You can't use someone else actions as a defence of your own Hard News...

"yeah I made some racial slurs, but he said a whole lot more than I did" wouldn't stand up in society nor should that excuse on a footy pitch.

The truth is, by all accounts Durante is a top bloke, but on the field he is a poor role model for young players when talking about respecting referees and their decisions

Captain and coach of a professional team have a responsibility to talk with the ref. As long as it stays tactical. But yeh know what you mean and still think much like News- comparatively he's level headed.

The judgement is of his captaincy not how nice he is.

But it's not racist if you hate everyone equally is it?

I think people are deluding themselves here. Dura carries himself really well on the pitch. He has words with the ref when he thinks a decision is unjustified and let's be honest Refs are often less than kind to us especially with dispensing yellow cards. He can tackle well and hard when he has to but he's certainly not a dirty player. I think he's fulfilled his captain duties very well over the years.

Never said he was dirty, never said he can't tackle well or play out from the back well... but what I did say and I stick to this, is the way he often speaks to the ref is a poor example to young players when we talk about showing respect for officials - no one needs to be a lip reader to know that Durante at times has been very colourful with his language.

Do I understand how it happens, of course I do, does it justify it, not it doesn't.

If we saw a 13 year mouth off like he does at a ref we would be appalled - he should (as all others) be held to a higher standard than what we place on kids.

I rate the new rule being trialed that allows the ref to sin-bin player for 10min for dissent. It happens far to often you see players mouthing off at the ref. It's about time it got dealt with and our kids learned that this kind of behavior is not tolerated at any level.

Side issue, but there was a period when I was playing in Dunedin (around 2003/2004) when they introduced a rule that any swearing was an automatic red to try and improve player behavious.  It was strictly enforced so players were missing a shot, swearing and getting sent off, or swearing at their own player and getting sent. It was brilliantly farcical!

Need to start swearing in a different language

I thought this season Durante was fine on the field, but many other seasons he's been one of the worst in the league for being a big cry baby at referees, constantly. Not sure if it was Taylor or Rudan influence that toned him down. Of course taking to/communicating/complaining to the ref is fine for a captain to be doing, but he was way overboard. Good on him for improving on that front though.

When I was playing we had a ref who warned us before the game, any swearing and you are off. One of our players asked him if he considered "swallow my muck" swearing. He said no.

Be creative.

When he looks around him and isn't despairing and the scoreboard says 8-0 to us I'm sure that helps...

Marinovic looks highly likely to come.

With the starting XI so far probably including Marinovic, Libby, Taylor Fenton, Rufer and Singh, that leaves room for 4 visa spots + 1 domestic player in our starting XI. (hopefully Krishna and/or Williams)

If Dura goes I think it's pretty important we keep Doyle,

Here's some speculation for ya:

Alexander Baumjohann. Was at WSW for a bit and says he has more to offer from the league.* He's an attacking midfielder, and Talay said he was looking for another #10. Not sure how expensive he would be though. Thoughts?

Endorsed by mistake!

Just signed for Helsingor in Denmark.

McCowatt will surely sign with a European club post this WC.

Absolutely.  Saw the first game and we were all over Hondy.  Great control of the game from midfield.

I'd expect the Nix to approach any player individually if they want them to trial. A bulk email is poor form and not a way for the potential recruit to feel like the club actually wants them. Absolutely.

This is not the way Des Cunningham, a gentleman amongst moronic old school bully managers (read Rudan), behaves.  Personal calls to all who trialed for U20 team, regardless of them being in or out.

Maybe Mandi's not actually gone yet...

I got a sponsored Instagram post from Mandi saying thanks and goodbye to NZ. Maybe Welnix have completely forgotten about him, and he’s resorted to sponsored Instagram posts in the hope someone from the club sees it and remembers to resign him!!!

The club owners are so tight they want to leave it as long as possible to sign players, especially those on higher wages.

How the hell can you call them tight given the money they have thrown away on something that still isnt guaranteed a future yet. Shark i hope they dont see how ungrateful some people are for the investment they have made.Without them think we would have been gone along time ago.Yes they have made mistakes  but lets face it who dosnt.

And it doesn't play out with what's happened. They have only 7 players sure, but Taylor is not a cheap player and is one of the seven, Krishna and Williams aren't cheap players yet they have contracts in front of them too.

I'm not looking to bag the ownership too much (you are right; they deserve praise) but it seems like they don't always learn from their mistakes.

The football administration of the club has been weak for years. If they want to go with rookie coaches then having a Director of Football role that leads recruitment, playing style and vision leading is a solid option. Most clubs in the A-League have those or equivalent roles.  The ones who don't e.g. Newcastle have very experienced football management with Ernie and Lawrie McKinna.

The Welnix should have recruited a DoF after Ernie left. I think, even now with the license uncertainty, they should still look to have this role (if they can find someone).

If it goes tits up with Talay, which it very well could, then you have someone able to still guide the football side of things over the long term. If growing Greenie in to a first team coach is what the club want to do then the DoF can guide the clubs footballing resources to that end as well.

Recruitment and retention is also largely moved away from the head coach and the head coach primarily concentrates on getting the best out of the players and on-field results.

I'm not sure the reticence of Welnix to use a DoF or, again, whether Wellington can attract the right people (being a footballing outpost).
