Paston's a keeper for Phoenix
Tuesday, 23 December 2008

GOALKEEPER Mark Paston has pledged his ongoing allegiance to Wellington Phoenix FC, re-signing with the club for another season.

The deal with New Zealand international keeper Paston, 32, is key aspect of the Phoenixs plans for the Hyundai A-League 2009/10 season given the pending departure of Kiwi compatriot Glen Moss to Melbourne Victory next year.

Paston, who was brought into the Phoenix as the number one custodian for the clubs inaugural season, has been hampered by some unlucky injuries during his time with the Wellington outfit but he has grabbed his chances with both hands when fit.

The big keeper said he was thrilled to have locked in another season in the New Zealand capital.

Im a Kiwi, Ive played for the (New Zealand) Knights and Ive had two years here. I enjoy playing for a New Zealand-based club in the Australian league and the Phoenix is a club I definitely wanted to stay at.

Im happy to have things sorted and finalised. My wife and I went to university in Wellington for four years and weve got a house here. Its a wonderfully close-knit city here and my wife and I feel very settled here, which is important.

Having recovered from a rib injury that kept him out of the Phoenixs previous two matches a 1-1 draw with Perth Glory and last weekends 1-0 win against the Central Coast Mariners Paston is fit for this weekends Hyundai A-League 2008/09 clash against the Queensland Roar at Suncorp Stadium.

With Moss likely to retain the starting spot on Sunday, Paston is keen to renew the fierce rivalry with his Kiwi mate.

Obviously weve got the rest of the season to take care of and Im definitely going to be fighting for the number one spot in the remaining five matches. Glens come in and hes playing well, which is what everyone expected him to do, so itll be tough getting back in the team.

Thats how it should be its good for the club to have two good keepers fighting for that spot. Then, come next season, Ill be continuing that competition for that number one spot with whoever the club brings in to replace Glen.

Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert said Paston had been a quality performer for the club and was a great acquisition for next season.

Weve worked through a list of players we wanted to retain for next season and Mark was always on that list. It took some time to work through the contract details and re-sign him, but its great to have him at the club. Hes been excellent when hes come in for us and Im sure hell continue to make every post a winning post.

The Phoenix are now searching for another keeper to complement Paston next season.

We need to back Mark up with another keeper who can challenge him for that starting spot and keep the competition right, but well take our time with that one, Herbert said.

With Paston now fit and set to join the Phoenix squad in Brisbane this weekend, short-term injury replacement keeper Scott Higgins returns home to the Gold Coast.

The re-signing of Paston brings to 14 the number of current Phoenix players contracted by the club for next season and beyond. Along with Paston, the re-signed or currently contracted players are Daniel, Ben Sigmund, Tim Brown, Tony Lochhead, Andrew Durante, Jon McKain, Leo Bertos, Michael Ferrante, David Mulligan, Vince Lia, Troy Hearfield and Costa Barbarouses and Manny Muscat.

This is really good news, it will be great to have Paston on again!

He did very well for the few games before he got injured. Before that he was very shaky though imo. Maybe he just needed time to settle in.

Definitely happy that he's re-signed, I think he'll continue to do a great job between the Phoenix sticks.  Personally I'd rather we spent money on good strikers than a 'better keeper'.  Great to know he's sticking with us!

last year I had doubts about Pasty. This year I don't anymore. To be really honest I rate Mossy a bit higher than him, but Mark has proven that he's a valid goalkeeper and if the defence holds, he won't let in 10000 goals like we did last year.

Well done, club!
now let's bring back Spoonley.

Surprised he didn't strain muscles in his hand or something when he signed!

Hopefully he can remain fit!

Heard a rumour Theoklitos is in the mix so that would be nice. Paston is fine as back up though.

And I heard last week that Hard News ate a salad! Doesn't mean it's 100% accurate though

are you trying to tell me that Hard News actually DID eat a salad? Thats a big call, kind of like saying that Feverish can write great songs or that Smithy is a really funny man!

Well from the news story on FFT about giggles signing as our injury replacement Bosnich was keen to come but wanted first team football guarranteed. I'd be pretty happy with that sort of pickup really.

I like the way he attempts to catch the ball rather than punching. I'm rapt he's re-signed for us. With moss going (Thanks for the memories mossy - a legend) shame we cant sign Higgins. Met him today and what a tall fella. Looks impressive at the pre match and halft time warm ups too! Might even make a damn good center forward for crosses!

Paston isn't the best keeper in the world but really pretty much every keeper in the A-League has been poor this season. Even Theo has been quite terrible. Galekovich was great for very short period in the ACL. Moss and Paston have been the best keepers for the last few games. valeo2008-12-23 23:40:52

It would be great to get another keeper that can keep Paston on his competitive toes. I really don't think that you should have a keeper that should be too comfortable between the sticks when the reserve can easily take his place. The keepers in A-league are not that much better than what we have.

Tbh, we should be able to get a very good keeper from NZ rather than Australia. There are plenty of GK talent about, they just need the higher intensity of competition to prove their worth.

Not Bosnich!!

But good news- Paston has done alright and was getting into some good form before he got injured. Dont rate him as highly as Moss, but I think he's good enough. Would rather we spent the money trying to find a replacement for Smeltz

At this stage of his career, I'd think Bosnich will want to go somewhere where he'll be getting regular 1st team football. He won't be interested in sitting on the bench.

Although Paston's form dipped after a good start, I don't think there's any doubt that he's a good keeper and I'm glad we've re-signed him. Nice to see someone putting pen to paper after negotiating a new deal, rather than buggering off somewhere else.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

It's definitely good news that Paston re-signed and great to have kiwis in the team. I wouldn't rule out having Bozza as the first team keeper if he joined us though. But promising him, or any other A-League keeper, an unconditional and regular first team spot (unlikely) would have to be out of the question.
