Do we pick him up? I liked him in CB

Talay declined the chance to re-sign him in the off season, so it's not gonna happen. We have 2 roster spots left, Lewis and Musa would be my wish list.

Agreed, though don't think Musa will get any gametime; surprisingly DeVere hasn't been injured yet.

Trying to sign Musa in January would be more about planning for the future, none of our DM's have a contract for next season atm. We could end up having to try and replace Rufer & Steinmann in the off season, so we should grab a quality option that is available now.

What is the latest on Musa? Wasnt he doing well for the rising suns?

He wasn't included on the list of returning players for next season that Phoenix Rising put out. No clue about his future plans tho

In a recent interview he mentioned an interest in returning to the Nix.

Can’t remember if he has a Green Card. He’s probably off the radar now of any MLS sides, but there are 30 plus USL teams so someone there would definitely pick him up if he wants to stay Stateside, as he’s tried and proven at that level.

He also has a British passport IIRC so he might be trying to find a club somewhere in the Football League - wouldn't begrudge him that and I'm sure there would be interested clubs in League One/Two

Good point. From memory Ryan Nelsen, helped him score a gig at Fulham post London Olympics, but he was a loanee straight away to Hereford??

Age 27, you’d think if he some ambition he’d fancy one last try at a level above USL, which would seem very much a ‘safety first/comfort level choice’.  Little strange that he fell off radar at Phoenix Rising as at one stage seemed an important player there.

Is Musa good enough?  USL isn't a high level.  That second DM spot is generally a visa player, I'm not convinced by that option unless as a replacement for Rufer and he's doing pretty well currently.

Who is our backup DM at this point? Payne is playing RB, TAHW seems to be seen as a CB.

Would rather have Musa than Devlin (who slotted in there vs Adelaide) to back up Steinmann and Rufer, if only for the NZer bit - and I haven't been overly impressed with Devlin.

I still think we should offer Themi a chance to spend a 1.5 years Down Under and reconnect with family and friends over here.

His former club was relegated, he's getting hardly any minutes in Poland.
He's versatile, quite good and this could be a mutually beneficial arrangement.

I can actually see him dethroning DeVere (who was very good vs Adelaide I must say) and providing extra MF cover if required.

Surely his Polish club would welcome the chance to terminate his contract without paying him out (especially if he continues to not be required)...

Phoenix Rising set a bunch of records en route to the best-ever regular season (although they did bomb in the playoffs). He'd be a relatively cheap local option who can cover multiple positions.

Harrison Delbridge came from the USL and is playing very well for City this season. His transition took a season tho

Rufer had trials overseas before returning to sign for us for one season. I'm sure he has ambitions to head overseas still, so us grabbing a  possible replacement for him when available would be a good idea.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/116047245/all-white-james-musa-rode-a-20game-winning-streak-with-phoenix-rising

"What I remember of Wellington Phoenix, I signed my first contract coming up 10 years ago and really was a kid with little to no experience," Musa said. "If I could remember going back to those days it would be as simple as that. I didn't really know where I was and I hadn't found myself.

"It was all new to me and I didn't know what it took to be a professional athlete. I don't believe there was a system back then that allowed you to transition into professional football and be as successful as you can be but now, 10 years on from that, you have things like the Wellington Phoenix Football Academy, the Ole Football Academy, you have all these things that can provide a better start for these kids so they don't run into little issues or mistakes like I might have made.

"All experiences are good experiences and I wouldn't change anything because it made me who I am today but I would've loved to have had a little more guidance and maybe not taken it for granted as much as I did. I'm still happy with the way everything has worked out and I'll never look back on anything in anger, it is what it is."

Musa was one of those players who was completely thrown to the wolves by Ricki.

Yep it's one of the reasons ND I went off Ricki. He played young kids before they were ready to try to save his job.

If Cacace was to get his European dream in this window, are we in for McGarry, Doyle, or some young Aussie that Ufuk has coached somewhere? Who is our current back up left back btw?

Talay didn't want Doyle, so that isn't happening. Best case if Libby gets bought by a Euro club, is that he stays on loan to finish out the season cuz it's better than just playing for their academy side.

He's fit enough to start, you don't go through all that effort to get him fit only to ditch him when he is.

Coach Ufuk Talay said he plans to bolster his squad by recruiting an additional player to combat the absence of Louis Fenton and Reno Piscopo.

So where does he need to strengthen the squad?

Up front we seem to have options, and everyone would be happy to see Waine get some game time.

In midfield we have a spoil of talent atm, with Payne able to slot in there as well if required.

For me at the moment I would be most concerned if Taylor and / or Devere went down injured (Really unlucky, but we saw what happened to WU losing two CB in the one game).

TAHW and McGing are both rookies at this level, I'd be nervous if they were our CB pairing. It was good to see TAHW get some game time last week and I hope that continues.

And Elliot seems to be out of favour at RB, he hasn't even featured on the bench.

Talay makes point signing will be made with half an eye on next season. So a stop gap older player it won’t be.

Who knows what other younger players are floating around the NPL ranks that Talay may have his eye on. Any youngsters at Sydney FC getting no game time?

I think Clayton Lewis is a good shot. Payne could slot into CB in need, though that would really leave Elliott as the only RB, and yes he seems a bit out of favour at the moment.

Apparently Piscopo is attracting interest elsewhere, so Nix may look to cash in, with Lewis a medium-long term replacement option.

Yeh, I beleive the reason Talays system is working so well is that most all his signings are players that have good technical ability. It's great to watch especially in the short passing style these guys are playing.

I can see Cayton Lewis would fit into this.

Clayton Lewis would make sense, could see him fitting into Piscopo's role or Davila's at a pinch. Would be good to give Uli a little rest at some point.

To be honest I'd more be concerned if he gets injured - not a whole lot of back up

At RB yes. He is still developing in the role but Billingsley might be worth a look, whether he wants to leave his studies for a squaddie contract is another story tho.
