Hope they can sign Hopper up for a couple of years same as Ball.
Nix Transfer Speculation 2019-20
So if it does turn out to be Hooper, which on paper is a great signing, I'm wondering if all the "We haven't got a decent striker. Dome, Morrison, the Club, Talay have all failed. It's an absolute disgrace. Shambles of a Club" brigade will be popping in to comment...

Not sure that's fair; there were legitimate concerns that we wouldn't get one over the line, and it looks we have lucked out with his Iran move falling through - I don't think we haven't tried hard, though, as it seems like we've been looking to get him since August.

Legitimate concerns or not, we should at least be big enough to say 'bloody well done' if and when a signing like this is confirmed.
NIIIICE GARY!

I think it's fair to have had concerns, I've expressed them myself, but there's a bit of a reality check needed in some places. I'm sure everyone at the Club has been only too well aware that we needed a striker and haven't been siting on their hands waiting for one to drop out of the sky to us. To start laying into everybody and anybody because a deal hadn't been done, without knowing the ins and outs of the situation, is a bit OTT in my opinion.

I agree with all that. And on the subject of getting lucky, well there is an element here of making your own "luck". If we'd panic signed the Japanese chap (for example) we wouldn't even have had the chance to get lucky. This is a glowing endorsement of the strategy not to just sign someone for the sake of it.
Do we know if the announcement is being livestreamed anywhere?
If it is him it's pulled together so quickly that we must have already been in talks with him for awhile. Talay has said you need a plan b and c and while Hooper might have been our plan a we might have been his plan b

If they get him across the line fair enough. But it is reasonable to wonder what we would be doing if his move to Iran hadn't fallen through
How long until the angst about his contract not being long enough?

1 year deal.

Could also wonder if they have been/still were chasing other people? As I said, I have no problem with raising concerns or wondering about it all. Just the perspective thing sometimes :-)
....and I'm as guilty as anybody else sometimes, so I'm not claiming any moral high ground on this one.
Has anyone tried to ring the Intercontinental today and ask if a guest named Gary Hooper has checked in?

He might be under a fake name. Be sure to try Harry Gooper, too
Hooper Confirmed!!!!
Hooper signs!
HOOPER!
awesome
Fudgeing incredible!
IT'S HOOPER
This is huge! Fudge yeah!
Fantastic signing.
Truly thrilled by this. If he can replicate some of Krishna's form and to some degree what Le Fondre has been doing in Sydney - we can be a top six side.
LMAO from doomsville a couple of days ago watch the complete opposite view start to appear.Dont go to early guys.
Have no doubt we will be a top 6 side now.
First post in this thread to mention the name
Decent twitter thread of realistic strikers that could come to the a-league who are off contract: https://twitter.com/Jon_T1996/status/1160015994846236672
Would take Hooper, Moukandjo, Mbakogu and Rossi (if fit)
Covert the agent is saying we are signing a English striker to lead the line
Gary Hooper would be amazing
Did Newsy explode?
Hooper would be outstanding (even if Newsy would likely explode) but probably a pipe dream.
Not available this weekend for Sydney though, we have to wait till the following weekend against Perth
i do not follow british football except scores on the news so may be the only one that has never heard of hooper, so i hope you guys that know of him are right in what you say.
still not convinced that one player is going to change things from a bottom half of the table team to a top of the table team in the blink of an eye like people are saying on here.
Hooper would be an absolute baller in this league, he could definitely put up adam le fondre numbers. I know some wsw fans thought they might be in for him a few months back, but obviously nothing came of it. Don't want to get my hopes up because its pretty unlikely but he would be brilliant
"There's a couple of players we're looking at but we've got to see who fits into our team and into our budget."
After this comment. Not holding my breath on a high profile striker signing.
More likely to be a lower tier grafter than someone a bit more prolific like a Gary Hooper type.
Nix article on Hoops on website just up.
Pretty amazing:
"He is the first and only player ever to have scored in the Premier League, Championship, League One, League Two, FA Cup, League Cup, Football League Trophy, FA Trophy, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, Scottish Cup, Scottish League Cup and the Scottish Premier League."
...and now the A-League !!!
Yeah throwing a name out there, Giuseppe Rossi or Bony? Has to be a player on that level for this amount of hype right?
Gary Hooper?
Good call!
It will be the Japanese striker or Lewis.
(let's be honest, it won't be any of em but we can dream).
- Wilfried Bony
- Jonathas
- Gary Hooper
Rodri- Obafemi Martins
- Giuseppe Rossi
