I think really what most people are saying is that with the deflection about 20 out Paston should have been more nimble and made a better attempt to get to the ball, despite the deflection. Which is fair enough from a keeper at this level.
It was great to see Paston just nullifying the danger of crosses against Sydney in the last few minutes. The opposing attackers were just not in the game.
I think he deserves at least another chance. It is fair to point out that the number of goals we conceded early on all went past Moss for one reason or another even if most agree he was not at fault in most cases.
I don't want to carry this on forever but the passage from this GK manual is very selective. where does it mention the scenario of defenders between the ball and goal? If you were to blindly follow this piece of advice, then where would the GK stand during a corner kick? And I'm sorry, you do take into account the possibility of deflections - there is a very high chance that there will be a deflection when there are players in front of the ball. You know how you take that into account? by not coming too far off your line......
At the end of the day we are talking about half a step in this case. That half a step might have been enough for him to react to the deflection and save the shot.
On that sceond goal, soley on what Paston did; I think he needed to have committed himself quicker to coming for the ball, that split second mattered. Here the text book instructions would have applied.
What some people need to understand is that at this level, a split second or half a step make all the difference. If its in midfield it might go unnoticed, but unfortunately for us Keepers, those little miscalculations (and that's all they are) sometimes result in goals.
Another little exercise is to look at some goalies (especially the ones who seem to specialise in flashy saves) and see if they make some saves harder than they had to be. Sometime sits because they haven't been positioned quite right in the first place and end up doing something like tipping over the bar with a giant leap rather than a quicl step and jump to catch.

Except against Melbourne.

Moss punches and Paston catches is my first thought on comparing the two. Both are great shot stoppers. Moss tends to stick near the 6 yard box and Paston takes his whole area under his control.
Paston has done well in his last two games, especially considering his lack of 1st time. I'm just glad we have both keepers on our books.
As for El**ch, he only ever scores long range spectacular goals from right back. That this one got a deflection didn't help. The midfeild or defence should have closed him down earlier, you just knew a shot was going to happen.
And as for the definately offside goal, not Paston's fault at all.

I agree, It's been nice seeing a keeper that has good hands under a high ball - very re-assuring. Both keepers have plusses and minusses. I think we'll see more changing around in the future and maybe Moss won't be in for so many games in a row as in the past. I think Moss will get the next game and Ricki will play it a game at a time from there.
