Pavlovic is a good impact player, he just lacks some finishing. But he's quick and takes on the line. Rather see him come on than a midfielder.

Is he better than Dakota Lucas though?Luis Garcia2011-12-11 01:02:39

Wow, some real blinkered hatred for Pav on here, I'd say more so for his past indiscretions than his play tonight.

He came on, he kept the ball moving, and he made the Perth defence scramble. He has the pace to make teams think twice, that nobody else in the team has.

More importantly, he was going forward and wasn't come back over half-way to play fetch the ball. He wasn't running away from goal to play the ball backwards.

And didn't get pushed off the ball, that I saw.

You can swear at him all you want for the red card, apparently even Ricki thought a straight red was over the top, since they're going to appeal.

So how about less of the blinkers, until we see someone who can offer something better. Because honestly, nobody else on the pitch offered anything better up front than Pav did tonight.

An appeal would surely be deemed frivolous. Although at the time I was at first confused by the straight red, since it was pretty clear that Pav's idea was to clip the player's heels to prevent him charging up field and maybe instigating a goal.

This is the type of offence you see almost every match, usually involving a trip, a body check or a shirt pull, and it's almost always punished with a yellow card. After the late equaliser we conceded against GCU a few of our guys mentioned that someone should've taken the goal scorer Brown out and copped a yellow for the team. Misguidedly maybe, I think this was what flashed through Pav's head. I assume the ref did not see it as that kind of offence but rather classified it as a studs up tackle from behind, hence the red.

You make some good points here. Pav is not the worlds greatest player but when he comes on it does show how lumbering some of the rest of our attack is. We really do need some pace up front.

I said it before.....Pav is the Grendl to our Boewulf.
He came on and played well, then went berserk. Maybe he just needs to grow up a bit?

I think this will be a dumb move and go the same way as the Melbourne one with an extra game added. Studs in the back of the achillies? Thats exactly why FIFA outlawed tackles from behind - career enders. Ask Marco van Basten

I will be happy when Pav's contract is terminated. 100% pure twatness, but on and off the pitch.

I never did like Pav, and after that stupid tackle I dislike him even more. At least it wasn't someone useful who got sent off!

I'm just going to come out and say this: Pav coming on gave us momentum that lead to the goal.

He played well in this match, and if he was a more mature player he might have made what Ross Aloisi calls a 'good' foul.

I thought having such an attacking bench was ballsy, and being able to bring on Pav, Daniel and Ward, with the players already on gave us real attacking bite.

The tackle was silly - very, very silly. But I thought prior to that Pav really added something to the team. He seems to freeze in front of goal, but he is fast and direct and can really open defences up (especially when, like Perth late in the game, they were trying to get forward). He also seems to have some technical skill. There was one long pass last night which he killed with a great first touch. He is not the finished product yet, but he shouldn't be written off.

Hangs on the back man, quick over short distances, puts himself about in the attacking third, chases everything.
Am I talking about Smeltz or Pav.
The only difference is Smeltz gets 90 minutes every game and Pav has had about 90 minutes since he came to the Phoenix..
Lets comment after the guy has had a bit of football. Another good arguement for a reserve team.

Your right, at that point it could possibly be Smeltz or Pav, however when you add, couldn't score in a brothel it quickly clarifies who you mean.

That red was horrifyingly bad, if we appeal it is idiotic, but I half hope we do so that he gets an extra week tacked on the end.

I think we have every right to comment. If he didn't do the stupid tackle there wouldn't be a thread discussing him, he brings it on himself.

fred de jong absolutely slated pav saying, 'he's got bricks in his head' or something like that.

he was not wrong, but...

bought back a memory of de jong doing something similar in a crunch world cup qualifier in his last ever game for nz,

the difference being that we lost that one because of fred's petulance.

so fred, who has blocks in his head?

He was playing well until that happened. Calls to terminate his contract are stupid, even more stupid than pavs foul. He will be punished by a suspension and hopefully learm from it. Yesterday he caused more problems than any other attacking player and he was only on the pitch for 20 odd minutes. I'm quite excited he is going to be an extremely important player for the rest of the season.

not defending his dumb actions, but ive heard he really was trying to knuckle down this year.

But last night's acions - I thought he was more effective than greenacre to be honest. We needed more direct attack in that final quarter of the game, and Pav brought that less conservative approach.

He won loads of balls in the air to flick on to others, also broke the line a few times, and took the ball down well and attacked players.

Beat more men than the rest of our team - maybe not Ifill.

I think he's hot headed, but ive been impressed by his pace and his sudden ability to take on players.

I Booed him he deserved it.Christ we're struggling for strikers as it is and he's been out for the whole of this part of the A-league and goes and does that with 3 minutes to play. dumb doesn't even describe it

He has some pace, nobody else in the team does.
He causes some excitement when he's on the ball.

The tackle was dumb; I don't think we should appeal it.

That said, he really needs to score his first goal for us - probably a few minds will change once that happens.

I think the appeal will be that the tackle was just was badly timed and should have been a yellow, but I'm no expert...

Will be interesting to see if the appeal does go ahead or not.

Man was well in front of him, coming from behind in that fashion ....

Had red written all over it from where I was sitting and I know very little (relatively) about the game.

Based on what Mark Shields has said, a red card will only be overturned if and only if no referee would have correctly shown a yellow card for the offence. Based on that, the appeal will fail without a doubt.

Bit out of touch with this rule now. Is a tackle from behind a straight red.
If not it could be seen as a professional foul. yellow?
Certainly not a professional foul when the player was in a goalscoring situation. Red.

The red was for stupidity more than anything - If it wasn't so blatantly obvious that he wasn't going for the ball then no red wouldve been shown

Problem with him is that his first touch is often just a bit off, and he misses the opportunity to get in on goal. A dozen appearances and there doesn't seem to be any improvement in this department. You've either got that touch or you haven't and if you haven't you're not going to score many.

Might be interesting to see him tried in a wide Leo-like role because is definitely quick and can get inside a defender, but I'm not sure if he's capable of converting his way of thinking to this.

"The Phoenix will also be without striker Mirjan Pavlovic for the trip south, who was sent off late in the game against Perth for a cynical foul.

Herbert had suggested after the game that the club would appeal the card and the one-match ban that comes with the dismissal but they elected not to."

No goals, no assists, in his 3 seasons (admittedly riddled with injury and non-selection) of a-league football. If we had any depth in our squad he wouldn't get a look in, but no doubt if he gets to play the final 20 mins for the rest of the season hen will eventually score.

I had heard that on first look they thought it was harsh but when they saw the replay afterwards, they literally said 'what a dumb ass'

When Pav comes on he seems like Usan Bolt. But in actual fact it just shows how old and slow the rest of our fowards are.
Now if you could combine Pav's pace with Greenacres skill....what a player that would be.
[/QUOTE]

Greenacre's skill?  What skill?  He's one of the most limited, unimaginative, useless players to ever pretend to be a professional striker.  He can't turn on the ball, he shirks responsibility, he can't make anything happen.  And he's been giving up possession needless numerous times this season.  Greenie's part of the problem.

It's fun having a psycho on the sideline you can bring on late into the game.
Much more fun than bringing on a Donkey

Agreed.  Greenie runs away from taking responsibility.   He's incapable of turning on the ball, so will always thwart our own attacks.  Makes lots of mistakes, but keeps his place in the team.  Contrast with Ward, who IS skillful, but couldn't get in the starting line-up yesterday.  He'd be worth 10 Greenacres (if 10 x a negative number wasn't also a negative number)

Yip.  And several times during his A-League career he should have shot first time, but instead fannied around with extra touches to set himself up (which of course meant the chance was lost).  Bad sign really.

Maybe being a professional footballer isn't his thing.
