so the phoenix have 12 players already.
plus 3 imports 15
plus coveny webster christie smith barron brockie
highfield bannatyne gibson and another defender
that would bring the number of nz's to 13 a good number
that would leave us with a pretty good squad.
the only real problem is that some players like christie and
webster wont want to warm the bench

If you presume you are right with the above names does something
not stick out like dogs balls??
Incrediably light on defenders if you ask me.

thats wat i was thinkin at the time so i am hopeful that at least
one of the imports would be a defender and sign tambouras aswell so
in def u would have lochhead smith old o'dor tambouras import
and gibson possibly daniel aswell pedersen2007-05-11 22:27:21

The thing I am keen to see is who the defenders will be as my
instincts are they may take a gamble on 1 foreign spot on a
defender but south america is where they are looking but to be
honest in our price range are they going to be that great.
Most of south american defenders do not do a lot of defending
as they love to get up field and attack and leave gaps at the back
- leaking goals.

I suspect the defenders will be Australians mainly. I really,
really, really hope they don't sign Gibson. he is just awful.

Do you think Ricki should seriously consider Byrnes?

well if we were gonna sign an import defender herbet would be
smart enough to sign one from a country known for its great
defensive skills

Well have you ever seen any print media lately stating anywhere but
South America?

guess not some south americans are naturally good defenders
that dont push forward

Lets hope Ricki has a scout somewhere out there that can tip him off to a talented hard working defender.

Getting back to Chad Gibson I have only seen him play a couple of
times and he did not excite me at all so good luck to the Glory on
that one.

I'd have Byrnes well before Gibson.
Byrnes just had some shocking luck last season, no way in the world he could be that unlucky again.

Ever heard of the saying...All things Come in threes.

But I agree...Byrnes infront of Gibson any day.

byrnes gibson to rejects that arent bad byrnes better than gibson
but gibson can play hes not hopeless

Not Byrnes not Gibson.
Tambouras, Pritchett if need be.

I wouldn't touch Pritchett at all for this level as he does not
even stand out at NZFC in my opinion.

thought he stepped up well enough in Japan - be worth a shot. Also
gives us another option at Right mid

I think he plays with a lot of heart and puts the effort in but is
lacking technically, he was not good enough for the Knights and not
good enough for Phoenix.
I would rather look at Boyens coming back or speaking of
midfielders Barron would be a better option.

He comes highly rated by the tards, so I dont see why not!
To clear the Byrnes release up, why exactly was he released??
If he is highly rated by the Victory why let him go?
yep id sign byrnes definatly - would take charge of the back line
too. not really any defenders that we've signed yet have been "the
loudmouth controller centre defender or sweeper" it will be
integral for this squad, also needs good communication with the
keeper too.

Dare I suggest John Perry? He's kiwi - has experience, looked
pretty good in Japan and has been playing as a right sided cetral
defender as opposed to Right Back - good leader - would boss the
back.

JP usd to play for the Kingz, always gave it heaps but his touch on
the ball wasn't good enough really.
Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Thats right. Stereotyping all South Americans as
attacking defenders ignores the many many talented players based in
big clubs in Europe.
Herbert also mentioned that he had an English guy who was very
keen to come over and he thought he was definitely good
enough. That was about 1-2 weeks ago (I'll see if I can find
the quote) but nothing has been heard of that since. I know
for a fact that the club is looking all over for imports, not just
South America. And the media love the South America
angle!!
Normo's coming home

Yeah i thought that was a shockin call pedersen, i though South
Americans were known for their attacking flair, along with their
fast footwork and skill.

not all of them are some players might prefer to just stay bak and
not be to risky and im talkin about defenders here

so much for new signings going to be released this weekend...

We've got a Brazilian defender - Santos - here in my local K-league
team. Solid sweeper-type, good anticipation, cuts out a lot of
attacks. I'd recommend him for the Phoenix, but he's 35-ish, and
isn't overly quick.
However, we do have a pretty good goal-scoring midfielder, Popo, who's got 6 goals in the first 10 league matches this season. He got 13 in 24 at a different team last year.
Might be worth a look for short-term contract (Oct - Feb) during Korean off season.
