on telly or in the press without wearing sponsors gear.

I agree the cancellation was not a good look and the event should have probably been allowed to g ahead, but they all need to be thinkibng along these lines all the time.

Nail on the head. I asked some questions today, i know Monteiths Paremata management quite well, and what i got was this:

 - Monteiths were actually approached first (yes theyre a DB bar) but they declined as there was a $7000 cost involved, and they already had Ben Hurley booked months in advance which also wasnt cheap. It was bad timing otherwise they possibly wouldve been interested.
 - It was organised by a wealthy well known Tawa based dentist who knows people (probably knows Ricki) and his booze hag whitby soccer mum employee (name withheld), so yeah it wasnt organised through the appropriate channels and the DB sponsorship was an over sight that wasnt taken into consideration.
