On 3 News today, Noah Hickey has turned down an offer from the Phoenix and won't join the club.

Sad.

Thoughts?

I wonder what has taken place, does he think the offer was insulting??

Does he have an offer from a better A League club??

Or does he have an offer from europe??

Whatever has happend this is a real shame as he was at the top of the list as one of the players this club needed for at least the first season.

Musnt have been a good enough offer. I hope he goes overseas and does well. Your all class Noah, all class.

You've got to be joking!!!! I heard he was turning down contracts os that he could play with a New Zealand based a-league team. He's a brilliant player, why is he not wanting to play for the Phoenix???

After hearing that girls blouse pout and moan on the tranny this morning good riddance to him...

Just the kind of mental fortitude the Phoenix DONT need.

According to Radiosport this morning, he's retired from all football.  Doesn't want to move to Wellington and apparently his relationship with Herbert's gone downhill.

Of course this could be an Alosi-style retirement, but seeing he wasn't on contract anywhere its probably genuine.

Noah born 09.06.1978- so 28, nearly 29. Shame to see him leave the game.

There are some pretty ugly stories lurking under the skin of that tour to Costa Rica and Venezuela...

what stories? do tell!

He was one of the few decent knights players. He gave it everything every game and didn't accept sh*t effort or performances from his team mates.

What happened between him and Ricki?

Big loss for the Phoneix. Gain for crap reality t.v. though. hickey the next champion of dancing with the stars.

I can't get anyone to tell me, but I keep hearing vague statements about there being a lot of problems.

Hickey is only an average player
Not a huge loss in my opinion
Can do better than him

Stuff has an article up saying he is going to announce his retirement today. And that Ricky Herbet upset him during the All Whites tour last month.

An average player with neither the presence or skill to command a contract.  The removal of the previous dead wood appears to be progressing......

Good player, but not a huge loss really. Obviously wanted too much $$, thinks hes better than he is!

This from stuff.co.nz

All White Noah Hickey has retired from soccer, he said today.

The New Zealand international for 10 years said he declined an offer to join the new A-League franchise Wellington Phoenix, as his relationship with coach Ricki Herbert soured during the All Whites' recent trip to South America.

The former New Zealand Knights player said he has had "enough of soccer" and was looking forward to doing other things.

Hickey is scheduled to make the announcement of his retirement at a media conference in Auckland today.

All sounds a bit petty, really. But I guess the biggest dramas in soccer are. See David Beckham vs. Alex Furgeson (I know that's spelt wrong), etc. for evidence.

He woulda been good, but I don't think he's irreplaceable.

Noah who?

If he doesn't want us - we don't want him.

COME ON THE PHOENIX!!!!
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Well said Kiwill, as a player we only want you if you are 100% committed to the PHOENIX!!!!
He was a big fish in a poor team (Knights) and would have been a little fish in a good team (PHOENIX)
It appears Herbet is sorting out the men from the boys.
We only want winners????

Well said. Good luck Noah.

i rated noah as a player i think he was the knights best player over the 2 years. its a bit of a blow for  gettin lots of new zealanders in the squad as he was one of the more well equipped new zealanders in the a league.

What a loser we don't need players like that

almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

He was actually a winner, not a loser, one of the most consistent players for the Knights in the final round where we were the second top team. Kickarse you have no idea.
This is a sad day.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Thanks for the memories Noah, he was a good guy to the fans. Wonder what happened on that South American tour?

Thought he let himself done a bit today saying the Phoenix should be doing all they could to sign Danny Hay.

from radio sport website.  did anyone hear the actual press conference?  sounds a little bit bitter to me

Hickey turns down Wellington Phoenix5/2/2007 12:20 PM

All White Noah Hickey's departing words are Ricki Herbert should not be coaching two teams and turned down a Phoenix contract

Retiring All White Noah Hickey believes national coach Ricki Herbert should not be in charge of two teams.

Hickey is fed up with his treatment in recent times and is disillusioned after a difficult All Whites tour to South America. He does not think Herbert can do both jobs. Hickey says there should be a coach for each team with Herbert coaching one of them.

He says he was offered a contract by the Phoenix but after 10 years it is time to do something else.

Bloody shame yes is does sound  a bit bitter, hope none of the others who may be signed that were on that tour feel the same way.

Thought Noah might have had a role to play in Wellington.  Was reasonable for Knights over 2 seasons.  But not a devastating loss for Phoenix.
football tragic for too long

Doing what exactly? Sure as hell wouldn't have been playing football, unless St Margaretsbury had their scouts out.

A very overrated player, that didn't have enough technical skill or flair to be a forward or winger, didn't have enough strength or defensive awareness to be a decent defender, didn't have enough presence to be an effective midfielder.

A nice guy, who always appeared to be giving at least 90% (which was about 80% more than some teammates), but gees, we ain't exactly going to miss him.

All the best for his future endeavors though, not even 30, the world is his oyster.

exactly what I was gonna say!!
he loves it on there.... and they love him.

I wouldn't be adverse to that (unless he's gonna have an anti-Ricki agenda - that would be lame).
But flip, he'd be 100 times better than Fred de Jong on telly, that guy fires me up

Hickey has the potential to be a good media face for football if someone is prepared to develop him. Much better long term career option for him too. We definitely need some more professional people than those clowns on Sky we currently have to put up with.

I think he overrates himself.
