Right now we're doing what a lot of club's fans could only dream of. Couldn't be happier with Uffie's vision for the squad and the type of player he and the board are looking to bring in. A bit more tentative about prospective results this season but I am so, so satisfied with the direction of the Phoenix
Reckon we had the right mix last year - 3 young kiwis starting most games, with a solid base from experienced Aussies/imports. If we tip too far into the youth then we'll just be like CCM a few years back.
We'll need to be extremely patient as results will take a while to come.
Anyway, reading the comments from Sydney fans re: Devlin makes me feel a little better about this signing. Lots of 'fudge.', 'dammit', 'why couldn't he stay' etc
I really like the quotes from Devlin. Sounds like he genuinely wants to be here and work hard to earn his place.

He'll fit in here then
The news of the independent A-League could not have come at a better time. That means Talay is now justified to build a younger team, plus some experienced people to help the youngsters out, with a view for development and potential success down the line.

Can we really see Welnix continuing to lose money just so we can develop Kiwi players.
But this is the question faced by all "small clubs in big leagues". Developing young players and then pocketing the transfer fees is all that keeps some of them afloat. And if Welnix can't make it pay and they get tired of funding losses, they'll sell the club; remember that in the new independent league they can sell the club (i.e. intellectual property and league place) without the club ceasing to exist.

Of course not. But it is my impression that the key is to have enough money in revenue to be able to bolster the squad with good imports, to balance out the development with potential for success.
There has to be the right mix - a whole team of U20s won't do anything in the A-League; if you don't have a good team, individuals will find it harder to shine too. Last year, we got that mix right - Rufer, Singh, Cacace all as first team regulars with solid imports and experienced Aussies.

I agree the current squad is very youth heavy and we need some more experience to balance it out.
Experienced Aussies can certainly fill that role, but there is not alot to choose from other A league clubs discards. Unless Talay can lure some experienced players from overseas Aussies or Kiwi's (Like Williams last year) its hard pickings.
The fact that Talay only spoke to Devlin earlier in the week to offer him a contract, I wonder if some other options have not worked out for him so far.
Still plenty of spots to fill on the roster and they haven't spent up large yet so I'm hoping we see some more experienced signings in the next while.

Decent return on investment this year with Singh, no? And we can't assume they aren't ready- see Rufer. Think the academy and player development are part of core business now, hence signing Uffie.
think we need a couple of journey men- a la Willo and Dura to bolster the kids. But yeh, we're guna have a team and we've got a coach.
wana see us sign another experienced CB, and then another player who can cover along the backline or DM.

Dura wasn't a journeyman, we were his second professional club.

It seems we forgot what the word journeyman means again
Can we not go down that road again please. Thanks.
According to stuff the Nix have brought in Tim Payne, Myer Bevan, Te Atawhai Hudson-Wihongi and Mohamed Awad on trial.
See it is a big tick for the improvement of Nix's image within NZ football circles, in the last 12 months - that Payne has agreed to trial.
That's if he did turn down the chance to trial this time last year, as was widely reported.
That and the fact an Ole graduate like McCowatt has signed up, are positive future signs.

4th choice or 4th tier?
The chance to pick the brains of Steven Taylor who has oodles of experience at a high level; or sit in Sweden and hope a half decent club in a respectable league comes in for ya. Bit easier for him to link up for a European deal with a Dutch passport but still, it's a bit of hit and hope for mine.
Reckon we could be in for Payne and TAHW, hopefully the latter is over his injury troubles of recent times too.
Taylor and Devere are hardly consistent when it comes to injuries. I reckon Talay will sign a few more CBs/players who can cover CB. Hopefully, young Nando is one of those players

Spot on. We need backup. DeVere and Taylor will likely be injured at some point.
One more CB with a-league or above experience.
Also Dura now has 3 clubs. That was the joke. Keep up people
We have signed the Wonder Kid.

Who?
Ulises Davila
In Davila's presser Ufuk hinted we may see another foreign signing as early as next week......

Sydney Olympic
Paramatta Power
Balestier Khalsa
Newcastle Jets
Nix
Sydney FC (Loan as take that as you will)
Western United

Anybody know who is to the left on Waine?
Anybody know who is to the left on Waine?
Kinda looks like Ryan De Vries...
I thought that was Jashua Sotirio.
I thought that was Jashua Sotirio.
Think they were meaning the guy in between Sotirio and Waine in the photo.
I'm in the same boat though, it's hard getting used to these new faces.
The guy at the back does bear a slight resemblance to Ryan de Vries though - He wasn't in the squad for Gifu's midweek Emperor Cup match too.
Also thought it could have been TAHW with a slightly different hairstyle than usual.
