i know that lots of  people will disagree with me when i say this but i rekon that the signings that phoenix have made including the two new brazilians have been the best in the a league apart from melbourne of course but its really promising to see a squad of this calibre comin together

No, no, Sydneyphoenuix assures us that Lochhead runs around like a headless chook... apparently we'd be better with Chris Jackson.

I like the signings so far. I wonder if the Phoenix looked into African players at all, I think someone like Dennis Ibrahim would have been good for the Phoenix. He was classy that guy, pace and finishing, two pretty good attributes for a striker. I know signing African players was talked about a while back. Sydneyphoenix some of your comments have been a little strange, Lochead might have had an average game against Wales but hes proved before that match that he is a more than competent left fullback.

Best, Smartest signing so far...Aloisi. Hands down.

In respect to the now, not the future.

Wise words.  Very true.

However, the original reason I came to this board was to herald the arrival of Daniel.  Once you've had a season, in fact, half a season, you'll all be acknowledging that he is hands down the signing of the season.

Yeah, I think Daniel and Aloisi have been the best signings so far. Good to see Coveny in there, too.

I'd love to see our old kiwi chilean favourite Patricio Almendra back, don't know if I could put up with his South American shinanigans again...

Yeah Almendra was class, I wonder where he ended up. He definitely gave a point of difference and some much needed creativity. Hopefully the Brazillian signings can bring something similar to the Phoenix

You all have to admit Victory did recruit pretty well. Looking forward to seeing Hernandez step out in the big V.

thanx for thinkin of me!!! im currently playin for the stop out 3rd team in Cap 8 but would love a callup................

You're right tho, Ibrahim is just the type of striker the nix could use - strong, quick, with a lethal left foot and good in the air as well. If Wynton was on board we could be recruiting guys like that easy!

Is that better?

Actually didn't think it was appropriate for a football forum.

Anyway, thought you would have an Ipswich Town avatar!

Yeah, we don't want to turn the A-league into the NZFC with one team winning everything. Also, I hope Herbert isn't just buying Brazilians because they are Brazilian (like, I heard that Adshead was buying English players because they were English). I'm hoping that Daniel and the other guy whos' name escapes me are actually class.loyalgunner2007-06-14 20:49:38

Yeah but to even suspect that is bloody brainless

I don't think any one can really be sure what was going on in their heads with some of those Knights signings. Most of those signings would have been made on past performances and reputations. The fact that most of the signings in question were English was probably for a reason. I think the coaches probably made the asumption that the A league would be played in the same way the English play the game and therefore looked at the English market mostly for players. Now it seems most teams are starting to look mostly at South America for imports, and really none of the British imports have really had the impact the clubs were expecting them to have.

All the good british players are playing for good british teams and getting paid a lot. Why would they come down here?
Permalink Permalink
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
The point I was making was that they looked at that market because of the Engish style. It has been clearly established that both Adshead and Nevin underestimated the strength of the league and signed some players who ended up struggling in the A League

That was what I heard, but it was probably just someone's opinion. But you no how lots of people in NZ think England are wonderful at football because of England's reputation for being a footballing nation. These people might (wrongly) suspect that any player too come out of England will be class.

I suppose, but they are very wrong and I would bank on them knowing next to nothing about footy. Adshead undestimates the league, Nevin didn't, he just couldnt/didn't recruit correctly.

according to this story http://yellowfever.co.nz/show-news.asp?ID=377 on the front page which was in the Sunday Star Times, the Phoenix are likely to announce two more import signings tomorrow, believed to be a Brazilian central defender and striker (Cleberson and George obviously), however annoucements have been delayed before so I wouldn't hold my breath.
