Ricki and Leo are having a meet and greet, and general discussion night at the Sandbar on the Mana Esplanade. Thought id post it up if anyone lives out this way

And then afterwards you can head next door to Monteiths and see some Ben Hurley stand up comedy

sounds like it should be good tonight....

The Sandbar Pub will host a Wellington Phoenix Wednesday, with the public getting the chance to ask questions of Ricki Herbert and his team.

The men holding centre stage will be Herbert, striker Leo Bertos and strength and conditioning coach Lee Taylor.

Taylor, whose family is coming over from England soon, has been in New Zealand a few months, staying with mate and Sandbar owner Steve Baker. Taylor plans to buy a house in Whitby.

"I'm doing different programmes with different players [as the new season approaches]. It's been full-on and I'm loving it here at the Phoenix," Taylor says in his broad East End accent.

A former professional player, he has worked as a strength and conditioning coach at Notts County, Liverpool and Bolton, and was eyeing up a move to a Scottish Premier League club before Herbert called.

"I've known Chris Greenacre for 17 years and when Ricki rang me, the decision was made in five or 10 minutes.

"The wife said after I got off the phone, 'Was that about a job?' and I said 'Yep'. When I said we're going to New Zealand she was like, 'But that's two days on a plane'.

"For my family it's a big change but I think we're going to enjoy the lifestyle here."

Baker says the Phoenix night will be a chance for people to hear about the upcoming season and past football experiences of the three guests of honour.

Don't be surprised if other Phoenix players "infiltrate" the audience to ask their own curly questions during the Q & A session, he says.

"It'll be a fun night. I suggested it to Ricki and he was really keen.

"I know it's Rugby World Cup time but I'm confident there'll be a good crowd along."

The evening starts at 7.30pm at the Sandbar.

The $10 entry also gets you a free beer or wine.

The Phoenix kick off their 2011-12 campaign with an away game against Gold Coast United on October 9.

A night of tragicomedy up at Mana then (assuming that BH made it).

But is it really? You don't really want to have the coaching staff and players bombarded with questions they're in no position to answer. Surely in the current circumstances it's best to just knuckle down and wait for all the off-the-field stuff to get sorted out.

That was my initial thought El G, especially given that there would likely be a few Journos 'infiltrating' as well. I guess if Terry is begging the Dom Post not to run stories (if that is indeed true), the hazard of handing them stories on a plate is never going to be entertained.

Terrible PR for the Phoenix this.
They aint gonna sell season tickets this way.
What is there to hide??
If this trio really had stories to 'dis on the Phoenix, they could do it anyway - they dont have to organise a pub conference.
So what the hell is the issue?

Look they are all professionals and would have been able to fend off a few awkward questions. We were Nix fans there to meet the team. PaulT was there as well and we had a chat and I certainly don't think he was there either to put the team on the spot.
For me I was just looking forward to meeting Ricki and having a chat about the football and I was going to ask him how it felt when after the game when he turns to wave at me and I'm not there,(I can't make every game), does it take the shine off things? I suspect it does cos he always waves at me, he has such amazing eyesight.

My second question was who would honestly win a fight between Siggy and Manny in Malta after a day drinking alcopops on the beach?

and thirdly when he turns to Mrs Herbert at night and he turns the light out, in the darkness he mutters "thank f**k he's gone" when talking about ex-players, who does he mean? leilei obviously springs to mind but who else?

tbh I think most of the people there already had season tickets, I was disappointed but can understand the reasons I suppose, there would have been journos there.....

Surely this could have been cancelled before everyone actually turned up?

It is not like this off-field stories are completely new and had just been sprung on them

So it should be.

They could have turned up and meet fans and just not have had the Q & A. At least it wouldnt have been a wasted trip for fans.

Im sure the 3 involved had no choice so Im not blaming them.

To be honest, this is pathetic for a professional club. I would be pretty angry if I went out there to see this. In saying that I'd rather avoid Mana.

I went down to have a look.  Pretty poor really as we watched parents turn up with their kids only to be told it wasn't happening.

Apparently whoever organised it didn't have the authority to do so.  They could have worked that out before it was advertised in the local paper!

Not making me jump to renew my membership either if this is the sort of treatment the fans get.

With my empathy hat on, what brewery are the Sandbar with?

My thoughts too, Sandbar is a Speights Bar (lion) One of Nix Major Sponsors Export33 (DB).

That is probably the main reason, but still very poor form for it to be cancelled at last minute

It kind of makes me wonder if the club had even been aware of the whole thing, sounds as if it was more a deal between a couple of mates rather than a deal done with the club.

This.

There was an 'in the Nix' the other day that I would have thought would have mentioned it, plus the brewery clash...

How's my driving? - Whine here

I personally think sanity provailed here.

Ok, a few people took their kids down to meet some players but what the hell are kids doing anywhere near a pub in Mana on a schoolnight???

Oh wait...

Yep - I looked for it on the website and also the "In the Nix" email and thought it was probably not "official" - although these things have happened before (at least with just Ricki).

Hopefully it hasn't put off Lee Taylor.

Parent-teacher-student interviews? (3-way conferences they're called these days)

If the problem was the Sandbar is Lion pub, then cancellation was totally the wrong option.
They should have just admitted a mistake was made, let it go ahead, and not make the mistake again. I doubt DB are going to go bust as the result of such a minor error at a minor event.

It probably shouldnt have been touted as a "Phoenix" event in the first place, but to get all uppity about a few footballers talking in a pub is ridiculous.

Very very bad PR
