odd time for an opportunity

i would like to get peoples thoughts on why with 3 minutes to go in what had been termed by ricki as a crucial game you would give costa his opportunity. i understand the need to have him in the squad and expose him but why in this particular game would you give him his shot and say why not against perth who are oone of the weaker teams? i could of understood if he came on with 10-15 to go and that gives him a real taste but with 3 to go? i presume ricki knew elrich didnt have the legs to go 90 so y not have a coveny or a george on the bench? the whole thing just seemed strange,

Can believe Costa got a go ahead of George. Pretty ridiculous.
Great to se he put Tim Brown in, i thought he was great.
Hopefully George will be back next week.

Meh I didn't mind it. Looking at how all of the other young guns have been going in the A-League....

I though Costa played well with the time he got.  can't see what your complaining about.

I'm with betters.

He did no worse or better than George has in his cameos, but has the advantage of being 17 and a New Zealander.

i wasnt complaining, i was wondering what the rationale was it for. in reposnse to valeo comments about how the other young guys have gone, theyve been given more than 3 minutes. he was good when he came on so why not bring him on for longer than the time he got.

Just give the young fella a chance. Good on ricki for trying things tho!

I say tackle him in the face.

How/why is that an advantage?

because one of the reasons the FFA gave a franchise to New Zealand was to develop New Zealand players, that is a specific instruction, therefore it is beneficial for the Phoenix to be giving opportunities to players like costa and beneficial if they are succeeding. I agree that thought costa looked lively and was worth the the time he got

We have New Zealanders and we have foreigners in our squad. I'm more interested in us playing our strongest team than playing someone because they happen to be born here.

I'm with Arsenal on this one, but I have the bias of being something of a foreigner myself. That being said, 3 minutes to go and with desperation to get a goal, why not put on some fresh legs to try clinching the win? Costa did pretty good with the time he got, I hope to see him on the pitch more often.

Probably a good thing for him too, to get a bit of game time. Will only make you strive to perform better, and that may have more to do with Rickis reasoning than expecting a miracle, last minute wonder-goal.

A nervous first pass and after that he settled. What an achievement for the young fella, making your debut in front of the home fans, despite the result, a day he'll treasure!

I like Costa, he's a fantastic attacking player, but in all honesty I really think he lacks the physical aspect to compete at the moment and is possibly slightly over-rated. I marked him in our Chatham Cup tie and while yes he did make me look like a twat 75% of the time, I found that the tighter I got to him and the harder I hit him in tackles he didn't really want a bar of it... Awesome player all the less and good on him for getting where he did but I think they need to bulk him up a bit lol, showed when that CCM defender just brushed him off to the side...

Not as much as when Dodd brushed Kruse off and left him face planted in the advertising.

I'm glad Costa got a few minutes. Good on him. Onward and upward from here. Maybe it has something to do with the mighty Greeks qualifying for Euro 2008 the same week!

Didn't that just make you feel all warm inside!

I guess an 87th min substitute probably wouldn't make too much of an impact on the game anyway...so would it really matter who came on?

I say bring on all the young guns, you can garuntee they will play out of their skins when they are trying to prove they are worthy of a starting position in the team. at this point we dont have a lot to loose either so might as well let them run riot

That was genius.

Not a foul either.

On the Costa issue I don't think Ricki was realistically trying to change the game with him, more like giving him a chance to run out and get a feel for it when the game was really already over.

He did pretty well too.

Not Sure I agree with that.  I've posted elsewhere this week that I thought it was an odd decision to bring him on when we were 1-1 and needing a win against the league leaders.  Surely you bring on someone with experience who can make an impact?

Save the blooding of young guys for when we are 3-1 up with ten to go.  Is he that good anyway?  I thought he was poor at the U17 World Cup or whatever it was.

Potentially that good I think, yes.

I believe in you LGM, you're never too old!  Bit of work in the new year on your fitness and you're the new defensive rock for the boys.  I'll try and get my knees working and take over at left back.
