I guess it's the end of the year in Phoenix terms and they must review their Academy group at this stage?

The twitter rumour is Stellenbosch who sit top of the SAFA 1st Div (2nd tier) after 6 games. What's the view on this move for young Jack at this stage of his career?

If the +1 was adopted it would have been an easier choice, guess we will have to see what the new Gaffer thinks of him first. Article says he has been in NZ 4 years but guessing he went home during school holidays, so may not have spent enough time in NZ for citizenship?

Four goals and an assist on his debut... sure the league may not be comparable.. but when you haven't played a competative game in 4 years, its not bad.

I don't know a thing about him... does anyone?

Just read the article.

I don't understand why he stuck it out (he was committed to school apparently) - for four years without being able to play a competitive match! That's real commitment right there.

I understand the rule in principle, but I believe it should only apply to professional outfits, not to amateur leagues!

I can't see the likes of Stop Out, Karori etc bringing in kids from underdeveloped countries to bolster their squads!

He's played NYL for the Nix and school football for Scot's and possibly age-group club football too.

Interesting.  I still find it very strange - those are your golden years and I sure as heck would have wanted to play football as much as I physically could at that age. Very bizarre he chose to stay here with the limited opportunities for meaningful game time he had.

Anyway, given the Nix's current situation, that may well play in his hands.  An import slot on minimum A-League salary..is that possible or are there rules preventing this?

Anyway, I am curious to see him in action as he sounds like a livewire.

for this guy his golden years are still to come, obviously had some good advice and concentrated on his schoolwork, which he'll need if he decides to go uni in the states. Although I think he's good enough to be given a pro contract now, he's one of the more exciting players I've seen for a while. I'm alot more excited by him than I was by Sapreet Singh!

There is no age limit on visa signings anymore, afaik there has never been anything stopping them signing for minimum wages either

Well, then the young man is certainly in with a chance.

If he's half as talented as some people say, Nix will look at him and the minimal price tag will only play in his favor.

Inspired by someone asking in the transfer thread where Ben Waine sits among WPFA prospects, given he's off to the Gold Coast with the senior team and in the mix for the FFA Cup,. I’ve whipped this up. Hope at least one person finds it useful. Warning: May not include everyone.

Wellington Phoenix Football Academy (an incomplete list)

1999 (Turning 19 this year - current NZ U-20 cycle)

Sam Philip (DF)

Soon off to college in the US, if he hasn’t left already. Didn’t make the cut for the NZ Oceania U-19 Championship squad. Sat on the A-League bench when All Whites were away in March.

2000 (Turning 18 this year - current NZ U-20 cycle)

Max Batchelor (FW), Calvin Harris (FW - England/Hong Kong), Zac Jones (GK), Liam Moore (DF), Ollie Valentine (DF), Oli Whyte (MF), Jake Williams (DF), Ronan Wynne (DF)

Harris is the top prospect here, but currently injured, which has denied him the chance to take part in Phoenix pre-season. Plenty of eyes will be on him when he’s fit, should he play for WeeNix in the national league. Liam Moore, Oli Whyte and Jake Williams were all WeeNix regulars last summer and should be again. Ronan Wynne, brother of Deklan, joined this winter. Keeper Zac Jones was chosen over Keegan Smith for the Oceania U-19 Championship. Whyte is also a member of that squad, while Moore and Williams were invited to camp in April but only on standby last week.

2001 (Turning 17 this year - current and next NZ U-20 cycle)

Zac Dean (GK), Willem Ebbinge (MF), Kurtis Mogg (MF - England?), Owen Smith (MF), Sam Sutton (MF), Noah Tipene-Clegg (DF), Ben Waine (FW), Josh Wentworth (MF - Australia)

Attacking midfielder Willem Ebbinge is the top prospect here - joined Philip on the A-League bench in March. Ben Waine has travelled to the Gold Coast with the first team ahead of the FFA Cup fixture on August 7. With Ebbinge would off to Tahiti for the Oceania U-19 Championship, Waine is the most experienced Kiwi attacking option in the academy, which probably explains that one, given the defender-heavy look of the senior squad at present. Players in this group began to play for WeeNix last summer and will be core members this coming season.

2002/2003 (Turning 16/15 this year - current NZ U-17 cycle)

Matt Braddock (DF), Blake Driehuis (FW), Henry Hamilton (FW), Adam Hillis (DF), Joseph Lee (FW), Jackson Manuel (MF), Kris Naicker (DF), Finn O’Connor (DF), Ben Old (MF), Alex Paulsen (GK), Oskar van Hattum (FW)

Blake Driehuis, Henry Hamilton, Adam Hillis, Joseph Lee, Jackson Manuel, Finn O’Connor, Ben Old, Alex Paulsen, and Oskar Van Hattum were all invited to July’s NZ U-17 camp in Auckland, with Matt Braddock and Kris Naicker previously attending April’s camp in Wellington. With academy head Paul Temple an assistant in that setup, it would seem a good indicator of who’s standing out - though I'm sure there are more players from these two years in the academy. Manuel became the first 2003-born national league player earlier this year, and expect him to be joined by some 2002-born players this coming season, with forwards Henry Hamilton and Oskar van Hattum likely contenders based on Central League game time.

Bonus: Given I've grouped the academy players by birth year, a look at how players born in the past seven years have fared at the Phoenix - all Kiwis, not just those from the club's academy.

It appeals.

For further reference, some of the 2000/2001-born players who have done notable things but who aren't at the WPFA. A number of these have played NL/NYL for the Phoenix through the Onehunga Sports/WPSS link, funnily enough.

2000

Senior professionals: Liberato Cacace (DF/MF)
Overseas: Leon van den Hoven (MF)
Ole Academy: Alex Clayton (DF), Elijah Just (MF/FW), Josh Rogerson (DF)
NZ U-20s 2018: Jorge Akers (FW), Max Mata (FW), Jordain Spain (DF), Charles Spragg (FW), Leon van den Hoven (MF)
NZ U-17s 2017: Ben Deeley (DF), Oli Duncan (MF), Matthew Jones (DF), Nicholas Milner (GK), Matt Palmer (FW), Kieran Richards (MF), Emlyn Wellsmore (DF)
National league 2017-18: Seth Clark (MF - Canterbury United), JJ Richards (FW - Canterbury United)

2001

NZ U-20s 2018: Matt Conroy (FW), Boyd Curry (DF), Kingsley Sinclair (MF)
NZ U-17s 2017: Jacob Clark (GK)
Other names to watch: Oscar Browne (FW)

Why do some have alternames in brackets?

System allows you to put in your preferred name (ie Oliver > Ollie, Alexander > Alex, Samuel > Sam), but footballers being footballers, that's been taken to mean middle name (in a couple of cases there, I assume) and in some cases, nickname.

The FSE started after he left the club, not sure how he counts as a Nix Academy product tbh.
