What this team needs is a playmaker.Someone who can change a game. Cov has come in for some stick? I don't have a problem with that, but the service that the strikers got was a joke.
When one is at the bottom of the league the first question is--- why is the defence letting in goals?
On Sundays game,Dood did not challenge for a lond ball knocked in. The result was the flick on went to the Perth striker who scored. the goalkeeping was not the best.
The second goal was because Dodd was on the edge of the Perh box and Lochhead was left to do the central defenders job.
The one thing you can say about Dodd is he is not a footballers arse, but at least he give his 100%, which is more than some players.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Exactly. Same with Draper; someone has said "give him a go so that we can criticise him the next week" which may have been tongue in cheek but is a pretty accurate reflection of how things are on here.
Give them a minimum of five games each, then let's analyse their performances.
The players that are copping most of the crap on here - Coveny, Gao etc - are being criticised because they have had plenty of game time and have consistently come up short of what's required.
Things need to change, and without a youth squad or a reserve team the options are limited. Draper and Costa are two of those options, and they must now be given a fair chance. Otherwise, why are they even on the books?

And finally, I agree with Leggy about the lack of a playmaker. This was always going to be a problem due to the recruitment in close season (it's same problem as who to support Smeltz).
If Herbert insists on having two workhorses in the middle, things will always be as they are.
Why not give Daniel (or Gao even) a chance next to Brown in the middle, and put McKain back where he belongs, as a defender? You'd need to tell the lazy bastard (Daniel or Gao) to do some work and go looking for the ball, but still, could it be any worse than what's out there now?
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

Agreed. I didn't see the game but it was his first game in... I don't know, since the Glaxy exhibition match?
He's on the bench again this week for Sydney isn't he... So will have a bit more of an idea then.

My biggest gripe with Coveny is his lack of runs off the ball, at least with Costa you will get some decent decoy run. Coveny is a complete an utter waste of space, he is static, can't hold the ball up, needs about 10 touches to control the ball, is a poor finisher, can't take on opponents with the ball at his feet.
Sure Costa won't single handedly win us games, but at least he will give to opposition defence something some work to do, and might free up space for our attacking players, because at the moment we may aswell be playing with 10 men.

Thing I find interesting is that I was talking to a high profile coach not so long ago who said the squad we have is more or less what he'd have gone for. Makes you think....

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

He's right though Jag.

Apart from a shortage of one frontline striker our 22 players on paper should have been one of the best squads in the league.  Almost all our players have been wanted by other A-League sides at some point, but they have come here and half seem like they are here on Holiday.

It's the same crap that blighted the Knights and if someone doesn't work out how to make them get over egos and petty internal politics we'll end up just as embarassing as they were.

I hear that, HN.

When the squad was being put together there was a real sense of expectation about the players we had and our chances for the season. For whatever reason, a group of players who should be competitive in the league aren't performing. I shall say no more than that...

maybe we need the Zdrillic song for Covs

I saw a Coveny goal and nobody believes me
He was sixteen yards out with nobody in sight...

I would agree that people get five games in which to prove themselves, but it is now too late in the season and we need to perform.

I think McKain should play defensive midfield and Ferrante should be our playmaker.  He played well against Perth and he had an amazing moustache.

i think that's the main reason for all the angst - if we just had crappy players that tried hard but weren't up to it, it'd be alright...alas, no.
I like tautologies because I like them.
