At the end of the article about Sydney's current woes, is this

""In other news, Sydney has agreed to enter a sister-club relationship with Chinese Super League powerhouse, Shanghai Shenhua. Under the partnership the two clubs will meet in friendly matches in Shanghai and Sydney. The agreement will also allow for exchanges of techniques and ideas in the areas of coaching as well as player development. The deal is the latest in several between A-league clubs and overseas teams.""

So who would we have a "brother - club" relationship with if we could?

Is there any loose arrangement existing now?

What are the other deals around the A Leagues?

Are there any real benefits?

I think it would be have to be an Asian team, Europe is too far away, and it would guarantee a couple of warm up matches at the start of the season if nothing else

Northern Spirit - Rangers : Pretty much killed Northern Spirit.
Kingz - Chelsea : Nothing
Glory - Leeds : Milosevic and Hay to leeds, Glory ? Nothing.
Glory - Man. City : Nothing.
Knights - Charlton : Nothing.
Central Coast - Sheffield United : Nothing (as yet)

All they are is a giant excuse for a press conference and to date not one of these relationships (and there are more) have ever resulted in a tangible benefit for the club in this part of the world.

Having an Asain club would be great it looks like GCU have one and that they will get a few players from them.

Really ?

They have close to a full squad and most of (many suspect more of) the salary cap used , and why would Beijing send players to Aus if they are good enough to be playing in China ?  The Chinese leagues appear to be a slightly lower standard than the A-League but the salaries similar or higher.

Also, let's look at the Chinese additions to the A-League.  Qu Shengqing (apologies for spelling) was an Adelaide Marquee in V1 and wasn't bad, the Knights had Xiaobin Zhang and he was dreadful.

In V2 we had Gao who really was good and Li Yan who was meant to be a Chinese international who played all of twenty minutes and was awful.  Queensland had the 'Chinese Beckham' Zhang Yuning who was quite spectacularly average.  Then we had Gao this year.

Would you sign a Chinese player based on the precedents ?

Doesn't make any sense to me and I'm calling shenanigans on any links like this until an Australian side get a genuine benefit.

Heres the link News: http://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2008/10/01/16917_gold-coast-soccer.html

The bit about their brother club:

"Palmer, whose business tentacles probe deep into China, personally brokered the deal with Guoan with the two clubs set to play each other home and away on an annual basis as well as indulging in players exchange, coaching co-operation and joint marketing projects."

Just saw this in that article: "Palmer reiterated the club would ferry its players about in one of his three jets, emblazoned with a Gold Coast United crest and complete with a multi-million dollar refit." Is that meant to be a statement of how rich he is?

Oh, I know what was said, as I said it's an excuse for a press release.

The Galaxy already have 18 players signed (without the proposed Porter and Culina signings) have three import spots used on Brazilians and no Chinese player has managed to set the A-League alight in a way that would encourage anyone to use an import spot on them.  No link has ever delivered for a club in this part of the world.

Supposedly the clincher in the Porter deal is a job for his wife at one of Palmer's mining companies.  The whole thing is a pissing competition to Palmer and Blieberg.  Hope they fall flat on their faces.

HN, I have read both your explanations in this thread and to be honest, never a truer word has been said. These arrangements  never produce anything.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

2 teams from Gold Coast are joining next season? Wow, even before Sydney and Melbourne, that's a surprise...

I hope they will have a sad time on their jets next year, coming back from a 4-0 hammering at Perth!! and then another 3-0 in melbourne, and of course a decent 2-0 loss at the RoF!! Hope they choke on their champagne and the flight attendants give them all STD's.

If things go as I hope, Smeltzy will miss us so much and maybe he'll come back to us :)

Adelaide - Miami FC: Romario guest stint, Diego - correct? I could be wrong, didn't know about it at the time but have heard that since.

Pissing on his fish and chips (metaphorically speaking of course) seems to be a strange way to ask him to come back.

Sister club arrangements are a waste of time and have never ever ever ever ever worked. Why would they? Why would any club in any league waste time and money to promote their club elsewhere and for the benefit of others? If there is no financial return why waste valuable resources on a feel good cause? Impractical and unworkable, as HN surmised.

What's sight without sound? Love without peace? Copulation without conception?

A bit unrealistic, but did we not have 'relations' with boro? Or was that just the one off locky thing.

in the begining....

I heard that there would be a sister-club relationship with AEK Athens because of our Greek ties (Seripisos).
You know we belong together...
