Mariners, Phoenix to play pre-season game in Dubbo

Look at who the mayor is Ya ya

Central Coast Mariners football coach and manager Lawrie McKinna will meet with local officials at Apex Oval today to release details of a pre-season game - with an international flavour - to be played in Dubbo on Saturday, July 25.

Western NSW Football operations and development manager Andrew Fearnley confirmed in The Daily Liberal on May 27 that plans were well advanced to have the Mariners come to Dubbo.

The Mariners Football office yesterday said that Wellington Phoenix from New Zealand would take on the Mariners in a lead-up to their A-League season.

Fearnley and Dubbo Football secretary Jim Auld will host todays meeting which will also be attended by Dubbo City Council mayor Greg Matthews, James McKechnie (council recreation services manager) and Selwyn Dallinger (Dubbo Football president).

Dubbo RSL Club will also be involved in promotion of the game with Gavin Thompson also to attend.

Auld said yesterday that the game would start at 6pm, this would of course allow patrons to complete engagements with junior and senior sport.

He also indicated that there would be a sportsmans dinner at the RSL club on the Friday night.

It is believed that the Mariners would be here in Dubbo from the Thursday to train and be involved in promotional engagements.

Formed in 2004 in readiness for the start of the Australian A-League series in 2006-07, the Mariners won their first premiership on goal difference in 2007-8 but then went down to Newcastle Jets 1-0 in the grand final.

Last season the Mariners finished the home and away season in fourth place before losing successive games to Queensland Roar.

McKinna is the only coach the Mariners have had which speaks volumes for the esteem in which he is held on the Central Coast.

He boasts a record of 30 wins from 69 games.

It is hoped that the Mariners latest signing to a two-year deal, Northampton Town skipper Chris Doig will play in Dubbo.

A former Scotland under-21s representative, Doig made his Premier League debut as a 17-year-old for Nottingham Forest against Manchester United in 1998 and went on to play 93 matches for the club.

The 28-year-old will bring a wealth of experience to the Mariners, after completing 232 competitive matches in Englands top three divisions.

Doigs time at Forest was followed by a brief loan spell at Northampton in 2003, before shifting to the Cobblers for the start of the 2005-2006 season.

There, he played with current Central Coast squad member Pedj Bojic, and racked up 130 competitive appearances for the Cobblers, becoming the clubs captain along the way.

Confirmation that the Mariners are coming to Dubbo will be a huge fillip for soccer here, which is currently enjoying a huge profile in the city.

Fark me! Dubbo is like Palmy without the Students!!! Tourist Attractions include an Ye Olde G**l (It says Jail but it woud appear the name GA0 has been modded lolz!) and the Western Plains Zoo where you can have your car torn apart by animals in "their natural habitat"!!!

They really should go about 100kms down the road to Dunnedoo!

Good to know we are going to go up against another A League side pre season. Surely better too than playing in Queenstown.

The Mariners beat the Fury 4 - 0  last night,  both sides not at full strength, the Fury didnt have Fowler, Krishna played though.

They say Felipe has done a runner (actually he didnt even get there) and is going to reneg on his contract, will be chasing the oil money instead

Dunnedoo! - If anywhere 100Kms down the road in a slightly different direction and have it in my missus' home town of Mudgee. Great wine and location for the 2002 Eric Bana film 'The Nugget'

Only a short drive from Dubbo to Wellington - where you can go an look at the caves, and.... well that's about it.

Don't forget the vintage car swap meet!

They should've just had it in Wellington - then the locals could've got behind their namesake 'nix.

Ha, that's a month away, at the rate we have players popping in and out it's anyones guess who will be playing... and the Mariners aren't much different.

So basically you are calling a game between two completely unknown sides a month before it's played.  Brave.

If anyone is travelling around Dubbo at match time here is some information about tickets on our forum today...

Tickets to A-league game now available
BARRY HILDEBRANDT
22/06/2009

Grandstand tickets go on sale from 10.30am today for the Central Coast Mariners versus Wellington Phoenix A-League trial match to be played at Dubbos Apex Oval on Saturday July 25.

Operations and development manager for Western NSW Football Andrew Fearnley said organisers had been amazed with the response from the public for the match.

I would suggest that because of the overwhelming support shown thus far by the football community in Dubbo and surrounding areas, it is important that those wishing to obtain grandstand tickets do so early, he said.

The point of sale for tickets is the Dubbo RSL Club in Brisbane Street and grandstand tickets will be $20 and can be purchased from Monday at 10.30am in person and from 11.30am via telephone on 6882 4411.

There will also be general admission tickets at $10 for adults and $5 for students and concession.

These tickets will go on sale from Monday, July 6 at 10.30am in person and phone.

The other thing to remember for ticket sales is that they can be purchased between 8.30am and 4pm Monday to Fridays.

On game day the gates will open at 2.45pm for a 6pm kick-off of the main game.

The main preliminary game will feature Western Premier League teams Dubbo Bulls and defending premiers Westside Panthers as well as a host of junior games and activities.

Grandstand Tickets?

I wanna reverse my ute up to the fence, sit in the back on an Esky with 15 mates and drink beer. And when the lights fail we will all turn our utes around and put our headlights on!

Vukovic illness little concern for Mariners

Central Coast Mariners Football Manager Lawrie McKinna says hes not too worried about goalkeeper Danny Vukovics health, ahead of Saturdays pre-season trial against Wellington Phoenix in Dubbo.

Vukovic visited a doctor as a precaution on arrival in the Central Western city, after picking up what has now been diagnosed as a sinus infection.

Prescribed antibiotics and a period of rest, Vukovic remains all but certain to play in the clubs final competitive hitout before the start of the Hyundai A-League season.

"He didnt feel great when he got off the bus, and its got worse, so young Nathan Kenyon, the young goalkeeper from Dubbo who is in our academy is on the bench, and he probably wont sleep well tonight. Hes at training tomorrow, so Im sure deep down hell be hoping Danny turns up.

"We dont want to risk anyone who has niggles or who isnt feeling right, but psychologically you want to win the game. Its the last major game before the A-League starts, and it would be great to have a wee win up here," said McKinna.

With regular deputy Andrew Redmayne on Australian Under 20s duty, Kenyon, and a couple of unlikely candidates were putting their hands up as backup, during a coaching clinic for Dubbo juniors.

"Its between Kwas (Adam Kwasnik) and Hutch (John Hutchinson). Theyre having goalkeeper auditions in case Vuka ends up in the sickbed. This is the last group, the final exam, so well see who wins, but six -year olds are a lot different to the Phoenix," joked captain Alex Wilkinson.

The squad endured a marathon six hour bus trip to Dubbo before immediately hitting the training pitch. Despite this, the squad remains in good spirits.

"We just used it to shake the cobwebs off. Well train a lot more intensively tomorrow, and seeing how the boys go we might have a session at 5oclock as well. That one is out of the way now, well turn up tomorrow, the boys will be well rested tonight, and we look forward to a good session tomorrow," said McKinna.

"A bit sore. Its pre-season and (strength and conditioning coach Andrew) Clarkys been working us fairly hard over the last couple of weeks, and when you incorporate a couple of games in there, the boys are pretty sore. We had a good loosener today then well have another session tomorrow and be ready for the game on Saturday, because its a pretty important game.

"Its the last game well have against A-League opposition, well gave a couple of games amongst ourselves before the Melbourne game.

"Its important for us to have a decent game, and keep the confidence going, were unbeaten, so hopefully we can continue that," Wilkinson said.

The Mariners clash with Wellington Phoenix this Saturday, 25 July at Apex Oval, Dubbo. General Admission tickets are $10 adults and $5 for Child/Concession. Kick-off is at 6pm. Kiwis 1 sheep

Some classics there and very good.

Seeing as we are focused on the beautiful game my rebuttals would be more highbrow such as:

"The famous Central Coasters went to Rome to see the Pope..."

"My old man said be Gold Coast fan, so I said..."

"Miron Bleiberg has a ******* Monkey's heed"

See how sofustikated we are over here?

No idea who said it though.

Going off-topic somewhat but my faves from last season were of Gaffers doing it to their own players:

1. Kinear calling N'Zogbia Insomia

2. Arry saying "my missus could have scored thatl" (@ Darren Bent)
