This could be very bad news. This escape clause is only in effect until his contract officially starts am i right? Or is it right throughout his contract?

I would have thought it would be before his contract starts.
Im sure the escape clause is just a loop hole though.
Unless we get confirmation from Tony p. there isnt really much we can do or say for now, other than.

Omg omg omg omg omg omg!

As long as Smeltzy can use the same loophole to go to Turkey I'll live with it.  Like the Diego signing but he's not impossible to replace if he get's a better offer.

Having to watch Smeltzy play us ?  Heartbreaking.

Agreed. I'd much rather have him play in Turkey.

The question is, Do they pay us out for him if he is technically not contracted to us at the moment?

I don't know tbh. Though if Fred really wants to leave there is nothing they can do about it(except offer him copius amounts of money)

el grapadura, further to my earlier response to you, I've noticed that Josip Skoko (an Aussie international) is currently playing for Hajduk Split in the Croatian first division (he's of Cratian descent).  He's just turned 33 and has been playing in Europe and Britain for the last 15 years.  Prior to joining Hajduk this season, he was at Wigan Atheletic and Stoke City.  He could be the sort of player we should be targeting, and being an Aussie it saves us an import spot.  Do you have an knowledge of how he's currently doing?

Skoko would be a major signing!

In my view, we need to find a Fred-type player for the start of the season.  By the time Fred becomes available, if indeed he does become available at all (certainly HN has his doubts), the season will be half over.  If we don't hit the road running at the start of the season, it's going to be a tough season.  Playmaker is a crucial position for us.

He has a contract that the club has the right to renew.  Last season he started 20 games for them, do you think they will choose to release him ?

That would suck big time if Diego went to China......playmakers with good A-league experiance are hard to get hold of. It would really put our recruitment plans for next season on the back foot.

Can't see Fred signing for the phoenix. His NFL club would want a transfer fee...and probably a big one. Might come back as a guest player again. Mind you Terry  did say they would try and get him. He would not have said that if he was not serious. Diego and Fred together in the Phoenix....YES PLEASE!!!!

Come on guys....where's the rumours of our new signings? Beginning of last season there were all sorts of rumours floating around. Some of them turned out to be bang on the money too!!!
Now its as quiet as! Surely someone must have heard something!(sensible please) I mean....does anyone know even whether Dodd has re-signed or resigned?

Tony P said that they are keeping everyone in the dark as to who we are looking at signing this season.

MLS

I agree that Fred will not sign for the Phoenix. He might come over on a guest stint again though, who knows.

I know that Tony P is keeping us all in the dark about who they are attempting to sign...but  we dont even have the excitement of knowing who we might get...damn its frustrating

Hopefully it's 'cause they're after someone big and don't want any competition. Theoretically if Tony P announced we were in talks with Michael Owen then the likes of GCU would be right in there.

And they would magically fit him under the salary cap as well!

I think the reason no-one is spreading any rumours is they read in this thread that people thought that "our" Fred could be going to Spurs, dispaired at the world, and turned off their computers.

Do we get anything for Fred not playing his last 3 games ?

Permalink Permalink

For the record yes we are keeping names quiet who we are chasing. I learnt things after the Joel Porter saga. We have 3 to 4 quality strikers that we are looking at. Signings will happen and will be announced when i get their ink on paper. It does take time and just because there are no announcements does not mean we are sitting on our hands.

In regards to Fred he is a DC United player. His season finishes in October and if we can get him then for good or as a guest player great but we are not holding our breath and need to move forward and sign players who will be here for the start of the season.

Over to you guys.

Thank you for the update Tony.

I think it's fair to say we all understand the need to keep things quiet until deals are done, I think it's also fair to say we are confident you will "do the business" with the new signings.

We will have to satisfy ourselves with speculating in the dark.

Good Luck

I do like the idea of keeping things quiet.
Our public courting of Joel Porter might have been the reason GCU snapped him up so quickly.

As long as we dont pay for Robbie Fowler to take ANOTHER Holiday courtesy of an A-League club!!!

Also, can we please sign Nigel Reo-Coker? Think of all the fun chants we could come up with!!!

PERTH Glory coach Dave Mitchell has told injury-riddled pair Hayden Foxe and Nick Rizzo their contracts with the club will not be renewed.

Foxe, a former Socceroos defender, arrived at the club with a wonderful pedigree having played in the English Premier League as well as several other top competitions around the globe.

An unfortunate run of injuries, including knee, foot and hamstring, restricted Foxe's availability for selection and in two seasons managed just eight of a possible 42 matches for the club.

"It really is an unfortunate circumstance and a very tough decision because when Hayden is out there and playing he is outstanding," said Glory coach Dave Mitchell.

"I felt that part of our problem in the past has been that we have had too many players unavailable throughout the year and that has been costly.

"Hayden is a terrific player, that's the really sad bit about it, we're letting a good player go but the reality is that he has spent limited time on the pitch and I need to have players that are going to be available week in and week out to build some continuity in the squad."

A freakish knee injury on the eve of the 2007/08 season saw Foxe miss the majority of that campaign and after another excellent build-up this season he was struck down before the opening whistle.

"When you look at the clubs that are in the top four, they've had their best players on the park for the majority of the time," added Mitchell. "Hayden is a very influential player and when he isn't there you really miss him.

"I didn't want to make him hang on and hang on in the hope that he might pick something up here - making this decision now gives him an opportunity to look elsewhere and I wish him all the best."

It had been mooted that a pay as you play' style of contract could be an option to retain the 31 year old in Perth.

But Mitchell said that wasn't as simple as it sounds: "Pay as you play might seem like a great idea but in any instance you must account for the possibility of that player playing every match.

"If they played the majority of the games for you it is fine because you're using the money wisely but if they don't play then you have a chunk of money in the cap that is just sitting there doing nothing.

"Sometimes you might need a little bit extra to clinch a deal with a new player and if you have these floating funds not doing anything you'd kick yourself for not fully utilising the resources at your disposal."

Rizzo, 29, will also depart the club after returning to Australia for the 2006/07 season following a long career overseas, including time at Liverpool and Crystal Palace.

In two seasons for the Glory Rizzo played 26 matches, starting 13 times, and gave his all during his time on the pitch.

"Nick came back with a wonderful attitude and desire to make his return to Australia a success but was impacted by injury and always battled against the tide to get to his best," said Mitchell.

"Again, this was a tough decision, Nick is a terrific person and great to have around the change rooms but in the end my decision is based on what we need on the pitch and I felt as though we needed to look in a different direction.

"I'd like to thank Nick for his contribution to the club and wish him and his family all the best in their next move."

Perth Glory coaching staff will continue their review of the current playing squad over the next fortnight while also continuing to make in-roads into the recruitment of new players for Perth next season.

"There is a list of players that we're targeting, while you don't always get all the players you're after there is a good list there and we're going through that process and are confident of bringing some quality players to the club," Mitchell said.

f**k Off!

Foxe is a crock! Can you not read?

Mind you he did get a fine while at West Ham for pissing under a bar at the teams Christmas Party so could be a good laugh!

Rizzo wouldn't fit into our current midfield without losing one of our players.

I like surprises,so keeping things quiet until the deal is done, is good with me.
Although i do enjoy reading all the media speculation about who could be going where and such.

I hope we sign 3 of those quality strikers because 1 or 2 may turn out to be a flop. but I'm glad it will all be under wraps. Its nice being surprised - and hopefully time will be taken recruiting

Thanx Tony P and Good Luck!

I love media speculation but as long as the speculation isn't always coming straight from the actual recruitment process. We don't want anymore Porter Poachers
