I would do it too!
....and if the marque turned out to be shit we could have a roster so he would come around and mow our lawns for the rest of his stay in Wellington!
You sold it to me.
Win-win.

Hats off to The Herald for running a few really good, nicely balanced, pieces on this today...
Morgan comments could turn fans away
Morgan responds to fan criticism
Morgan like a cat on a hot tin roof
I'm still surprised that nobody in the NZ media has reported Rob Morrison's comments from Aus 442 yesterday though.
It's Footpaul. Our very own Harps giving it some violence!

Austin10 - I raised this at the Wellnix takeover press conference, the response from the consortium was they wanted to create a successful model before considering share ownership or raising additional contributions from the fans. I recall the disastrous bond issue at West Ham so there's some history on this particular option. That said, I look here at the contribution YF have made to bringing forward young talent and I'm encouraged that the fans and the owners have maybe got more in common than recent media interest suggests. It seems we're all after the same thing, a successful club playing in the A league. For me though the sustainability option is based in Wellington, if we can crank the ROF crowds beyond 15,000.
If you play the football, then they will come........
I agree with Austin 10 also, and think Gareth answered some of the rubbish on here and in the papers well. Some pathetic responses in reply to it - and some good ones, like Nik and Steve
There is some inconsistent modding lately, you cant slag off and abuse the players but the owners are fair game?
Kim Dotcom, that's desparate. We are not desparate, we have a solid group of owners, and they want this to succeed, we werent under the old system, good on them/the coaching staff for calling a change
People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people.

This is pathetic and unsophisticated, and has nothing to do with football. Better stop before Gareth comes on here and reads it.
Not really.
I haven't put you, JV and Cosi on a league table.
Yet.

Back on topic - isn't a 5 year plan a bit Soviet for such bastions of free enterprise as the Welnix consortium?

The fundamental question I have is this. Long term what is to be gained by forcing a style of play that doesn't suit a bunch of players on to a team and having them finish last? How does this help anything in 2017? If Gareth wants to explain this strategy at any time I'm all ears because I do not get it. Sorry if that makes me pathetic and unsophisticated
Normo's coming home
Not really sure what to think at the moment, gutted is one way to describe it.Having brought into the whole Phoenix thing from the start despite not having an active participation in football for many years,I was one of the first to sign up when i heard about the YF site and was there at our first home game at the stadium when there was little or no merchandise around so we all either wore yellow or black,me all i had was a yellow t-shirt from a friends dubious establishment that had mid night munchies on it.LOL
Pathetic we may be but thats one of the reasons the Phoenix have been succesful and unless im wrong one of the reason the Welnix guys got involved. So keep on kicking Gareth im guessing you havnt got the balls to come sit with us again in the zone and flash that body when the boys get us to that magical 80th minute ahead.
Maybe the Welnix boys should take a look at whats about to hit Wellington in the way of promoting a game,as the AFL guys are about to ramp it up.

This, I heard ads on the radio this morning at least 3 times on my 25 minute trip to town, the promotion for this is going to be huge.
As for Gareth, my total opinion is that he needs to just shut his mouth, he keeps making it worse not better.
As for the club, Phoenix til I Die, be there screaming on Sunday showing my support for the Players and Club.
Some of you want a laugh head back to about page 160 of this thread and read forward a few pages. Its about the time Welnix took over shit were we suckered and some of us need to give ourselves a good slap.
You know what? A lot of our angst has its roots in 2 very flawed assumptions:
1. That having high expectations actually means shit. Just because we all thought this season would be good doesn't make it good. There's any number of things that could have gone wrong this season, apart from the stuff that's actually happened. That's football. Somebody has to be last. We all need to stop being a bunch of arrogant, self-entitled pussies, man the fuck up and support this team.
2. That our season is actually over already. It ain't. We beat the Jets on Sunday and we are right back in the play-off mix. At the end of this weekend we could easily be within 3 pts of 5th place, maybe even 2 pts if things go our way. This is precisely the wrong time for us as Nix supporters to go all sulky and emo. Again, we need to get our shit together and then unleash some very, very, very pent up angry shit on the Jets.
I am already over today's minor kerfuffle. Peace.

Maybe it's because of limited internet connection but I note Gareth hasn't replied to the comments on the blog this time. I hope he replies to the well thought through pieces.
I'd love to know the rest of Welnix take on this? Surely, they can't condone the way he spoke? If they do then we may have bigger issues I guess.

AFL? of course it's going to be well marketed ,it's a one off gimmick game that will draw in all the usual Wellington fadsters, next week it will be ultimate frisbee or some other nonsense !
If nothing else at least Morgan is keeping people talking about the Phoenix when from a this seasons A league perspective we are now largely irrelevant .
The answer to life's problems are rarely found at the bottom of a beer glass - but it's always worth a look.

I may be misreading what you have said but it seems to be based on a flawed assumption. That being that you can't be angry at Gareths comments and support the team wholeheartedly.

So there's the banner then-
"Hands off our Pussies!"
or,
"Oi, Morgan, leave the cats alone" (think Floyd)
I too really wish he would shut the fuck up. He may be a very rich man, he may be a great philnathropist, he may be a great guy at parties, but...
a) He is not any sort of philosopher/ deep thinker/ Guru,
b) His ideas of management belong in Tudor times,
and most importantly,
c) He knows seven tenths of sweet fuck all about football. Or handling the media.
There. I've waited a long time to get that off my chest. Perhaps he ought to just go and get an ordinary job so he doesn't sit around thinking so much.
And by the way.....we will win on Sunday, and we will win well.
I put this (above) on another thread yesterday.
Gareth handed down The Latest Sermon today.
I stand by every word (and someone said I was ranting.... listen to the disrespectful, ill-informed and terminally ill-judged garbage that Gareth came out with today FFS).
Anyway, WE WILL WIN ON SUNDAY.
Always remember...
We are the Mighty Phoenix! We can beat Anyone!
Yes I know Gareth, my family are all Season Ticket holding pathetic individuals...if you were a football supporter perhaps you could be one too!
Nostalgia isnt what it used to be...........
This thread has been adding upwards of 50 posts an hour all day, we've got two of the mods in the US which leaves me and Patrick who is new to this and like me has a real job..
In between answering and turning down a million media requests after Gareth's ill-thought comments, organising banners for this weekend, promoting Fever Friday, recording a pocast, hosting a radio show, playing football, sporting a desperate hangover, and actually doing the job I'm paid to do to an adequate standard finding time to read every post in here today just hasn't been viable.
Slagging anyone is unacceptable but short of forcing an approval on every single post or making you pay enough to fund a full time mod some shit is going to slip through. Particularly during the day.
Sorry.
Enjoyed watching you on TV3 tonight HN. Well done.
Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

I think that this is a very key point.
Also, I haven't been very active around here recently but do we know anything about what this actual plan that we are supposed to believe in whole-heartedly is, aside from playing prettier football and bringing through young players? I imagine that every other club in the league has a similar sort of plan, and they are all years ahead of us when it comes to developing a youth setup. Pretty football does not guarantee any kind of success, and forcing it onto a team that is so obviously not good enough to play it now makes absolutely no sense. I can understand a goal of evolving to a specific style of football over a period of time - a style of football that is the framework for the club, taught to players from an early age to develop them into being able to progress seamlessly through the age groups into the first team of the club - but you cannot go from where we were to that within a week. It is deluded.
There is also the problem that football evolves very quickly now, and in the 5 years or so it may take us to set up this framework, the world will have moved on. Look at Ajax from the early 90's - European powerhouse on the back of a programme put in place over many years that created an amazing style of counter-attacking football that was the complete anthithesis of what had been successful in Europe through the 80's. Within a very short space of time, every decent team in Europe was set up to either play this way, or counter it, and we barely even saw Ajax through the 2000's (I think that they even struggled in a pretty weak domestic league through that period, but some dutchies on here will no doubt prove me wrong). There were a number of factors in their (relative) demise, such as players leaving to other leagues becuase of wages, etc, but there is a real concern that we will spend 5 years implementing a framework for the club that is redundant by the time we are supposed to start reaping the rewards.
Um....this took a while, and kind of went off track - actually, I am not even sure anymore if this is the correct thread for what I am saying (or at least attempting to say).
All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite

'Playing' football
I think there are way to many sensitive Yellow Fever fans. When you actually hear the full story of events and not snippets the media release he actually raises some good points.
If I personally was a wealthy businessman after how I have seen some of the reactions by fans I wouldnt want to go near putting money into any professional team. End of the day if it wasnt for people like Gareth and Terry Serepisos then we wouldn't have a Phoenix.
We're the WELLINGTON Phoenix
And this is our Home

Queens Wharf indoor so barely football nd barelly playing
actually the guy on the right looks suspiciously like gareth morgan

OK here's an idea
People have been spouting off about the owners refusing to front up more $$$ for a marque. Why don't we add a $100 "marque surcharge" to next years season tickets. $100 x 2500 season tickets holders = $250,000 Nix fans chip in half and the owners pay the other half = $500,000.
How many of our "phoenix til I die" loyalists would put their hands in their own pocket? not many, I would guess. Its easier to bitch on about how "other" people should spend money.
