I'm thinking a relatively unchanged side for this one. Probably Bertos for Kwasnik and possibly Moss for Paston, so:
                                     Paston
Sigmund           Durante        Dodd        Lochhead
                        Brown          McKain
Gao                                                     Bertos
                     Coveny        Smeltz

Subs:
Moss
Ferrante
Daniel
Kwasnik

Really need to make sure we win this one and win it well. Not only to get three points but the goal difference is -5 and these games against Perth are the ones where we need to win by a couple. In saying that, I'd take a win anyway it came.

Crucial, must win game really.  Last Perth home game (v Syd) - they were impressive.  Maybe v Perth is THE Phoenix rivalry.  Everytime we play them - it seems like it's MUST win.  Also Harnwell likes to pick on Kiwis.  Negatives: 5,000 of ocean and continent between WLG and PER hardly makes for derby...

Hopefully we really come together and slaughter them ruthlessly (no metaphor intended).

I probably agree with above line-up but would knock Kwasnik off the bench and have Coveny replace him and then give Draper a start.

I like the lineup.

I share LG's view and would drop Kwasnik from the bench - he has been hugely disappointing. I'd like to see Costa or Draper given an opportunity off the bench.

Now we have a more solid and settled back 4 and with McKain and Brown to hold the midfield  I'd like to see Leo and Lei Lei given the message to really push forward and have a go. They both showed last weekend they have the confidence, speed and skill to take on and beat players.

I'd really like to see us take it to Perth -  I don't think our front 4 are really suited to conservative slow build-up.

Let the flair players play their natural game - run hard and straight at the defense - take men on, quick one touches.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Amen.

It's all about confidence - the back 4 are developing it - the front 4 need it.

Let them have a crack - if it breaks down so be it - if you miss so what.

Lei Lei, Leo, Smeltz and Coveny have the ability to make things happen but none of them seem to have the confidence to take responsibility. Take the shakles off, stop the endless build-up and trying to walk the ball in to the net.

They are all good enough - encourage them to just back themselves and have a go.

It's going to be a very tough game. Perth are a different team with Amaral. Also, they have finally woken up to the fact that Topor Stanley isn't a right back's asshole and Harnwell, while not a natural striker, still scores more than most strikers in the league.

We can win, obviously, but our transition play needs to improve about 1000% - though it wont be as hard as it was against QLD because Perth's midfield isn't comparable.

                           Paston

                  Dura           Dodd
Sigmund                                     Lochhead

    Bertos                                 Gao

                Coveny   Smeltz

Moss
Ferrante
Daniel
Draper

Paston has earnt the #1 slot in my view, and the back fourspeaks for itself, as do our CMs. Gao to the left, Bertos must start on the other side, cut the Kwasnik crap. Coveny was brilliant last game but his subtitution shouldn't be left to late. Smeltz goes without saying.

I think that we will hopefully see Oska's team this week but in an ideal world I'd like to see...

                          Paston
Siggy        Dura             Dodd       Lochy
              Mckain        Brown
Bertos                 Gao                   Daniel
                     Smeltz

This would require Gao to really get involved right from the start though.

I agree with this completely (except maybe Moss for Paston, and possibly switching Gao and Daniel around). We looked really good against Queensland when Coveny was taken off for Daniel, reminded me a lot of how well the team played in the Pre-Season Cup. And even with Smeltzy isolated up front we still scored 5 goals in 3 games.

Like the look of this line up. There needs to be urgency from the start. They only come to life once they are a goal down - always playing catch up. How many games have we scored first?

I definately believe it's time to drop Coveny

I reckon you'd be right there, he's done his dash up front, hasn't really proved that effective. Do we really want to go back to one up front though?? perhaps we could stick with the 4 - 4 - 2 but have someone else along side Smeltz
                     Paston
Siggy        Dura             Dodd       Lochy
               Mckain        Brown
is pretty much set in stone at the moment - Mossy could do just as well.

Coveny has to start, as does Bertos
No way Kwasnik should even travel there, waste of a plane ticket.
And the problem before with Paston was confidence/lack of game time and it's back! Good on him. He'll stay in there until he makes a monumental cock-up, which seems unlikely at the moment. Nice to have two good 'keepers

I would like to see the Holy Trinity play behind Smeltz, probably Gao in the middle. However I think we will see Covs start with Bertos in for Kwasnik

Against the gLOLry is the time to give one of the youth's a run, if we don't see them against gLOLry we won't see them at all.

Is there a particular reason that the Nix are the only team too scared to give the youths a run?

Cos we don't have a youth team? :P

I don't think we should ban Bertos from shooting, sure he missed terribly last game but he's shown to be one of our players that's not afraid to actually take a shot instead of just passing around their goalbox.

Shoot enough and you'll start to score.

that could be said to any of the boys up front, they all need to shoot instead of passing the ball out of the box!

The anti-Nix brigade are out with the negative comments again.

Covs will start - that's bleeding obvious because of the last game. I agree he should have come off maybe 10 mins earlier to give Daniel more impact, but he'll start.
He's also playing because, as done to death elsewhere on here, the alternatives are a heap worse.

COSTA BARBAROUSES hasn't worn a Wellington Phoenix jersey in a Hyundai
A-League match since January, so the youngster is understandably buzzing
after making the squad for the Phoenix's road trip to Perth and Sydney.

Oh Wellinton is Wonderful........
And so is Ricki.....for picking Costa.......

Great news. We can't afford to go to Perth and knock it around for an hour and hope to nick a late goal. We have to attack them right from the kick off...and we have got the right squad to do it.
Our back four and DM's will hold out Perth which gives the front guys a chance to go for it. Would really like to see Daniel, Gao and Bertos in there early and bring Costa on with 30 to go when one of the others is shagged.
Can't wait for this game now. This give us a chance to leave Perth on the bottom of the ladder. It won't be an easy game as we are 5 or 6 hours out of our time zone...but what the hell, score some goals!!!!!

Draper too?

As has been pointed out Costa at the moment fairly enough is the type of player who would be waiting behind Bertos, Daniel and Gao for some game time. It would be good to see Draper on for Covs.

Heh. We should ask for an extra sub spot for a youth player because we don't have a youth team. Seems fair enough to me!

edit: passing thought. Has anyone seen the squad? i was just thinking (and every time I think the spaces on the bench get larger and larger...) All our best defenders are out on the field. Would it be worth putting Manny Muscat on the bench to A) give them a spell wether in the midfield or defence B) just because Sigmund hasn't let a soul past him, still look at the alternative possiblity with attacking from the back too?

far fetched I know, but I do remember him having a good performance in our win against Sydney, and I think that has been our best attacking game this season?

Ferrante is a better option I think, because if a defender needs to be substituted we have McKain to drop back and Ferrante can come in alongside Brown.

Everyone's prayers have been answered, one of our youngsters is going to get a go.

Good luck Costa, let's hope you get plenty of chances, and convert one or two of them!

In the squad for Kwasnik, nice decision so I assume that Super Leo will start and Costa will come on as a sub for either Coveny or one of the midfielders mid-late second half.

Great stuff and we really do need to get Greg and Costa out there in the thick of it now, cos when Smeltz disappears we'll need some strikers to step up and why not let these two have a go at it.  Youth players have done really well in other teams so there's no reason why they won't here as well.
